Whirlwind Golf Club - The Devil's Claw Course
About
Devil's Claw is one of two golf courses at Whirlwind G.C., part of the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler. In addition to its views of four mountain ranges -- South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains, the San Tan Mountains and the Superstitions -- Devil's Claw overflows with Native American culture.
A round on the Devil's Claw at Whirlwind Golf Club begins on Greasy Mountain, a par-4 424-yarder that faces Muh-wah Ha-dahk - the Gila River Indian Community's name for South Mountain. Things get long on the fifth, Maricopa Journey, a par-5 593-yarder designed to memorialize the travels of the Pee-Posh (or Maricopa tribe) from the Colorado River to where the Gila and Salt rivers meet. Go home via Going Home, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 442 yards from the Black tees. As the Gila River Indian Community sings it, "Our songs are ending as you go your separate ways, take along with you the good songs that were sung here today, as within your hearts."
Don't go straight home: You can still fit in another song after golfing the Devil's Claw golf course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in the clubhouse, which features a fully stocked bar and plenty of plasma televisions for relaxing and catching up on other sports.

Par 3, #7 - Beautiful! Photo submitted by u000002627226 on 06/02/2020
Very well maintained, excellent variety of holes.
My playing partner and I enjoyed the layout, finding it challenging, but not a grind. I spent more time in the desert than I would have liked, but that certainly was not the fault of the course, just my swing.
Great course, tons of fun!
Played the devil and it was awesome! Only complaint was pace of play. The marshal just acted as if it was normal instead of speeding things up.
Excellent layout with good challenges
A must play if visiting Phoenix area in the near future
Great course, bad odor
I loved the course. Greens are fantastic. Fairway are lush. The only issue is the odor of the lake water. I don't know if the machinery that maintains them was not working properly, but there was a very strong urine smell.
Great Course
This is a great course, lush fairways and nice fair greens. I'm coming back!
Could be a great course but the sand traps are horrible!!!!
I have played this course many times over the years, however it has never been in worst shape. The sand traps are in very bad shape. My friends and I have complained but nothing is done. You would think between Troon and Gila River they could fix this. What a waste!!
Good Course Good Play
Was a fun course, well maintained. Fair challenge. Fun. Good pace of play.
Course was in excellent condition as always.
Our group appreciated excellent customer service! Rate for our round was errantly posted in our favor. We checked in and staff honored the rate we booked without question!
Resort style course, in Troon condition. Grab it on hot deals everytime.
Our favorite place to play in South PHX. Whirlwind -Cattail is the easier of the two courses but very enjoyable. Desert style, but not "target" golf. Fast greens, in typical great "Troon" shape. Relatively flat course. Lots of sand, enough water and trees to make it a good test. Great practice area includes range, bunker/chipping and putting areas. Friendly staff through the pro-shop, beverage cart , starter and restaurant bar . This is a higher end Troon course so can be pricey, but if its on "hot deals" grab it!!!
Consistently a good choice.
Facilities are always superb for the practice before the round. Course is in excellent shape.
Fairways were like a high quality carpet
Have fun and stay away from the bunkers that can come in to play on every hole. Greens were in excellent condition.
Beautiful Golf Course
Excellent condition, outstanding practice facilities, great greens, a pleasure to play. Make sure you consult the "players book" they give you to make yourself aware of where the water and other hazards come into play. The staff was great and the food in the restaurant is delicious.
Best course I played on my trip
Played Devils claw, it is a great course, little nicer then Cattail but I like that one fine too. Pace was perfect, I enjoyed every part of playing here and would return in a heartbeat.
Challanging without being unfair.
Whirlwind - Devils claw is a challanging desert course that plays fair. Fairways are wide and most fairways are flat / comfortable. Sand traps are challanging to get out of. Greens are in great shape and roll true. Green Breaks are challanging to read and putted balls don't jump, bounce, etc.
From Par 3 to Par 5's the course is designed and maintained to be challanging and fun.
Very good maintainence
My wife and I played Devils Claw on Thanksgiving afternoon. We finished in 3.5 hrs and enjoyed the course. It was challenging for us (bogey golfers) and the greens were fast. Our only negative comment was that most of the holes looked the same, from a visual perspective. We would return though to play because of the great condition of fairways and greens and the very friendly staff.
Nice design, well groomed course.
This course is built in the desert flats, but has plenty of terrain designed into it. Perfectly groomed. A good course for all levels of expertise.
variety
the course has some nice variety and some challenging greens. some of the pin placements can be very tricky.
overall a very nice course with not alot of water hazards.
This course is chalenging but fair.
Played the course 5 days after it had re-opened from over seeding.
The course was in fantastic shape, very good conditions.
An excellently maintained course.
I liked the tees in particular - It was a fairly long course and I'm a short hitter. The availabilty of 4 tee levels for every hole, all separately maintained and equally high quality was most gratifying. I also was impressed (though sometimes depressed) by the sand traps, which are quite challenging, while also being well maintained.
You never seem to get a bad Troon golf course
Course was in pristine condition, the greens a little slow if you were being pedantic, but as over seeding had just finished you could accept this.
