Whirlwind Golf Club - The Devil's Claw Course
About
Devil's Claw is one of two golf courses at Whirlwind G.C., part of the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler. In addition to its views of four mountain ranges -- South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains, the San Tan Mountains and the Superstitions -- Devil's Claw overflows with Native American culture.
A round on the Devil's Claw at Whirlwind Golf Club begins on Greasy Mountain, a par-4 424-yarder that faces Muh-wah Ha-dahk - the Gila River Indian Community's name for South Mountain. Things get long on the fifth, Maricopa Journey, a par-5 593-yarder designed to memorialize the travels of the Pee-Posh (or Maricopa tribe) from the Colorado River to where the Gila and Salt rivers meet. Go home via Going Home, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 442 yards from the Black tees. As the Gila River Indian Community sings it, "Our songs are ending as you go your separate ways, take along with you the good songs that were sung here today, as within your hearts."
Don't go straight home: You can still fit in another song after golfing the Devil's Claw golf course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in the clubhouse, which features a fully stocked bar and plenty of plasma televisions for relaxing and catching up on other sports.

Calgary Golfer Devil's Claw
Front 9 windy and threatening rain and chilly. Nice on back 9.
Played from tips 7100 yds.
Good practice facilities.
No GPS on cart. Get free yardage book.
Great grass conditions. Arguably best in Phoenix. Would play here again.
Pace of play slow 5 hours only thing bad. Thankfully, it was nice enough day.
Would recommend you give it a try. Drop your wife/kids at the Premium Oulet Mall or Casino and then you go golf. Convenient.
Great Day-
Ended up being the first group off - played in 3:40
Fairway and Greens are in prime shape-couldn't have asked for a more enjoyable weekday round
Great Desert Course
Played this for the first time ever thanks to a generous gift from a friend. First off, it is a first-rate facility - the staff was courteous, knowledgeable, hard working, and very welcoming. They provide you with course books diagramming every hole and the yardage, along with a few complimentary items such as tees, cups, towels, etc.
There are two courses at Whirlwind - The Devil's Claw and Cattail - and we played The Devil's Claw. It is a very pristine and well-maintained desert course. The fairways were crisp and had some punch to it, allowing your ball to get a few extra yards off the bounce. However, it is much better to be accurate rather than powerful because if you mishit your shot, it's going to get lost in the desert shrubbery that lines every hole. The bunkers are also deep and taken care of and there are plenty of them along the way, making your shot and club selection ever so critical.
The only bad thing I would say is that a few of the greens were lacking a bit of maintenance especially on the outside of them. Other than that, the course was in fantastic shape. A true desert golfing experience.
Would definitely recommend this course to friends and family.
Gorgeous course!
We loved playing Devil's Claw! The course was in perfect condition and the pace of play was perfect! The Pro Shop was very nice, too. The Par 5's from the ladies tees are very long. Had a great day and would return again!
No need to tuck the pins here.
All the fluff for those that like service. I pay for the course and this was a gem. Many shots you just have to step up and execute. No place to bail. Greens were good speed and VERY true. Most of the time you are just trying to avoid the many traps. If you do, a birdie can be had.
Resort golf
. This was a typical resort course.. Very manicured and well kept. Not a difficult layout but very enjoyable to play.
Good, greens look fragile...
greens on the devils claw are not at 100 pourcent. Reste of the course is very good
Fair course
If you're hitting the ball decent you can score pretty good on the course. We played Devils Claw and there was no wind. I'm an average golfer and the course wasn't overbearing. Nice time.
Great Place to Play - Desert Golf without getting beat up
My wife and I played on a cloudy, slightly cool day. We didn't even see anyone in front of us until the 13th hole - so we were cruising along and ended up finishing in 3:15.
Course was in excellent shape but the greens are really tough to read - lots of little, subtle breaks. Not too tough for a 16 handicap from the middle GRAY tees, but it would be a BEAR from the tips. Just enough desert to be fun without feeling beat up. Only a couple forced carries.
Good design!
Like the golf course but the green over seed is very thin!
Great course is the South Valley
I've been in AZ three years and this is definitively in the the top 5 courses I've played in the Valley. We played Devil's Claw and will look to play here again- both courses. The fairways and greens were in great condition, good variation of course layout, and with very nice surroundings as well. Very pleased with the food and views from the clubhouse tom wrap up a great outing.
WOW!
This was my first time on a Troon course and I'm impressed. I'll play again in a heartbeat.
Devil's Claw
Course had some thin spots of grass on fairways and some greens. Otherwise course was fun to play.
GREAT DAY ON LINKS
COURSE WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE GREENS. THEY WERE A LITTLE THIN ON GRASS IN SOME PLACES. SPEED WAS GOOD.
WILL BE BACK!!!!
I'll be back
Always love this course and this time was no exception The weather was a little dicey at first but the sun was soon out and the course was in great condition, Played with my brother and 91 year old father who still hits it 200 yds, We all had a great day here.
Great Course, Poor Tee Time Management
On a Friday morning at about 10am, a friend and I decided to golf later that day. We checked golfnow and there was an available tee time at 1245 at the Whirlwind Devil's Claw golf course. We booked the tee time and drove to the course. When we arrived we were informed by the starter there had been a frost delay that morning and all tee times were pushed back an hour. This was disappointing because we had booked the tee time earlier that morning and the course was fully aware of the delay but allowed us to book the tee time anyway without any warning of the frost delay when we booked. We talked with the pro shop and were told the delay was really only about 45 minute and that we should have no problem finishing before dark. We decided to play. We ended up starting about an hour after the original tee time. On a bright note, the course was in excellent condition and the cart girl was very friendly. Unfortunately the pace of play was very slow and we did not finish before dark. I understand frost delays happen this time of year but am very disappointed there was no communication when we booked the tee time and that there was an obvious miscommunication between the pro shop and the starter. I really do like this course but will have to play only when I have nothing else to do that day...
Not at Full Price...
I did not see the value for the cost. Considering the course was cart path only and going through over-seeding; i would have thought after spending time on the course that they would have offered more incentives to play. The course was overvalued.
