Grand Canyon University Golf Course
About
Grand Canyon University Golf Course (formerly known as Maryvale Municipal Golf Course) offers an 18-hole track designed by Ted Robinson, Sr. and built in 1961. The par-71 golf course measures 7,269 yards from the championship tees and is open year-round.
The Bermuda grass Grand Canyon University Golf Course gets plenty of shade during the summer, thanks to several onsite trees, and features flat and wide fairways.
The fourth hole, for one example, is a 160-yard par-3 where you'll have to shoot over the water - and past the brick wall that separates the green from the water.

DeadPan
I've played this course several times. At the moment, I would NOT recommend playing here.
The entire course is deadpan, even the fairways. Your reward for a perfect drive? Your ball resting on compact mud with a veneer-thin layer of grass on top. It's almost like hitting off a green.
One of the guys in my foursome used his putter for approach shots less than 30 yards, which should not have been possible.
Very disappointing for the price.
Challenging
I played this course last year and told people it was challenging but I had forgotten just how. I quickly remembered on the first hole. Almost every Green is elevated more like table top with bunkers around most of it. The greens were exceptionally fast but in good shape. I guess you have to be pretty accurate if you want to make par. Even with a good drive the second shot in On a par four was critical to be on the green but difficult unless you are very accurate and the bunkers were pretty much like concrete. Then there were the Fairway bunkers we spent quite a bit of time in those as well as they were laid out perfectly if you played the correct Tee Box for your ability. Anyway it's reasonably priced and worth playing at least once but prepared to be a little frustrated unless you're a low handicapper. I usually shoot mid-80s but I quit keeping score after whole five yesterday.
Poor management
Tee off 2:04pm. Starter said to begin on back nine. 4 groups jumped right in front of us on the 1st hole while playing the par 5 18th! Really stinks that they would do that. Had to quit at 9 after paying for 18 because the wait was ridiculous. Told the young woman in the pro shop, but she was clueless, and the started was no where to be found.
Course was a 4/10 in my book as for condition, and layout, but I’m used to country club conditions in a much greener area of the country. Price was fair for 18, but I should get a free round for what happened.
Great course!
Beautiful layout, challenging greens and well taken care of course. Good pace and friendly staff.
Late Start. Bad pace of play
Tee times were 20 minutes late. No communication from staff ahead of time that there was a large delay. Rangers didn't appear to be doing anything while on the course. Front 9 took 2.5 hours. Course conditions were mediocre, especially for this time of the year.
Absolutely slowest pace of play I’ve ever experienced
Perfect day. No frost delay, nothing. Inexplicably 15-20 minutes behind on 1. That was the only hole I played. Took 45 minute.
They begrudgingly gave me a refund and I left. If you have seven hours to spare, by all means, go waste your time.
LOVE THIS COURSE!!
Finally got to play this course!! Great condition, challenging greens and good pace. I will def be back again soon!!
Only if you LOVE sandtraps
The course is surrounded by very loud roads and lots of traffic noise. The layout is fine but oh my the sandtraps! They are deep and surround most every green and line fairways. The sand is pretty solid so getting out can be a challenge with how deep they are. Tough to make a nice landing on the green. Greens on the back were a little rough and didn't roll nicely. I would not choose to play this again for the price. Plays like a muni course.
Decent track...
Fairways & greens are in decent shape. All the greens are all elevated, which makes them very challenging. Also besides the elevated greens they do not have any grass around the greens. So, if you don't land in the middle of the green, your ball can easily roll off the back or the sides.
Way too many bunkers for my liking. Besides bunkers around the greens, pretty well every fairway has a bunker or 2.
Lots of sand
You better plan on target golf. Or bring your beach towel
A few issues
1. Staff was excellent
2. Course average condition - likely affected by current long dry spell.
3. Bunkers are overkill especially for our higher handicap partners.
4. Four kids (maybe 20 yrs old) jumped in at #10 and really slowed play. We were already pushed a bit for time to finish and their incursion (that shouldn’t have happened) made it impossible.
Nice, but?
So the course is a nice layout. First the pace gets slow on a couple of par 3's. The bunkers need work. The sand was poor and full of pebble size rocks. It would also be nice if they had some golf ball washers at the tee boxes too. The amenities were nice. Their food was ok, but not great. However, the restaurant and bar are nice too. As for the value, with the local card deal it's OK, but for 100 plus dollars they need to address what I mentioned. If they do sink a little money into the course, it would go from average to excellent.
