Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,222 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

Valentine day
On a busy Saturday, we. Played 18 holes on beautifully conditioned cattail course in just over 4 hours. The staff was very accommodating and the weather was perfect.
Whirlwind
The course was in top condition. Some of the best greens in the PHX area. Price was a little higher than its competitors.
Solid track, worth the money
Course was in nice shape, greens were very true. Would difinately play it again.
Great round of golf
Myself and 3 friends from out of state played here on Monday the 12th and the course did not disappoint. The course was in great shape and the greens were excellent. My buddies loved the course and would definitely play it again. Although being an AZ resident, I was surprised the rate was $90 plus tax on a Monday morning. But that's the AZ golf resorts sticking it to the locals as usual. I only played there because I had 3 out of towners and I knew a Troon course would be in good shape. Back to the practice range.

Good & Bad
Excellent course.. maintained in great condition..worth playing. Was a very slow twosome in front of our foursome and the Ranger showed no interest in helping. Cart person took food order but didn't deliver food for 5 holes. Lastly Golf Now rate was no better than the course rate.
Top-notch facility
LExcellent service, excellent staff, great course conditions. What else could you ask for! The greens were fast and true. The fairways are generous and lush. The course had its challenges and risk reward holes. If your get the opportunity play Whirlwind!
Very Nice
The cost included cart, green fees, and all the balls one wanted to hit on the range prior.
The course was spectacular and scenic. The range was very nice, with high-quality balls to hit. My understanding is that the greens are rolled and were fast, which was awesome. The balls rolled very true. Well worth the money to play.
Great Course
Another great Troon course in fantastic condition. Plenty of room on the fairways for my slice when needed. Just the right level of difficulty. Nice practice facility and staff is awesome!
Worth the drive
After many trips to Phoenix for golf we played this on a recommendation and weren't disappointed. Only downside was that it was carrots only due to overseeing. Would have rated food higher but there is no food at the turn when playing cat tail. Other than that it was a great round. Course reminded U.S. a lot of TPC Stadium but at a fraction of the cost. We'll be back.
just fun, good golf
As with other Troon courses, they take good care of you and the course was in great shape---generous fairways, tough pin placements and true greens. The staff makes it easy to have a good time and the open range facilities make it easy to play well.
Whirlwind
This is a beautiful course. Played it on a cloudy day. Course was empty. Was allowed to go out early. By time I reached first green I realized I wasn't there just to golf. I was meal of the day for the mosquitoes. I saw OFF Spray as I left the clubhouse area, but was not warned of the infestation once on the course. It wasn't until about the 9th hole that I saw the beer cart attendant. Luckily she carried off. Lifesaver. Play resumed and things were great. Eventually though even the OFF Spray did not keep them away. Other than that I'd play here everyday if I could. Course is challenging and well kept.
Fair course, but very slow play
This is one of two courses. One was closed due to overseeding and this one was in the prep phase with scratching of fairways. Greens were 'slow' compared to many bermuda greens. Waited essentially every shot. While we saw some marshals, it is was not apparent they did anything to keep up the pace of play.
Battled mosquitos the whole round
Whirlwind is typically one of my favorite courses. However, because of recent rain, the mosquitos were absolutely relentless. Apparently, the course has done nothing to counteract them.
Will avoid playing there for a month or two.
Misquitos infected
Loved the greens rolls true. But once you get on the back 9 look out there is a lot of standing water out there that breaded thousands of mosquitos. I was bite around 50 times and had bug spray on.
Great track and great staff
My partner and I thoroughly loved Whirlwind Cattail. Greens were fast and fare. Excellent design with numerous options in each hole. It makes you think and rewards good shots.
Bring Mosquito Repellant!
Awesome course, but rough is TOO TALL.Due to recent rains mosquitos are everywhere.
MOSQUITOS!!!!
Pack plenty of bug spray. The mosquitos were out in full force here. Overall the course is in good condition. The greens were very receptive with the recent rain.
Very hot and humid day.
Course was in good shape. Weather was very hot. Pace of play was great.
Thank you for your review. We are glad that you enjoyed your time at Whirlwind and we hope to see you again soon!
