Grand Canyon University Golf Course
About
Grand Canyon University Golf Course (formerly known as Maryvale Municipal Golf Course) offers an 18-hole track designed by Ted Robinson, Sr. and built in 1961. The par-71 golf course measures 7,269 yards from the championship tees and is open year-round.
The Bermuda grass Grand Canyon University Golf Course gets plenty of shade during the summer, thanks to several onsite trees, and features flat and wide fairways.
The fourth hole, for one example, is a 160-yard par-3 where you'll have to shoot over the water - and past the brick wall that separates the green from the water.

Overpriced and overbooked
I have a city of Phoenix card but no tee times were available 9 days out so had to use the normal booking site. The rate online was $140 per player. Almost triple the normal rate due to the WM golf tournament being the same weekend. When I arrived I was charged $161 and had to ask for a refund of the difference from $140. It took 5 hours to finish golf. At one point we had four groups backed up on hole 8. Overall not a good experience especially since I was hosting a friend from out of town.
Too many bunkers!
The course has an inordinate amount of bunkers…plays like a “practice” course. The greens are hard, very fast, and do not hold shots.
Not the best shape for the money
Have played here few times, and this is the worst I’ve seen it. Greens are in good shape, with good rolling speed, but sand traps are hard soil, and fairways have been painted or something that does not allow wedges to be play smoothly. I believe that for the course condition, course is overpriced
Greens were really nice. We were done in four hours.
But the whole course is like one big green. Tight lies everywhere of course this time of the year because the grass is not growing. They get a lot of play here. Nice shop and nice restaurant and nice employees.
A game of halves
Initially, I really HATED this place. Mostly because I started off the bat with a double bogey, shortly followed by a triple bogey going from bunker to bunker. The front 9 was terrible. (it was actually lovely I just shot a 48)
The BACK 9, however, was wonderful. (I shot 40 on the back - if that gives you any clues to how terrible and inconsistent I am)
Overall I would 100% play here again. Great bang for the buck. Hopefully I warm up properly next time and shoot a respectable score on the front to make this great place even better.
Great value
Great value- course is in good shape. Lots of sand traps so very challenging . Staff was super helpful and friendly and the breakfast was great. A real bargain considering what other courses cost this time of year.
If you like the sand
Sand traps are in play on most holes. Surprised they are not better maintained for a college course. 1/2 in of sand on hard packed dirt.
Course is in terrible shape. If u like playing off concrete grass this is the place for you. I will never play that course again.
A strange experience with marshall
We booked 6 to play, a foursome following a twosome. On arrival we were told it was a slow day, a Tuesday morning at 10am. The marshall began shadowing our play a few holes into the 18, and eventually pulled up and asked us to hurry it up, but this was strange because were playing a scramble so we could play a fast foursome We were following our twosome who was advanced by about a full hole, but we were keeping up. Come to find out the semi-pro canadians behind us were giving Mark, the marshall, a hard time. At 9 holes we put the twosome behind our foursome, to see if that would help in some way, but Mark decided to ask the the twosome on the second nine to literally skip two holes to help the canadians have a better day. We all paid to play so when does this ever happen? Why did the angry canadians hold so much sway over Mark? I do not know. To his credit, he allowed the twosome to backtrack and play the missed holes, but seriously, I have never experienced anything like this. The pro shop was flatly not willing to help when I called after the game, and after a long wait they sent me to a manager phone's voicemail. My overall rating: this is well cleaned up muni-course with well placed bunkers, run by a poorly led team of folks who could all do more to make the paying golfer's experience a much better one. I will look for other courses on my next visit.
Listen snowflake, it was not me that made that a point of the conversation.
