Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

Fun Course, Poor Service
The course was very pretty and in good shape. The layout was a lot of fun. The greens rolled VERY slow at the start of the round, but picked up speed later on. The starter was all over the place, so we got off a little late.
We were told there would be drink carts on the course, one on each nine, but there were none and it was hot! That made it pretty uncomfortable.
There was a lot of water on the course for being in the middle of the desert. Fairways are in great shape. Facilities are nice.
Course was in great shape, good pace of play and very friendly staff. Great value !
Many rounds played here.... always the best.
Hey I suck, but I always have a good time here at whirlwind. Today was car tail, the more difficult of the 2 in my opinion. 44 front 47 back. Eh, I'll take it. Greens were true of not a little slow for this time of year. Fairways, rough, tee boxes all in great shape. If you've never been here, plenty of undulations on the course, but mostly flat. Great landscape, but a little tough to find errant balls. AND!!..... it's rattlesnake season so don't go looking out there anyway. Lol
Cattail course 05182021
Course is in great early summer condition. Course is being maintained beautifully. Greens are fast and true, soft and fast. Loved the bag guys and cart guys! I have been playing this course since opening day way back in the late 90’s. Beautiful layout and a challenging but fun track.
First week of May 2021
Staff is good. Course was okay. I was bummed that the bunkers were inconsistent. Some holes the bunkers looked okay, but were hard less than 1/2” below the surface. Some holes were muddy and unplayable. Yes, I should avoid the bunkers. And I should have some penalty for playing out of them. Just make sure they are consistent Which it was not for the price of the round.
Resort course and not that memorable
All of the holes are straight forward driver then hybrid or iron. Close to no elevation to speak of and as resort courses go not very memorable. Not worth the high fees. Amenities just ok no bottled water but a good restaurant for pre and after game drinks and food.
Course conditions will be tough to beat for the money.
Course was in fantastic condition. Practice area is the best. Prefer the Cattail over the Devil Claw.
AN ABOSOLUTE MUST!!!!
Being January, the rough were dormant but still very playable. Fairways were over seeded so very plush green and still ran great. Greens were very receptive and ran fast and true. Bunkers are shallow so a bit tricky to play out of. The layout is amazing!!! It's challenging but still fun!! Definitely plan on playing here the next time I am in town!!!
