Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

very well maintained
played the cattail.. course is in excellent condition.. well manicured aprons around the greens.. 1 of the best maintained courses I played on a 12 day May/June golf trek
great condition
course was in great condition for june in phoenix. fun course to play. staff is great, excellent practice facility
.the course was in excellent condition and the playing time is very satisfactory.
The fairways were in excellent condition and the greens very well maintained. The pace of play very good for a Sunday afternoon.
This course challenges your game from tee to green, ample fairways, challenging approach shots, great greens...
I have played this course 3-4 times now, I am impressed with how well maintained they are able to keep this course, even in the extreme summer heat. The fairways give ample room for your drive, but you will pay a price for wayward drives. Approach shots are challenging due to strategically placed bunkers, and varying elevations. The best part of the course to me are the greens. They are impecabbly maintained, and roll true! A slight mis-read and the putt is missed!
I Love playing these courses (Cattail and Devils Claw), I will surely play as often as I can.
course normal resort course
the course condition was what you would expect from a 100dollar plus greenfee course. greens, fairways and tee boxs were good.Even though the staff was friendly you seemed to get the idea they thought they were doing you a favor to let you play their course.I have seen this attitude at several of the courses managed by this company
2nd visit. Cattail was in great shape and the greens were excellent
Fairways were lush. Some spots mushy, but not too bad, especially since the cushy green coverage was excellent. Greens were soft and medium speed, in great shape, rolled true.
Cartgirl was seen often, pace of play was great because they only put out tee times every 10 minutes. Rarely had to wait.
2 women and 2 men in our foursome, and the front tees were positioned often in a place where the women could already be there waiting to hit after we played the golds.
Not a fan of the sand, was very wet and compact in some bunkers, but at lleast the practice bunker was typical. Great short game and practice area, unlimited balls to hit, and they were in good shape not split or so worn out they were missing dimples.
Good food in the grill.
Very playable course with forgiving fairways sprinkled with bunkers in landing areas and fronting most greens
Course was in very good shape from tee to green. (Albeit a bit soggy from a little overwatering of the chicken manure fertilizer that was being applied. Yes, twas a bit ripe on the back nine!)
Fairways are relatively wide and forgiving. Greens medium sized with moderate undulations and some subtle breaks near the cups. Maybe it was just where I placed shots, but it felt that every approach shot to the green I had to carry a bunker with the pin placed strategically behind it. I played from the Gold and my wife from the Jade tees. Different "looks" of landing areas from different tees on each hole - Gold tee appeared to be a very tight landing area, but Jade tee you could how wide-open the landing area actually was. These "looks" changed on each hole. Reminded me of a Dick & Rick Phelps-designed course in this aspect).
The 2 of us followed 3 groups of ladies (who were having a great time) and we all played in less than 4 hours never seeing the 2 guys behind us who "didn't want to play with a girl".
We would recommend the course to most anyone, especially at Arizona summer prices!
Excellent condition and fun
The Cattail course is great fun and in great shape. The pace of play was a bit slow but there seemed to be a genuine effort on behalf of the ranger to keep things moving.
The course was in great shape and pace was not an issue.
The course and staff were great. The fairways were in good shape and the greens rolled true. Overall an enjoyable experience.
Either course at Whirlwind you just can't go wrong.
I've played here often. It's a great facility well managed with a very good staff. We had a slow day 5+hours which is unusual. Both courses are great. Have fun
Great Conditions
Even though they have punched the greens on the cattail course putts still ran true without being bumpy. Pace of play was good player assistant was around often to ensure people moved along. Fairways were prestine.
Great golf experience. Greens were wonderful.
The whole staff at the course were very competant and friendly. Complementary bag tags, yardage book, etc were nice to haves. Practice facility included a great chipping and wedge play hole, good sand practice area, and traditional range. Both courses at Whirlwind are very good and the tee selections allow you to taylor the difficulty level to your game. Worth your visit!
Slow
Whast makes people want to stand around for over 4 hours in the oppresive heat? You would think they would want to institute the 12 foot gimme rule. We stood on every tee for at least 5 minutes. The course itself was in decent shape except Troon seems to like to pille all the sand under the face of the bunker and none in the middle. Meaning that if you hit a ball into the middle of the bunker get ready for a thin shot out, and if ytou hit it under the liip, prepare to be plugged. Rangers pass by and wave at you and typically do nothing.Whirlwind is what is wrong with golf today. Too much emphasis on aesthetics, and not enough on playing the game.
Enjoyable Layout
Cattail is a nice layout that can be great for all abilities. With the variety of tee boxes it was a great challenge for myself and my wife.
great course in troon tradition
Great course, beautiful greens, well groomed fairways, challenging but player friendly.
Scenery would be great if it weren't for light posts and high-tension hydro lines criss-crossing the course.
Great scenery and multiple tee boxes for all levels of plat
This course has everything. Green grass everywhere....firm greens that rolled nicely...beautiful dessert views.... and a very friendly staff...and also a great location in the valley. I will play here again
Real nice course, not to difficult but some nice holes.
Would like to see brighter clearer markers at tee boxes, that being my only suggestion. Have played it several times now and will be back!
course is a nice desert course, fast greens, hard for me to read
great value. I played with some guests staying at the resort. They each paid $125 to my $75
Awesome
Really loved this course.Very challenging yet very playable.
Can't wait to play Devils Claw
Great course, great service
Whirlwind is one of those courses that you MUST play if you're in the Phoenix-Scottsdale area. Great practice facility, course in great condition and excellent service. They provide with a yardage book that is very helpful. I played at Cattail course. Greens are receptive, fast but not extremely crazy. Definitely to come back and try Devil's Claw next time!!
