Whirlwind Golf Club - The Devil's Claw Course
About
Devil's Claw is one of two golf courses at Whirlwind G.C., part of the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler. In addition to its views of four mountain ranges -- South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains, the San Tan Mountains and the Superstitions -- Devil's Claw overflows with Native American culture.
A round on the Devil's Claw at Whirlwind Golf Club begins on Greasy Mountain, a par-4 424-yarder that faces Muh-wah Ha-dahk - the Gila River Indian Community's name for South Mountain. Things get long on the fifth, Maricopa Journey, a par-5 593-yarder designed to memorialize the travels of the Pee-Posh (or Maricopa tribe) from the Colorado River to where the Gila and Salt rivers meet. Go home via Going Home, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 442 yards from the Black tees. As the Gila River Indian Community sings it, "Our songs are ending as you go your separate ways, take along with you the good songs that were sung here today, as within your hearts."
Don't go straight home: You can still fit in another song after golfing the Devil's Claw golf course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in the clubhouse, which features a fully stocked bar and plenty of plasma televisions for relaxing and catching up on other sports.

Par 3, #7 - Beautiful! Photo submitted by u000002627226 on 06/02/2020
Good course - lots of bunkers and good greens
Played Devil's Claw. Nice course in the desert but the holes all seem to come out looking the same. Course is well maintained with challenging greens. While it appears generous off the tee blocks, you have to pay attention to the strategic bunkering. I was surprised they have no GPS here - I'd recommend bringing one as many of the holes require something short of a driver off the tee to avoid the bunkers. Good practice facilities available.
Good condition
$85 plus dollars, no GPS, no half way house, wanted lunch as we played later but no choices for a vegetarian, turkey and ham only. For a Troon facility, I expected it to be a bit better. Regardless, a good course and the clubhouse staff who served us was very good. There are better choices for greater value, won't be on rotation next year. All in the value
Devil's Claw is a great course!
After arriving from the Great White North,
Whirlwinds Devil's Claw was a perfect fit.
Excellent practice facility. Go play it!
Great condition, greens are superb
Very much enjoyed the round and will be back. The playful prairie dog was a bonus.
Great conditions
Both courses at whirlwind are fun, fair golf courses with as nice of conditions as any courses in the area. Fair for all levels of the game. The desert areas are playable and balls are not easily lost. Greens were in perfect shape. Highly recommended.
A nice course I will play again
I played the Cat Tail course today and the course was in great condition.
I played with some early birds 6:45am , to early for me and maybe to early for most the staff as we didn't see the cart girl until hole 8.
The fairways and greens were in great condition. Not a much scenery near bye but the course itself looked great.
Although I would say this course is slightly over priced compared to some other courses Ive played that are more beautiful. One thing I really liked was unlimited practice balls on the range. I wish I had gotten there earlier to enjoy them. (next time)This was my first time playing here and I will be playing here more often since it's close to home. My friends who play Whirlwind regularly tell me the Devils Claw course is easier. Go Play!
Course was in great condition.
Friendly staff, helpful. Course is well maintained and pace of play was great. Can't wait to play it again.
Nice layout - well maintained - nice verandah for post game drinks.
Very green - well maintained - no bad lies in the fairway - wide open fairways - all trouble is the blame of the player - good greens - good value if you watch golfnow for deals. Carts are a little dated and no gps but a small complaint. I like the Devil's Claw a little better than the Cattail but either makes for a great day.
Great desert style course.
The course was in immaculate condition - like carpet everywhere. Never a bad lie. Great desert look and feel but plenty of room to hit the ball with generous fairways. Lots of fairway traps. I found several of them. Greens ran fast but not scary which is good because they have quite a bit of undulation. The staff was friendly and helpful. Had a great time and will be back to play next time I'm in Phoenix.
Good course, but there are much better for the price.
A friend had recommended this course and I was looking forward to playing it on my last day in Phoenix. The course was in excellent condition and provided a decent challenge for the average golfer but it was not so difficult that it would be frustrating for a novice. I was relatively unimpressed with the surrounding scenery and location of the course. It is flat and feels as though the course was built in an industrial park due to the proximity to several large buildings, and for a portion of the course all you can see on the horizon is street lamps from the large parking lots around it. The pace was a little slow and the group behind us kept complaining that we were holding them up, when in fact we were waiting behind those in front of us. I wouldn't recommend this course based simply on the fact that their are a lot better and more scenic courses in the area for the same if not less money.
Great course. Challenging and fun.
We played this course during the afternoon. Beautiful course, great shape and pace of play was under 4 hours. Greens were terrific, even for late in the day. Overall , the experience was great! Beware, it can get windy in the afternoon. The last 4 holes are fun, but played straight into the wind. My only complaint is that my junior golfer didn't get very much of a discount off the afternoon rate. Paying almost full rate for a junior at 2:00pm or playing after 3:00 and having the junior play for free isn't a great deal when you are on Spring Break and can't finish before dark if you tee off at 3:00. That being said, we loved the course and would play it again!
Course well maintained.
Course in great condition, not pristine, but well maintained and greens could be a little faster, but okay for resort course.
Pace of play was good.
Great Course
Played Devils Claw, the course is in great shape, the practice facilities are also very good. I will play this again on my next trip. The Sky Harbor airport is short 15 min drive straight up I-10.
Very playable but challenging
Course in great condition very challenging but fair. Loved the greens, fast and true
Troon Quality Course that is one of the best in the area.
Great condition, good challenge, even better if you can wait to book your round close to the date you want to play - great discount! Close to airport for travelers wanting to get a round in before they leave or right away when they arrive. Can't wait to play here again.
The course offers several great features
In my view you won't find a more challenging and beautiful course for your money. The friendly atmosphere and staff go over and above to make sure that you have a great day of golf.
LUSH FAIRWAYS AND TRUE GREENS
Played the Devils Claw course and greatly enjoyed the experience.I liked the layout, the length from the gold tees, and the water on two of the par threes. The staff was friendly and the practice facility is super.Would definitely play again if I could get another good rate on GolfNow.
Very nice course with sculptured greens.
Most fairways had generous landing areas. I felt greens could be very difficult as they were multi tiered. Couple of split fairways / doglegs were difficult as I had no previous knowledge of the course. (holes 9 and 16) overall I would come back and play again.
First Class Facility
From the time we got to bag drop to last dropped putt, first class. Friendly helpful staff, good well stocked practice facility and a very nice layout. Variety of holes with varying length par 3's which is nice for a change from the tips (7,000 yds) with some water. I especially enjoyed the 9th hole with the split fairway. Would play this course again and again!
First Class Facility
From the time you step out of the vehicle at the bag drop to the end of the round, first class facility. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the practice facility were good and well stocked and the course (Devil's Claw) fit the 4.5 stars on golfnow. Variety of holes with uniqueness and views. I especially liked the 9th hole with the split fairway giving you a choice to cut a few yards off. Plays just over 7,000 yds. from tips and is a challenge from there but not undaunting.
