Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.

Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.

Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

An Upper-End Course

Once in a while you come across a new find. I had almost no sense of what this course was like going in. I saw reviews and knew the winter rates were usually high for this course, but otherwise I had no real sense of what to expect. With a hot deal, I was able to justify the longer than usual drive to get to this course, and I was glad I did. This is a Sheraton property, and to be expected, it was a very exceptional facility. The club house and restaurant were upscale and modern, the course conditions were at a very good level for this time of year, and the staff was great. The course is not super challenging, but there are several hole layouts that are interesting and a treat to play. The greens were fast, but true. You could definitely get a feel for how to play them after a few holes. Wonderful course. I hope to play it again soon.

Wonderful condition

Course in great shape. Greens are some of the best in Phoenix area. Only thing missing is shade at this course. Plenty of drinking water to stay hydrated.

Hot or Not - Worth it!

Great layout. The course was in fairly good shape. They have recently reopened the course after aerating the greens and some other up keep on the course. You could still slightly see on some of the greens that they had been aerated, but overall the greens rolled true. They were a little slow, but that was probably due to the heat. Overall fairways and tees were in good shape. During the summer months the value is well worth it. Just make sure you tee off early and have plenty of water on hand. It was nice to see the drink cart when it came around, which was about the right amount. Hit'em straight and have fun.

Whirlwind - Devil's Claw

Originally reserved for Cattail, but the starter mentioned to us that they aerated the greens, so he allowed us the option of playing Devil's Claw which we chose. Course was in great shape. Fairways are decent width and mowed tight. Greens were great and ran true but were not super fast. Staff was very friendly. Cart lady approached us at least 4-5 times during our round. Ranger brought us mango towels as it was starting to get hot. Clubhouse lunch was delicious and the staff was awesome as well.

Challenging desert course

I have played both of the courses at Whirlwind and it's always a treat and a challenge to play them. It's desert golf, fairways are reasonably wide, greens are excellent and a nice mix of holes. The practice area is wonderful and the staff is professional. I'm an 8 right now and it's not easy to shoot in the 70's. A little bit tricky to find.

Excellent Offering!

The offerings were outstanding! We enjoyed the round and the course. Minor issues around some of the greens but the vast majority are in great shape. The only change needed is to cut back on some of the plants etc around the course direction rocks. Some are very hard to see!

A Beautiful Course in a Peaceful Setting

This is an outstanding test of golf with amazing conditions on pristine fairways, undulating smooth greens, and manicured tee boxes.

The cart greeting is efficient and gracious, the pro shop contact, Drew, was a little feisty but sincere, and CiCi the starter was the Bomb. She was personality plus and so helpful. She is from Sweden and speaks like a native.

The Ranger was an old guy from Toledo, Ohio who was efficient and loved to scare the newbies about all the "snakes". We never saw any. He helped keep the pace of play moving. We finished under 4 hours despite quite a few foursomes ahead of us.

This was a quiet and beautiful journey among the natural habitats of the Gila Indian reservation. Birds abound along with multiple rabbit sightings and the ever present Prarie Dogs.

This is a challenging course with difficult carries on many holes but with the fairways so pure you can never fault this course for a bad shot.

Only issue at all is we wanted something to eat after the round, but the beautiful grill closed up at 4 pm. Seemed very odd to 4 hungry/thirsty guys.

Good Combination of Challenging and Fun

Cattail has always been a favorite of mine. It sets up very nicely to my eye. It gives me the challenge I want at 6300 yards without beating me up. Most of the holes give you a spacious landing area and then narrow up at the greens. There are 2 par 4's, numbers 5 and 14, that you have to hit less than a driver for position. My favorite hole is number 16 that bends to the right around the back of the hotel pool area, that dares you to cut a tee shot tightly over the bunkers. If you cut it, a short iron can set you up for a birdie putt. Cattail is not a true desert course, but is a testing layout to keep your ball on the green grass and out of the expansive waste areas. It is fun for all if you play from the proper teebox. I have just acknowledged my age and moved up to the Silver tees from the Golds. The Black tees have some amazing teeboxes that give you the full 7300 yard test. Whirlwind is the best place to play in the Chandler area and should be on your 'must play' list.

Great track

I played the TPC stadium course the day before and felt this was a better layout and a third the price. I highly recommend playing this track.
