Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

Love the Cattail
Cattail is pretty and playable, with lots of green around the greens, but still enjoyably challenging. If you want blind tee shots and approaches and 3 or more tiers per green, play the companion course, Devil's Claw, but make sure Steve Williams is on the bag. That's a no thank you for me.
This is a resort in the middle of the south metro desert. It has beautiful and extensive practice areas. I'm not a big fan of resorts, and I haven't stayed there, but overall this is really well done. Lovely clubhouse, nicely sited.
Twilight on Cattail
Played at 2pm on Wednesday in 4.25 hours. Weather was perfect, so I didn't mind a slower afternoon round. Paired with locals which helped because course knowledge is important on certain holes. Greens were running around 10, and the fairways were in great shape. Overall a very nice course.
First time at Whirlwind
Facilities are above average as noted in my ratings. Teed off promptly on the Catclaw course at 1:03, but the pace was just so so at a 4 1/2 hr. round. We were very happy to pay $70 each to play a quality resort such as Whirlwind.
cattail
Course was in excellent shape. Greens were smooth and nice pace.(not scary fast but nice) This is a very nice desert golf experience. Some course are more scenic, another nice troon experience. kind of pricey but we got a deal online.
Great day and course spoiled by slow play
Another great az golf experience but it was spoiled by super slow play and nobody did anything about it. I'm starting to think that a person should stay away from resort courses since they all seem to have high prices and super slow play. Only saw one ranger and didn't see him until late in the round.
Good rolling layout with So. Mtn backdrop
Course was in good shape, interesting layout and challenging. However, we complained about slow play but nothing was done about it.
Impressive
The course is in excellent shape, the greens rolled true with nice speed and shuttle breaks which definitely gets you if you can't read breaks well. Great challenge, loved it and have re-booked already to play 36. Only fault was we couldn't,t get anything to eat after 5.
Whirlwind
Solid course......................................
Challenging but fair
Several friends had recommended this course, and we were not disappointed... It was fun to play, challenging, but fair. We are hoping to play it again, at least once! With so many courses to chose from, we do not often want to repeat , but this is one that we would.
Great Course, marshal a little pushy
Would recommend course. However Our foursome played in under 4 hrs yet marshal was our case for taking 5 mins to pace out who had kp. Course was in great shape but the marshal ruined the last few holes
Great Course always in nice condition
Great Place to play two great courses, both are always in excellent shape, with good staff, bar, food facilities, etc...
Highly recommend this Troon Course
Very good course but a bit over price
Greens very good. Fairways good but divots not filled which seemed to be consistant. Pace of play was good . I paid 100 for twilight , too pricey for the overall value.
beautiful course
will play this again! the greens are beautiful, and the fairwaysare plush
will return soon
The condition of the course were amazing. And the views were outstanding. Challenging course for all levels.
Good Day!
The course was in good shape, some bumps on greens due to ball marks not being repaired.
Whirlwind
Course was beautiful and in great shape but greens a little hairy and difficult to read as they have many double and even triple tiered greens.my only true complaint was the length of the round which was an astonishing 5 hrs and 13 minutes to be exact!!!!
Cattail
Great quality layout. Outstanding practice facility. Pay attention to the grain of the greens because it will affect putts. Very slow up hill into the grain. Fairways and rough were so lush the ball just sits up like on a tee so beautiful it was unreal! Great place to play
Disappointed
We played as the group behind the Club Championship, the first nine holes took 3 hours, the 2nd nine was a little faster. The course was in good shape but when voicing our opinion and asking for a reason or explanation the golf pro in the golf shop said he couldn't help us at all because we didn't pay any money and to take it up with golfnow. Needless to say a good day with friends turned bad by someone who has ZERO customer service skills....
Best greens I've played in AZ
Booked on Golfnow and get a fairly good price.
The course was in good shape, but the greens were really exceptional. Pretty quick probably about 10, but very smooth and rolled true. They were fun to putt on and better than any of the other courses i've played this year on my stay in AZ.
I cant wait to go back!
A great layout for high and low handicaps alike!
I play here often and it never disappoints, the fairways are always perfect, the greens smooth without being insanely fast and we are always finished under 4 and a half hours. Anyone visiting Phoenix should stop and play one of these courses!
