Whirlwind Golf Club - The Devil's Claw Course
About
Devil's Claw is one of two golf courses at Whirlwind G.C., part of the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler. In addition to its views of four mountain ranges -- South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains, the San Tan Mountains and the Superstitions -- Devil's Claw overflows with Native American culture.
A round on the Devil's Claw at Whirlwind Golf Club begins on Greasy Mountain, a par-4 424-yarder that faces Muh-wah Ha-dahk - the Gila River Indian Community's name for South Mountain. Things get long on the fifth, Maricopa Journey, a par-5 593-yarder designed to memorialize the travels of the Pee-Posh (or Maricopa tribe) from the Colorado River to where the Gila and Salt rivers meet. Go home via Going Home, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 442 yards from the Black tees. As the Gila River Indian Community sings it, "Our songs are ending as you go your separate ways, take along with you the good songs that were sung here today, as within your hearts."
Don't go straight home: You can still fit in another song after golfing the Devil's Claw golf course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in the clubhouse, which features a fully stocked bar and plenty of plasma televisions for relaxing and catching up on other sports.

Sanded greens?
I always love playing Whirlwind as its typically in great condition and awesome views. A very pure desert course. Unfortunately this time around, for a rate of $160, we played on greens that were sandy in the middle of prime time golf season. No warning that they were sandy on Golfnow or by staff on the course. Even mentioned it to the cart guys after the round and they didn’t know it was and couldn’t explain why. Overall, pace of play was fine, conditions tee to green were solid minus the sanded greens. Caused putts to bounce more than normal and harder to hold a line. I would still recommend playing here, but not for $160.
Fun Round
Nice layout. We played from the gold tee. A lot of 350-420 yard par 4's. It made for a challenging round. Safe off the tee left a longer iron in. Driver off the tee had better find the fairway. Greens were receptive. I would definitely play again and recommend it. I prefer this over the Cattail course.
Great Track! Well maintained and services are professional. Fair yet challenging.
Great desert feel
My wife (22 hcp) and I (9 hcp) played here Feb 11 on the Devils Claw course. Was greeted very kindly with a cart when we pulled up. Pro shop staff very friendly. Bar and restaurant staff were great. Prices very reasonable. Driving range, chipping and putting greens were immaculate. The starter was very kind and helpful as this was our first time playing here. You will want to keep the ball in play! Ball goes into the desert you will probably not find it. But the fairways and rough are plenty wide enough where this shouldn't be too much of a problem. The course from tee to green was in immaculate condition! Weather was perfect. I loved this course and would definitely play here again. If I had to mention anything bad about the course it would be the bunkers were not all raked and ball marks on the green were plentiful. Now this is not an issue with the course itself but rather with the individual players of the course. Apparently not all golfers are courteous. Go figure!
Love this course
Course was money as usual. Greens were impeccable, fairways in great shape, and pins in challenging positions. I would play this course every day if I could!
Friendly starter would significantly improve experience
Frost delay for 45, course in great shape and good pace of play. Unfortunately the Starter was extremely unfriendly and set the tone for the day/round. Otherwise friendly Starter assists, clubhouse employee and girl in the beverage cart.
Awesome course
The course was in perfect condition. Very interesting holes. Somewhat challenging but yet it doesn't punish you for a poor Drive. Kind of like a resort course. My only complaint about pricing is just that golf in general is overpriced these days because of its popularity. Relatively speaking $100 to play this course was acceptable and worth it.
Great Course
Awesome course and perfect conditions. Even though my driver wasn't working I was still hitting lasers into the green. If my buddy JR was playing I would have taken all of his money! Great time!
Beautiful course/design
My family of 4 played during the Xmas holiday week - what a gorgeous course! Loved the layout - generous fairways on most holes, thus not too penal for a mild-moderately off line tee shot. Be aware early afternoon tee times might be delayed due to am tee time players demanding a solo cart due to COVID - just a fyi. Regardless, I will definately be back my next visit to AZ!
Great Layout
Very well maintained, great layout and reasonable for the money. Pace of play was great! Bloodies were even better!
Highly recommend
Great course...played two times now. Always amazing
Staff Friendliness was great
Dealt with Scott and Shawn and they did everything in there power to help get us on after the frost delay we had. Was able to get 18 in and the course was in phenomenal shape.
Enjoyable Round
It was great to be back playing Whirlwind’s Devil’s Claw golf course. The course was in immaculate condition.
We were teamed up with a father-son twosome and got along fabulously.
