Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

Coarse great. Underwhelmed with staff
Great coarse, layout. Disappointed when I arrived there was a fee for my wife to ride along, because I called ahead and asked if she could, they said "no problem". Did not mention fee.
Also, starter directed me to the range which was closing...when I asked associate on range if I could hit 10 balls, he said no and directed me to other side of range...which looked like a mile away.
Enjoyed Cattail in November
Played Whirlwind Cattail this week and had a great day. Pace of play was 3 3/4 hours for 2 players. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Course if in great shape and some scenic holes
Would play again
GolfNow
I booked this tee time off golf now and they said nothing about cart path only. I had a client tell me to book a tee time and not to worry about my cost because he was going to treat me to golf. So I book the time and get there all excited to play this course to come to find out it was cart path only. I felt embarrassed that my client paid for two rounds at 109 each for cart path only golf. I did not complain because I didn't want to cause trouble. But i think golf now and the resort need to communicate better
Wild time..
Had a great time with my brother playing the scores for the first time. Would have preferred if it were not cartpath only. Fairways and greens were soft. Highlight of the trip was seeing a bobcat..
Cattail
Fabulous day. No one in front of us, no one in back of us. Beautiful weather (but called could for arizonians). Course was over seeded so it was cart path only. Went well as carts had GPS. Our 4 some was done in 4 hrs, 5 minutes. Would definitely golf again.
Wonderful Whirlwind
A beautiful well manicured desert style golf course. Pretty forgiving fairways but challenging just the same. Greens were some of the quickest I've played this month (although still not super fast) even though the course was recently overseeded. There is a beautiful practice area with a grass range, chipping green and huge putting green. The clubhouse is well laid out and has a lovely dining area with patio overlooking the putting green. The staff were very accommodating when I told them that my two playing partners were going to be late and moved my tee-time back by 25 minutes. My only disappointment was that when I booked my tee-time through Golf Now it indicated that the carts were able to access the course at 90 degrees but I was told on check-in that it was cart path only. Definitely would come back to play here.
This course is in great condition.
WE played the Cat Tail course and while a bit windy, the round was enjoyable. The tees, fairways and greens were in great condition. Greens held the ball nicely. The course was not too busy so pace of play was very good. Under 4 hours to play.
Great experience
Really good layout with generous fairways for the average golfer with well placed bunkers to challenge the accuracy and length for lower handicappers. Staff were helpful and the cart service was regular every 3 to 4 holes. I will definitely visit again.
Very well kept, its Troon
Fairways in great shape , greens somewhat not always rolling true, having 2-3 puts its sad, if visiting this part of the region will play this course
Whirlwind Cattail
This course was challenging and fun. Pace of play needs to be opened up more. Four person groupings caused the course to bottle up and slow down everything. It's a long course and 12 minute intervals with four players just doesn't work. We were a twosome paired with another couple, and having to wait for people in front of us the whole time. We were 20 minutes behind because of this.
Course was great
Course was in great shape in a time of year most are overseeding, they have two 18 hole courses so they can keep one going while closing one. Will definitely play here again. Great price on the hot deal as well.
Witnessed Hole-In-One!
Don't see that very often. We let twosome play thru an early par 3. Standing just off the green, our threesome saw it happen the entire way. Cool.
BTW... The course was in great shape. I'll be back.
Cattail is First Rate!
Course was in great condition for this time of year, and the greens rolled quite nicely. This could be a more challenging course layout if you choose the wrong tees or take unnecessary risks. But otherwise, a truly enjoyable course. I'll be back!
good value
paid under $20 to play this course. I had to skip one hole because a foursome wouldn't let me play through. otherwise, it was a great value.
Great day
I played as part of a golf package through the Wild Horse casino hotel . A friend came up from Tucson. Right from the start is was a great experience. The breakfast was great and we went off as a two-some 30 minutes before our scheduled tee time. Beautiful condition, greens were above average in speed and putted true. Loved the whole experience.

Great summer value
Summer arête deal on Golfnow , very good deal for this course (Cattail). Coarse was in very good shape . Foursome is front of us slowed pace of play, despite push from the ranger .
Nice resort features
Great for a resort course , I would not play in season there are far to many course in there price range that I like better.
Poor Customer Service - They can't tell time
Great Course but staff was clueless on the day we played:
1) No mention when we checked in that the range was open but hitting from the back, there was no one at the carts or anywhere to be found, we eventually figured it out.
2) As we are hitting a few balls on the range we are told we need to go to hole #9 (yes hole #9) immediately, but after some discussion he had our tee-time wrong.
3) After 1 hour 50 minutes we are finishing hole #17 (nine holes played) and told by ranger we are playing too slow and need to pick up our pace. We finished the 18 hole round in 3 hrs, 35 min.
