Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

Fair course, but very slow play
This is one of two courses. One was closed due to overseeding and this one was in the prep phase with scratching of fairways. Greens were 'slow' compared to many bermuda greens. Waited essentially every shot. While we saw some marshals, it is was not apparent they did anything to keep up the pace of play.
Battled mosquitos the whole round
Whirlwind is typically one of my favorite courses. However, because of recent rain, the mosquitos were absolutely relentless. Apparently, the course has done nothing to counteract them.
Will avoid playing there for a month or two.
Misquitos infected
Loved the greens rolls true. But once you get on the back 9 look out there is a lot of standing water out there that breaded thousands of mosquitos. I was bite around 50 times and had bug spray on.
Great track and great staff
My partner and I thoroughly loved Whirlwind Cattail. Greens were fast and fare. Excellent design with numerous options in each hole. It makes you think and rewards good shots.
Bring Mosquito Repellant!
Awesome course, but rough is TOO TALL.Due to recent rains mosquitos are everywhere.
MOSQUITOS!!!!
Pack plenty of bug spray. The mosquitos were out in full force here. Overall the course is in good condition. The greens were very receptive with the recent rain.
Very hot and humid day.
Course was in good shape. Weather was very hot. Pace of play was great.
Very Nice!!
Excellent overall conditions. Greens were also great for mid-summer. Good course, nice challenge but a fair test.
Cattail
Played Cattail, really nice course, only thing keeping it at 4 stars was the lack of plants along some of the fairways, looked as if they were in the process of changing the landscaping. Nice layout and no houses!
Beautiful Course
The course was in great shape versus a lot of other courses I have played in the area this time of year. The greens were very fast and pin placement made putting challenging. It was my first time here but will not be the last. I highly recommed this course. Bring some extra balls because if you get out in the desert the think brush and bushes make it difficult to find them.
Catail
Course in very good shape.....cost was very good...staff and service were very good.
Devils Claw
with the exception of the 4some behind us that kept teeing off as we were hitting our second shot the course was great. Good thing they weren't long ball hitters or very accurate.
Excellent Course
1st time playing the Cattail and it was even more challenging than the Devils Claw. Course was green and in great shape, balls held the greens which where quick and true, while the fairways were well maintained. Great resort golf club all the way around!!
fun day
joined a nice threesome for a fun round. course is in excellent condition and slow pace was on us. Staff was preparing a tournament, but all were friendly and helpful. I will go back
Great course and great value
Whirlwind is a great course and the conditions are the best. Everyone treats you great at the course and the facility is one of the best we found in Az
Whirlwind golf
Course was in excellent shape and the staff was great
its no devil
Played both the Cattail and Devil's Claw...both in excellent shape with challenging green complexes. Devils Claw was easiest...They should loose the intimidating name...A staff member Mark suggested they should change both courses names to Cat Claw and Devil's Tail...
Excellent
Very windy the day we played but worth every penny. Course was in excellent shape will be back again.
Great condition
The fairways and greens were in excellent condition. One of the best courses in phoenix.
Great Day
The Cattail course is a little more of a challenge than Devil's Claw. Neither course goes by the Clubhouse between nines. The beverage cart today didn't have much selection and it took a long time for the staff person to return with sandwiches (5 holes later). Having a well stocked cart at the bathroom station would be an idea.
