The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Fast greens ...friendly staff
Members warned us on the practice tee about the fast greens. Great layout and enjoyable course for amateur golfers and low handicap wanna-be pros...lol. Well maintained facility all around and excellent value for our last round of golf on the. Holiday weekend!

Course was in very good shape for the end of the heavy play season. Staff was wonderful. Very friendly, very helpful. Great design. Would play again.
Beautiful Course
There was nothing to say other than everything was great. From the moment I arrived to the moment I left,
Needs work
Great people, the greens were aerated a week before we played which wasn’t a problem. The problem is the greens were wet for half the round. They were not cleared off. The main issue was that the greens were not cut or rolled..probably a 2 or 3 on the stint meter. Worst greens i have been on in years. Oh and all for $180 for a round. Hope this helps.
Work in progress
The greens are steep in places and often had small landing spots, but the surrounding turf conditions were not sufficiently maintained to make up-and-down a realistic possibility in many cases. Greens were just not rolling smoothly.
Excellent Course
The course is well maintained and has beautiful wooded holes. We enjoyed it very much.
Under the radar
Like to play this course whenever on HHI. Just think it’s a nice classic layout. Back nine gas some really good, tighter holes. Excellent finishing hole. Course was in good condition.
Played right on through
Course in great shape. Big alligator passing me by on cart path made my day.
Arguably, one of (if not the) round of my life!
Felt like the preacher in Caddy Shack AND I still have my soul!!!
Yardage markers
Yard markers not easily visible, no pictures of the holes on scorecard besides that the course was average
One of the best values there is
Challenging but fair. Good shots are rewarded and bad ones punished. Greens roll true. Each hole is tougher than it looks. Fairways are immaculate. Tee boxes were immaculate. Comes with unlimited range balls. 10/10. Everything you'd expect from a resort course on Hilton Head Island
Aerated, but still good!
Course was recently aerated, but otherwise in good shape. Greens were a little sandy but rolled better than we thought they might. Great layout and a top notch h place all around. Wish the restaurant was open but it seems they are renovating. Will be back!

Great course but wasn’t informed the greens were just punched. If paying the course premium that’s valuable information when making a decision.

Save your money
The Arthur Hills course was beat up. Then having customers pay for a course with no pre warning of air raided greens that were awfully long as heck also.. Not exactly what I was expecting on vacation. Not the best first impression. The Cupp course was better, but not worth the price of admission compared to other affordable gems in the area
Great course, greens were aerated , but still had fun , a got the hot deal at 1:00 , would play this course again
