Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

course in great summer condition, but bring your A game around greens
Condition + Rate
Awful condition for the current rate. Have played the course 20+ times and never seen it like this.
Greens are so bumpy any putt outside of a foot is not going in.
Fairways are half dead.
Played in a foursome and the other 3 were contemplating asking for a 50% refund due to conditions.
Course was in marginal condition.
We were very disappointed in the poor quality of the course. When asked of the staff, they excused it to its recent opening after punching the greens and fairways. Why not disclose that when reservations are made? One hole would be soaked, with constant need to place the ball somewhere a bit drier. Then the next hole would be a patchwork of recently laid sod. We played with a member who expressed the same dismay. He said the other course (same price) was far superior in its condition .
The pro shop was nice, the practice area was fine, but overall, I would not recommend this course at this time.
Very Nice Course
I'm a repeat customer. Love these courses. Laid out in the desert, on the outskirts of the hub-bub, these two courses--Cattail and Devil's Claw--have become some of my favorite courses. You travel through a nice desert environment the entire time you are on this course. The layout of the course is a challenge for all level of player, with the conditions as good in the summer as in the winter. On the day I played, there were some areas under repair, and the greens had been recently punched and sanded, but that is the nature of the course superintendant--they get on top of it before it becomes a complaint.
Lack of ability to cope with human accidents
In today 's course, there was an accident where a beverage cart was overturned and a female driver was laid under the cart. My friend and I lifted the cart, called 911 to catch the incident, and the other player called the golf course office and announced the news. After that, there were only two employees, but they did not ask for the situation at the time of the accident and did not say thank you to the customers who helped. My friend and I ran as soon as we saw the cart fall. My friend, who was a bit uncomfortable with the legs, ran with me. However, the employee walked off the cart slowly to the scene of the accident, and his facial expression was full of irritation. Anyone who enjoys golf can suffer injuries or accidents. At the golf course here, I think I should probably think I can die.
Staff is ruthless
Love the course but they always treat you like an amateur there
Good course, slow play
Course was in good condition and layout was good. Line up at first tee box for early morning round didn’t make a whole lot of sense, considering there was a starter & marshal(s) present leading to a 4:40 round.
Enjoyable round
Love the layout. Variety of holes. Made you think off the tee. Great staff. Good practice area. Decent condition although the sand traps did not have enough sand in them and the greens were a bit shaggy and somewhat slow. Clubhouse food very good. Overall an excellent experience. Will be back.
Beautiful Desert Course
We played a wonderful round of golf. The course is in excellent condition. Greens rolled well, the layout was challenging for the three of us, and we all have varying amounts of experience. Beautiful trees and views. Saw some wildlife - coyote ran across the green after we finished putting, rabbits, roadrunners, etc. No snakes.
Definitely will come back!
Marshal the pace of play
I actually really like this course. Unfortunately they put us out in the afternoon after a junior tourney. The little brats (we saw their antics) have not been taught anything about pace of play and nor did the golf club enforce it which was absurd. Frankly given the circumstances, they simply should not have put us out on the course.
Having said that they were very fair on the refund.
Unfortunate.
Jekyll & Hyde
All I can say is I paid on golf now to play with 3 others. Showed up and they let me out solo ( not complaining about that ) playedthe front 9 in a hour and half . Only to turn to back 9 and a complete stop . It took 3 hours for the back 9 ugh
High end course with excellent fairways and riough . Greens could have been better
The course is very well maintained and is a high end course with an excellent facility and amenities. Greens had dead spots but rolled well
Course was in excellent shape. The greens are showing some sort of virus or winter issue but does not effect the putting. They hold shots well and rolling around a 10 or11
Great Buy, Great Course
Can't ask for anything better on a sunday afternoon
Always enjoy Whirlwind courses
Everything was wonderful. Only complaint is that the course was cart path only. On other courses that are that way Golf Now shows this information on the reservation form. This one did not. Got a sense from the starter that the course website did not have that information posted either. Otherwise a great experience.
