Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

Whirlwind Golf
I have been wanting to play these courses (Cattail & Devils Claw) and though I found the course to be in good condition and somewhat challenging for the same value or less, I have played others in the area that were much more scenic, perhaps I will try Devils Claw and it will impress me more.
Whirlwind: Devils's Claw & Cattail - High end ho hum
Golf in the Valley of the Sun. Desert courses are offered at an almost exponential level. The very best are memorable and you will pay no small amount to have that experience. But the courses that are, let's say, second tier courses like those at Whirlwind, provide almost nothing truly memorable. That is not to say that they aren't good tests, as they surely are. They just are not particularly compelling, nor memorable, certainly not when one is spending over $125/150 just to tee it up.
Living in Scottsdale allows one to be somewhat discerning about where to play and when. Golf Now and to a much lesser degree, TeeOff.com, have made it so that when one has flexibility of time, rates to play become much more palatable. Even so, with such a range of great courses (and that includes a quick drive down to Tucson or up to Sedona or Prescott), playing Whirlwind at any time other than in the Summer when the rates are more in line with the experience makes little sense to me. Moreover, when anyone I know is heading from the wintry north to our warm environs, I can literally think of at least 15 other courses I would point them in the direction of...
Add this course to your list of must play
Greens were running fast and the course was in excellent condition. Five tee boxes allowed for varied skill levels. Staff were welcoming and attentive. Only complaint was the pace of play...5 hours.
Whirlwind Cattail
Lush course conditions, for sure. Course interesting and well laid out. Pace of play good on a weekday afternoon. I walked, so If you also walk, prepare to hustle a bit on many holes with a fair amount of distance from green to tee. Greens were not overly fast, but smooth. Practice areas very nice. Good expierence overall!
Excellent course
I played WhirlWinds Cattail and the course is excellent. Challenging course with a lot of tough holes and great views. I forget what hole we were on but my group had seen a wild group of mustangs running in the background of one of the par threes. One of the coolest experiences I have had specifically on a golf course. Great service and an excellent value for winter rates inn Golf Now.
On par with the best courses in Arizona
The only negative thing I’d say is that I booked Cattails on golf now, but the pro shop said I was on devil’s claw. It was my first time on either, so I didn’t make a fuss about it. Devil’s Claw was a really fun course, with decent elevation changes and near perfectly maintained fairways. The greens were really fast, which counterbalanced the somewhat spacious fairways. It was a beautiful course. I’ll definitely be a regular here.
Troon golf
The course is a great layout and the staff is very helpful. Course was in good condition, but soft. Had to clean mud of every fairway shot. This made the course play long.
Golf with a view
Golfing at Whirlwind Golf Club on the Cattail course was fabulous. I played the the final day of a week-long conference. The spectacular views all around the track were quite distracting at times, but I chalked this up to my first visit. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my solo round and I look forward to returning.
CATTAIL COURSE
The course was in great condition for this time of year. It is a very challenging course as the par 3's are fairly long and may have a bunker in front of the green. Time of play was 4 hr 10 minutes. Facilities are excellent.
Perfect condition and great value
Greens were great, fairways clean for the whole track. I have played both Whirlwind courses now and Cattail was great. Devil's Claw is fun, but Cattail was best all around. Excited to play it again.
Becoming One of My Top 5 Valley Courses
Having only experienced this course for the first time earlier this summer, this course is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The course has an interesting layout, the fairways and greens are always in top condition and it is not so severe as to punish a few poor shots. The clubhouse and the general upkeep of the course surroundings are definitely upscale, yet tasteful for the area. The course is worth the trip and the extra bump in the summer rates.
On course amenties
We played this course on a very hot day, over 100 degrees. The course offers drinking water on several holes also towels and cups if you do not bring your own. On hole 13 the players assistant came by with ice cold towels for all of us. Perfect timing because the heat was starting to affect us. Plus the towels were different colours so you didn't have to worry about mixing yours up with your partner. These types of gestures go along way in customer service.
Well done Whirlwind. We will see you next year. Thank you.
PS. The pro shop has a very nice selection of ladies wear and great selection of Footjoy shoes.
Great value
Excellent condition for the summer months. Plenty of cold water on the course.
Summer golf in az
This course is always challenging and in great shape
Loved the ice cold towels brought out to us on the course
Great Troon course
Course is always in great shape . Course was quiet due to Labir day, so pace of play was great and with the low summer rate, it was one of the best deals this summer .
GolfNow hotdeal was worth every penny. Fairways and greens were well kept. Marshall kept pace perfectly just by being visible. Beverage cart was great in finding us a few tunes through the round. Staff in restaurant, after round were friendly, food was good, and drinks were appreciated.
Top class resort course!
My wife and I played the Cattail Course. The course was in great shape considering the hot weather. I would highly recommend this golf course and can only rave about the practice facilities.
