Whickham Golf Club - Crombie Course

Really enjoyed this course. Tee boxes and greens were immaculate. Areas surrounding the green need a little bit of work, but the course was playing great and the fairways were sound as well.

Course was in fairly good condition for our round with the exception of some hard compacted sand in some bunkers and issues with temp hole plugs standing proud on some of the greens. We teed off nearly 20 minutes after a members competition but had pretty much caught up with them by the 5th hole - subsequent pace of play was a bit slow and players were starting to get significantly backed up from the 9th hole onwards. We have played Whickham quite a few times over the years - it's usually fairly good over the June to August period but suffers with heavy leaf fall during late summer / autumn and muds up very quickly to the extent that some holes or even the entire course is often shut - it's worth checking course status / weather forecast if you are traveling a significant distance.

My tee of time was 06:08 and it was a perfect time. Loved it great course.

Played this course several times and usually enjoy it. Greens were in excellent condition - quick and ball rolling smoothly. However, avoid Tues/ Thurs mornings as they have Seniors Comps. Pace of play is soporific.

I teed off over an hour behind them and caught up with the last group on 7th. Was clearly told that despite them being over a hole and a half behind the group in front, I would not be played through. Chose to play 8&9 then returned to clubhouse.

Paid for 18 holes but only played 9 as a result. Shame as I was enjoying the course up to the 7th!

Played slaley last weekend green conditions at whickam much better & half the price . Lovely course played few times so far, will be playing few more as well

Lovely course and in great condition given the dry weather.

Some steep hills and blind holes make it a good challenge, would recommend having a trolley.

Club house was really nice, with friendly staff, pace of play could have been quicker, but it was a busy Sunday afternoon and not really slow. Would definitely give it try again.

A nice parkland course. Quite hilly mind, but fun to play.

I’ve played here over 10 times probably and the course is normally in good condition from Spring and through Sunmer. It was poor this time round. Still on winter mats what I can live with, but the greens were terrible with tracks and sand all over them, the fairways look like they hadn’t been cut and the course maintenance in general was poor. I did email the club and they just emailed back saying it is what it is.

I’d recommend not playing here for another few months, till the course conditions improve.

My first time at Whickham. Won't be my last.

Obviously, still winter conditions and the greens had been treated but I will come back to see it in all it's glory this summer.

Some excellent holes, some quirky holes, some long holes and it's a really good test.

It's hilly and undulating and was blowing a gale, but some of the views were spectacular. It's brilliant value for money, and the bar and pro shop are both excellent

Had a lovely shandy afterwards in the bar, and all 4 of us really enjoyed it.

Beautiful course… Very hilly. Can see it getting quite muddy. We were lucky the ground was firm. We even saw a hare. Sun was out and felt like spring.

Played yesterday for the first time this year. Course has held up magnificently after a rough winter. Greens were all open bar 2-3 winter greens. Wonderful place. Great staff & people!

lovely in the summer but was like a swamp yesterday and wasn't enjoyable...pace of play was horrendous...4.5 hours in cold weather not good...never come of a round as muddy. should be closed when its that wet and the sections that are roped off to protect the course result in the areas you walk being dangerously slippy. would play in the summer but will avoid in the winter.

Whickham is an attractive course tucked into the hilly Gibside woodland, and it is the contours and the trees that place it as one of the best and most challenging parkland courses on Tyneside and, arguably, the North-east.

Great course in the North East. Every tee is different, prompting course management. It’s not always a driver on every par 4, which keeps it from getting repetitive. Onsite stocked pro-shop, bar and restaurant, chipping green with bunker and putting green which both reflect the green speeds on-course (which are rapid in summer and fast in winter). Driving net literally on the 1st teebox which is great to get warmed up and then immediately tee off. I played in summer and winter, this review was written when winter tees came in. Winter tee mats are clean and spongey. Not thick with mud like most places. 9.5/10 from me.

Course was in very good condition, apart from a couple of tee boxes that were a bit worse for wear. Greens were rolling true.

My only criticism was pace of play. This was due to a members 4bb comp taking place. Although they had over an hours start on me, still caught up with the final group by 7th hole. One of the group did say on 10th “sorry but can’t let you play through as we are in a comp” - but that is no excuse for such slow play.
