Hilton Head National Golf Club
About
Set across 300 acres of lush Carolina Lowcountry, Hilton Head National Golf Club has earned its reputation as one of the region’s premier public courses.
A unique collaboration between golf legends Gary Player and Bobby Weed, the course offers two distinct nines that complement each other beautifully. Weed designed the front nine with larger, more dramatically contoured greens to contrast and balance Player’s strategically crafted back nine.
Among the most memorable holes is the challenging par-4 sixth — bordered along its entire right side by the course’s largest lake and protected by deep pot bunkers near the green. The back nine features several standout holes, including the long and demanding 16th, which ranks as the No. 1 handicap hole for women and No. 5 for men. And finishing strong, the par-4 eighteenth tests precision with a deep marsh running the length of the narrow fairway.
Together, these elements create a course that’s scenic, strategic, and rewarding for players of all skill levels.

Average course
The course is in good shape. Fairways are excellent, not chewed up, greens rolled well too. Play was not rapid but that was due the people I was playing with.
I did not find the course overly exciting. Kind of blah to be honest. For the money play Oyster Reef.
Probably would not go back
Great course, but buggy
My wife and I had not played here in about 12 years. Greens were a bit sandy still from recent aeration process, but the course was in great shape overall. However, the gnats drove us crazy! The pro shop sells "No Natz" natural spray, but the pro shop guys had not waredn us we'd need it (learned about it from the bag guy as we were leaving); make sure to ask!
Good course at great value
Played on a Hot Deal -- great value. Greens were punched but I knew that going in. Excellent layout...best be hitting the driver straight. Fairways were a little high due to 2 days of rain -- no run on the tee ball whatsoever. Played the blue tees @ 6200 -- a lot of that yardage is in 2 long par 4's and 2 long par 5's. The last par 5 -- 15 I think -- was incredibly long and tight -- large trees eliminate the left side approach.
Good challenge...lots of fun.
Great as always!
I play Hilton Head National every year. It has yet to disappoint. It is $20-30 cheaper than the on island courses and in better shape than most of them. The greens are smooth and fast. A lot of the greens are sloping and elevated. So just missing the green will often result in a tough up and down. The fairways are plenty wide and cut nicely. Tee boxes in good shape. Course will not beat you up. But you will get yourself in some trouble if you aren't hitting the green. The word is the owners wanna turn the place into a huge development. This would be a tragedy. So my advice is go play there now while you can.
Best Public Course near Bluffton
If you haven't played Hilton Head National you should...before its too late. Rumors are the course will be lost to development. In the meantime, play it for the best greens in the area! It also has a fair, diverse and challenging layout. A couple of surprises for fist time players so stay alert! Some very unique and cool looking squirrels and lots of other indigenous wildlife. Will play this one again soon. My wife loves it too!
Excellent
Played this course the day after playing May River. Not quite the same conditions and layout but for a quarter of the price, I was surprised how well it stacked up. Excellent greens, interesting layout, decent challenge from the tips. I will be back.
Great course!
Always excellent shape! Kind of slow play this day but probably because of two days of rain previously.
Nice course, Great value
This course is better than most on HHI and a much better value! The course is lovely, in good condition, and fun to play. There are plans in the works to close the course and redevelop it into more housing. Hope that doesn't happen anytime soon. For now, the course is well maintained and staffed.
Great condition and service
First time playing and will be at top of my Hilton Head list from now on. Staff was great and very attentive from bag drop to exit. Good, fair layout with no tricks. Beautiful setting with no developments, etc. Just golf. Greens were some of the best I have ever played in HH. Highly recommend.
.
Great value, Good course
Well worth the cost. Played the white tees and ran through some fairways. But, in general, I liked the layout. The course was in good shape. Staff was great.
Perfect conditions
The course is in great shape. Greens rolled true. Fairways large and lush. Pace of play was slow. Kind of a boring layout with most holes looking the same. Lost interest about half way through
Everything was first rate
As always, the course and staff at Hilton head national were fantastic. Course has a great layout. Definitely challenging, but not soul-crushingly difficult. Course conditions from tee to green were very good, especially considering the recent drought in this area. Staff is very friendly and very professional. Course rangers kept close tabs on pace of play. All carts have GPS. If you can get a $50 rate, it's really a great deal IMHO.
Favorite in the Hilton Head Area
This great course is a long time favorite. Conditions are always great and greens exceptionally nice and consistent. The on cart range finder GPS system is a nice bonus. You won't go wrong at Hilton Head National.
Hilton Head National
Always in excellent condition and the staff are always very cordial. Makes the day a very pleasant experience
A nice layout
First time playing this course on HH vacation, nice layout, challenging but fair, great condition. Golf cart navigation system really nice, was accurate on distances, lets you touch the screen to see where various landing areas are off the tee, shows the layout of each hole etc. Really good experience. Back nine quite a bit tougher than front.
