About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

How can tee times be running 15 minutes late at 9 am?
I like Lonnie Poole and play there a couple times a month. It used to be that rounds were 4 hours or less, but not for the last year or so. Yesterday was even worse, at 9 am, the tee times were already running 15 minutes behind. The round then took 4:30 minutes. Not sure what's happened out there. It seems like they are letting the morning regulars back everything up.

Harder, faster, Sometimes Unfair.
Seemed harder than before- no rough so fairways much more unfair- for example, hit a great shot to the left side of the fairway and ball ended up past the cart path into the woods on the right. This happened more than once.
We've played this course a number of times and enjoy it (in spite of # 2, 8, 9, 11, and 18!). A bit unfair and we can see the impact of weather in winter.
The type of grass on our course is similar to Lonnie Poole and we have lots of brown spots, etc.
Really unforgiving this time but we will played again!

Best public course
Fairways were challenging and well kept, layout is very challenging as well. Greens were great, though a bit sandy.

Greens still healing

Amazing facility!
This is the nicest facility in our area with an amazing view of the city. Unfortunately the pace of play was unrealistic. Our Tee Time was at 1pm and our round was completed before 5pm. On 5 different holes, Course Rangers visited us to tell us to pick up the pace of play. I found myself jogging to hit my ball with no time to setup or use my GPS because of the rude rangers haggling us to move it along. Unfortunate, because the starter was a very friendly person with plenty of info and a smile.
