Play it now before it’s gone forever!
Cold & wet for our round at South Moor but we still enjoyed it all the same. The course is standing up very well to the winter conditions with greens in particularly good order for the time of year. The course is somewhat challenging with most holes including some significant changes in elevation across sloping fairways and tight approaches to relatively small greens – visitors that aren’t familiar with the course can expect to lose a few balls with hole 16 being especially tricky. It’s a real shame that the club house and part of the course is due to go under the bulldozer shortly to make way for new housing – book it and play it now before it’s gone forever. Only negative for our round [apart from the weather] was slow play by a couple of 4 balls in front of us that took forever to finish putting and get off each green – our party and two other parties behind us were stood waiting for a long while on several holes.
Lovely course
Always a challenging course but you need to play it a couple of times to score well, as positioning off the tee is very important. Greens a little bobbly this late in the season as the conditions were damp and even a repaired pitch mark can affect your roll. Nice to see they’ve abandoned the previously mandatory fairway mats this winter.
Course isn’t long but has a few really interesting holes where the risk / reward balance is just right. you’ll find yourself doubting your gps / rangefinder once or twice as the architect plays with your perception of distance.
Good course
Was expecting a good course heard good things before hand and it duly delivered got there bang on time so didn't hve time to warm up or anything had an awful round score wise but tht was dwn 2 me not the course for the time ov the year course was in gd condition winter mats were dwn but fairways and greens were in really good condition will be back at some point
Excellent
Excellent course. Have played this many times and always tough and hilly but very enjoyable and good condition. Having been wet some fairways were a little boggy today but didn’t spoil anything. Quiet today. Clubhouse staff very friendly
South Moor GC
Great day of play. Hit it lucky with the weather, torrential rains ended an hour before tee off but the course was still in perfect condition due to excellent drainage. Greens well maintained and glorious county wide views from the higher tee boxes.

Paid £15 on a Monday great value.Pro shop friendly and helpful before and after game .Course in VGC and the layout is superb, one of best courses in North East.Greens were very quick for September,7 putts first 2 holes!!!...Played very well 39 points,I hadn't been here for over 3 years and I almost forgot how good the course is.My partner played it for first time and loved it,he played reasonably well.
Highly recommended and £15 is a steal on Mondays and Tuesdays at moment

Magnificent course
One of the very best courses in the North East of England in absolutely magnificent condition. It is quite tragic that this Alastair McKenzie course is so little known and so unheralded. If it was situated in a more affluent location it would command top-end green fees. It is a truly classic moorland McKenzie masterpiece!
Great Greens
It rained from start to finish when we played our round, but that didn’t dampen our spirits. Even soaking wet, the greens ran true and fast, a delight to putt on. Unfortunately, the tee boxes especially and some of the fairways let the course down slightly, they just required a bit more attention and some tee boxes were of semi rough length. Enjoyed the course all the same, however would recommend eating elsewhere as we paid well over the odds for a bacon sandwich as we hadn’t ate beforehand!
Siouth Moor
Great course in good condition interesting and challenging. Greens were excellent.
Challenging and enjoyable course
Hadn’t played the course for over 6 years so forgotten all the holes. It’s a great layout, every hole offers a different challenge. The greens were the best I’ve seen this year, réceptive but running very true, if you manage to pick the lines.
Overall great value and excellent course. Very friendly and helpful pro shop with great range of new and second hand clubs and equipment.
Top course
I hadn’t played South Moor for a number of years.
Received a warm welcome in the pro shop.
The course has an excellent variety of challenging holes with many offering elevated tees. Greens were fantastic and overall course condition first class.
Super value for money. Will definitely not leave it as long to play again.
