Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

beautiful course
Great condition greens immaculate peaceful serene play it you will enjoy it
3.75944 star
nice tournament style layout. I like devils claw better. MOSQUITOES ARE A BIG PROBLEM! the mosquitoes, after a few holes on cattail, ruined my experience. maybe they're not so bad on devils claw? check with the pro shop and hopefully you'll get an honest answer! never had bugs this bad in Arizona! didn't think this was an issue in the desert!
Cattail is a Must Play
Considering our stormy weather or the past few weeks, and the fact the course lost a great number of trees, this is a must play course. Conditions were excellent, though the Mosquitos on the front 9 were brutal (something Arizonians) aren't too familiar. Note, take bug spray until it dries out. Beautiful golf course, very well maintained, with excellent pace of play, rangers, and refreshment cart seen frequently. Great experience. Thanks Troon golf.
Cattail Sep 1
Course was in good condition although the mosquitoes were out in force. Give the staff a thumbs up for providing repellent to help with the annoyance.
Still in good shape
Whirlwind is still in good condition even in August in Phoenix. It was very hot but the pace of play was brisk. The greens rolled true but obviously not as quick as they do during the winter. The staff is always accommodating and the fee is commensurate with many lower quality courses. Its a really good value.
Hot Day-Hot Deal
Afternoon teetime on a record temperature day...114 at Sky Harbor. Icewater about every three holes on the course and the beverage cart came around four times during our round. The greens were punched about four weeks ago,,,punches are still visible but did not affect true roll, medium speed. No soggy wet areas; some turf replacement in process did not affect play.
Fairways are firm but not burntout, offer some roll, greens are receptive. Great summer value!
Bermuda is harsh this year
Let me start by stating that the Whirlwind courses are of top notch design and provide an excellent challenge. Unfortunately, this year the groundskeeping staff had some trouble getting their summer grass to come in, so much of their fairways appear extremely bald or damaged. The greens are just fine and they roll very true. May have to wait for the overseed this fall for the course to get back to its full potential
Rough shape!
Not Happy with the condition of the tee boxes, several areas of the fairway and around the greens. And they want to charge $60. Dont think so!
We wish to apologize for your experience on the golf course. Our crews are working hard this summer to correct some of the negative effects that occurred from heavy rainfall before overseeding last fall. Please contact me directly if you wish to discuss your experience or your issues with the pricing. Thanks for taking the time to write the review.
no course alert
this is a troon golf course and the fairway had a lot of brown dry up grass it need to heel up .greens where in pretty good shape and tee boxs where ok.i got a good deal on golf now I glad I didn't pay 135.00 like there asking it no worth it .if you play for cheep and don't mind the dry up grass play it if not stay away.
issues with fairways
Golf shop "Pro" need some attitude adjustment. Golf course conditions NOT good. Fairways need a lot of attention. Greens were not cut the day I played.

July Golf
Always enjoy playing Whirlwind. Some browned fairways...but in great shape during a hot summer.
We appreciate your comments and ratings as well as your understanding about some of the spots on the fairway. We're bound to have a year here and there where the transition isn't as smooth as it normally is. This is that year for us. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Cattail one of the best around
An excellent course with some tricky greens and well placed bunkers.
Glad you enjoyed your round on Cattail! It was built for professional golfers and is a great test of skill! Tee box choice is important here as the course can be enjoyable when played at the proper distance. Thanks for your review an kind comments. We hope to see you again soon!
Never played a Troon managed Course in this poor Shape
I haven't played this course in two years so I thought I would forego my Sunday round at my course. Bad choice for me. Even though I shot 75 ( too my suprise), I wondered what the score would have been on good fairways and greens. The fairway are in poor shape, the starter charged it to the change in grass, but they had more dead spots and hard patches then I've ever seen on this course. I would suggest staying away from this course, at lease for the rest of the summer, there too many good courses out their to play. You shouldn't have to suffer through playing on dirt.
Great round! Perhaps you would have scored even better if the fairways conditions were better. We apologize for the difficult transition this year. You said it best...the course conditions are not up to par with our standard and we are working very hard to get both golf courses back to where they always are. We hope to see you again soon. Thank you for taking the time to write a review for us.
Great deal
One of the best deals on golf now. Course is in really good condition .pace of play was awesome up to the 9th hole. Slowed down but still finished under 4hours. Definitely will play again
Thanks for taking the time to write a review. This is more meaningful than you know. We hope to see you again soon!
Just what you expect from a Troon golf course
Conditions at Whirlwind are always above average to excellent. The course has a solid layout that will test you quite completely. Greens were a little slower than normal this time (10 instead of 12). As always, they hold well and putt smooth. One of my personal favorites in the valley!!
Great Course
Played on a Sunday and got a great rate on Golf Now. As usual course was immaculate. All staff was professional, courteous, and friendly. Have never had a bad experience at Whirlwind.
Glad that you had a great time on the golf course! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Good value for money on Golf Now
The course was in great shape for Phoenix in the summer. Staff very friendly. Good value for money if you can get a HOT-Deal, Golf Now T-time.
Course is in good shape and well worth playing. Hit fairways
I enjoy playing Whirlwind. It's always in good shape.
Great course and practice facilities.
Played the Cattail Course and it was in fantastic shape. The practice facilities are awesome so get there early to take advantage.
Thank you for your review. We truly appreciate you taking the time. We have had some difficulty with some areas of the fairways this summer due to the much hotter temps we experienced in June. The conditions are also the result of damage done to the bermuda grass layer at the end of last summer, when we saw an unprecedented nine inches of rain in September. The winter grass overseeding covered a lot of that damage, but this summer as the winter grass transitioned out, the damage to our bermuda layer manifested itself. We are working very hard to bring those areas of the golf course up to our standard and it is getting better everyday! We hope to see you soon here at the club for another chance when conditions are better!
