Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

Poor Customer Service - They can't tell time
Great Course but staff was clueless on the day we played:
1) No mention when we checked in that the range was open but hitting from the back, there was no one at the carts or anywhere to be found, we eventually figured it out.
2) As we are hitting a few balls on the range we are told we need to go to hole #9 (yes hole #9) immediately, but after some discussion he had our tee-time wrong.
3) After 1 hour 50 minutes we are finishing hole #17 (nine holes played) and told by ranger we are playing too slow and need to pick up our pace. We finished the 18 hole round in 3 hrs, 35 min.
Very nice shape for 110 degree weather
The greens were exceptional and the fairways and rough were just as nice. For such hot weather and just plugging the greens the course was in great shape. Well worth the money.
The Perfect Place
Spend the extra money to play this course in the summer time. What an amazing track! We played the "Cattail" 18 and the layout is great. The par 3's have great variety, as do the 4's and 5's. This course does not disappoint!
beautifull
first time playing here and i will be back!
played as a single most of the day, but joined a few guys at the end of one round.
finished the cattail course in just under 3 hours, so i decided to play devils claw too.
both courses were in great condition. greens rolled exceptionally well even though they must have been punched not too long ago.
during my 2nd 18 i ran into a couple slower groups and the course ranger came over to me and asked if i would like to jump up to number 10.
heck ya! he escorted me to #10 and i cruised thru the back nine. then he met me at 18 and escorted me back out to the front and told me they had gotten a little busier. no problem.
he jumped me in front of a 5some and away i went.
ALL the staff were top notch. the ranger made me feel like a VIP and i had a great time.
both courses were great and offered various yardages and really nice par 3's.
i will be back very soon!!!
Beautiful, well manicured course.
Thoroughly enjoyed playing this course. It was very challenging but fun. The course is beautiful and in excellent condition. It's a troon course. Would definitely recommend the course and will play it again.
Great course ..Great Day
Super course and warm up facilities. Great condition...I think it's one of the top courses in Phoenix..if you get a chance to play either Whirlwind course you should take it!
Beautiful course; a must play
This was the first course we played on our annual golf trip and it set the bar for the rest. You can always spot a Troon run facility - classy, well-run, immaculate conditioning, and a beautiful golf course. Even in May, we were amazed at how lush and green the course was. Couldn't find a brown spot on the course. The layout is great with a lot of memorable holes. It's a fair golf course and is a nice break from the desert, target-golf layouts in Arizona. Definitely a must play and for $60, it offers great value. We'll be back next year.
Won't be disappointed
Played the Cattail course, which I had not played in over a decade. It's a better course than I remembered, with a good mix of strong, long holes as well as some shorter risk-reward option holes. There's nothing here terribly unique in the way of golf course architecture, but there are plenty of good holes.
Conditions were good, not quite 5 stars because the course was very wet in some areas. I hit a 9 degree driver, my drives should not plug when they land in the fairway, but that happened several times. Also, I was only in one green side bunker, but it was quite low on sand and very compacted. But most of the course had at least some bounce to it and the greens were nice and smooth and ran at a good, not too quick, pace.
Staff is excellent and the facility is beautiful and well kept. Hard to think anyone would be disappointed playing golf here.
Never disappoints
They are a bit pricey at times, however never disappointed with the experience here
Confusing
Course is confusing to navigate. Can't stop for a pit stop and a snack after 9. Bev cart food is marginal. Eat before you play or bring your own food. Condition is great course plays well and is challenging and fun.
Great course and good value.
We now include Whirlwind as part of our golf itinerary on each trip to Phoenix. It is always in great shape, the courses are fair but challenging and the lounge serves great food. We always enjoy our times there.
Whirlwind Cattail Was Great
Wide lush fairways, few hazards and excellent greens made the golf experience exceptional. Unfortunately, the price was much too high (typical of winter gold in AZ).
Don't golf here St. Patricks Day
Other then the massive St. Patties day concert nearby at Rawhide, which was super loud and annoying, the course is great. That is my first time hearing noise at this course as I usually play it because its a NO HOUSE desert course which is usually peaceful. I play here a lot and this was my first bad experience, but not the courses fault. Also at the clubhouse where they don't allow E-cigs on the patio. Seriously? I vape apples and strawberries who is going to complain about that? I won't be hanging out in the club house drinking and eating after golf now since their policy on e-cigs has changed. Also the last 2 times I ate at the club house the food was just average. But the staff is 5 star. The course and staff at Whirlwind are great though. I've played Cattail so many times and last week I finally got to play DevilsClaw. And wow, what a difference. Cattail is so much harder. Far more challenging shots and hard bunker placements and water on Cattail. Overall Whirlwind is one of my favorite courses and the indian reservation does not have summer water restrictions so the greens are always perfect, even in the summer! Always coyotes on the course and even rattlesnakes, some wildlife entertainment. The practice facilities here are 5 star as well. Whirlwind is the nicest course in Chandler that I'm aware of.
enjoyable, we'll maintained and challenging
Beautiful course designed throughout the desert. Great fairways and exceptional greens. Food at the club house was also very well done and delicious
Player friendly
Course is in pristine condition. Challenging but yet extremely playable with plenty of yardage options from multiple tee boxes. A must play course if in the area
Great layout for all level players
First time on the Cattails course, will play it again when back in Phoenix area! The course was a good layout, great condition, and very friendly starter. The greens were really smooth, fast, rolled true and was equal to any I played on while visiting AZ. Must play and easy access off I-10
Can't go wrong with Troon
Another Troon course in impeccable shape! This course is a great layout with generous fairways and decent size greens. Not real difficult, but extremely fun to play. Staff was super friendly too!
