Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

Play it!
Great practice facility! Friendly and helpful staff. Great course layout. Course was a phenomenal condition. Great value!
Best course ive played in years
Amazing course, best conditions Ive seen/played ever in phoenix. Tee'd off at 1pm played in 3.5 hours from the tips and then played another 18 in 2 hours. Finished just as it got dark. AWESOME. I think the $50 hot deal must have been a fluke but so happy I found it. I think its normally 2-3 times that
fun vacation course-great condition
Played the cattail course on a prez day vacation...it was in very good shape, greens moderately fast and they rolled well. We played the silver tees (6300 yds) and that length was very comfortable for our group. Enjoyed the layout and the staff was friendly.
Nice desert course
Typical casino type golf course. Good warm up facilities, Tees, fairways and greens all generous and in great condition. Due to a mixup with the starter we had two twosomes playing in between three foursomes. Not a pleasant round for anyone.
Fairways pristine. Greens very fast.
Loved the layout and course condition. Greens are tough - fast, subtle breaks and sharp edges to the cups. Lots of potential 3 putts but an overal great golf experience.
Some of the best turf in Arizona.
The fairways are broad and the density of the grass is the best I have seen in Arizona. One gets a great lie every time. The greens hold shots and are smooth and fast for putting.
Southeast valleys best!!
Course is always well manicured. Staff always friendly and the views are great!
TERRIBLE Customer Service
For a Troon managed facility the management of this course is seriously lacking. I played on Nov. 23/16 and had an on-course issue due to an error / misrepresentation in the online booking system.
I reported this to the golf shop at the end of my round. I was asked by the attendant, "What can we do to make this better?". I gave him my name, number and email and was told I would be contacted. As of Dec. 9/16 I have not been contacted.
I have sent the General Manager an email, one of the people that was supposed to contact me - who hasn't yet, and he has not responded.
It's peak golf season and clearly the $$ is more important to Whirlwind. If you have an issue be sure to get it sorted out before you leave the golf course.
My favorite Gary Panks design
Played cattail
Good course but not amazing
Customer service-below average for Troon
I heard that they have a great pb & j buffalo burger but unfortunately the grill was not open for dinner after or round
The course is in a great area (202 & 10) wild horse pass hotel & casino, outlets...
Conditions-very good
I thought cattail was more interesting than devils claw but they are similar
The layout was pretty easy but still interesting; water, very wide fairways, areas surrounding the greens are cut short which is nice in that it leaves the ground game as an option
Value-we paid $80. This is the max that I would pay
Greens-9.5? We thought they were fast until we played Quintero the next day
4 out of 10 on the doak scale
8 out of McKenzie's 13 design principles
I'd rank it as my 25th favorite course in az (middle of the pack)
Coarse great. Underwhelmed with staff
Great coarse, layout. Disappointed when I arrived there was a fee for my wife to ride along, because I called ahead and asked if she could, they said "no problem". Did not mention fee.
Also, starter directed me to the range which was closing...when I asked associate on range if I could hit 10 balls, he said no and directed me to other side of range...which looked like a mile away.
Enjoyed Cattail in November
Played Whirlwind Cattail this week and had a great day. Pace of play was 3 3/4 hours for 2 players. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Course if in great shape and some scenic holes
Would play again
GolfNow
I booked this tee time off golf now and they said nothing about cart path only. I had a client tell me to book a tee time and not to worry about my cost because he was going to treat me to golf. So I book the time and get there all excited to play this course to come to find out it was cart path only. I felt embarrassed that my client paid for two rounds at 109 each for cart path only golf. I did not complain because I didn't want to cause trouble. But i think golf now and the resort need to communicate better
Wild time..
Had a great time with my brother playing the scores for the first time. Would have preferred if it were not cartpath only. Fairways and greens were soft. Highlight of the trip was seeing a bobcat..
Cattail
Fabulous day. No one in front of us, no one in back of us. Beautiful weather (but called could for arizonians). Course was over seeded so it was cart path only. Went well as carts had GPS. Our 4 some was done in 4 hrs, 5 minutes. Would definitely golf again.
Wonderful Whirlwind
A beautiful well manicured desert style golf course. Pretty forgiving fairways but challenging just the same. Greens were some of the quickest I've played this month (although still not super fast) even though the course was recently overseeded. There is a beautiful practice area with a grass range, chipping green and huge putting green. The clubhouse is well laid out and has a lovely dining area with patio overlooking the putting green. The staff were very accommodating when I told them that my two playing partners were going to be late and moved my tee-time back by 25 minutes. My only disappointment was that when I booked my tee-time through Golf Now it indicated that the carts were able to access the course at 90 degrees but I was told on check-in that it was cart path only. Definitely would come back to play here.
This course is in great condition.
WE played the Cat Tail course and while a bit windy, the round was enjoyable. The tees, fairways and greens were in great condition. Greens held the ball nicely. The course was not too busy so pace of play was very good. Under 4 hours to play.
Great experience
Really good layout with generous fairways for the average golfer with well placed bunkers to challenge the accuracy and length for lower handicappers. Staff were helpful and the cart service was regular every 3 to 4 holes. I will definitely visit again.
Very well kept, its Troon
Fairways in great shape , greens somewhat not always rolling true, having 2-3 puts its sad, if visiting this part of the region will play this course
