Whirlwind Golf Club - The Devil's Claw Course
About
Devil's Claw is one of two golf courses at Whirlwind G.C., part of the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler. In addition to its views of four mountain ranges -- South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains, the San Tan Mountains and the Superstitions -- Devil's Claw overflows with Native American culture.
A round on the Devil's Claw at Whirlwind Golf Club begins on Greasy Mountain, a par-4 424-yarder that faces Muh-wah Ha-dahk - the Gila River Indian Community's name for South Mountain. Things get long on the fifth, Maricopa Journey, a par-5 593-yarder designed to memorialize the travels of the Pee-Posh (or Maricopa tribe) from the Colorado River to where the Gila and Salt rivers meet. Go home via Going Home, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 442 yards from the Black tees. As the Gila River Indian Community sings it, "Our songs are ending as you go your separate ways, take along with you the good songs that were sung here today, as within your hearts."
Don't go straight home: You can still fit in another song after golfing the Devil's Claw golf course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in the clubhouse, which features a fully stocked bar and plenty of plasma televisions for relaxing and catching up on other sports.

GREAT DAY ON LINKS
COURSE WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE GREENS. THEY WERE A LITTLE THIN ON GRASS IN SOME PLACES. SPEED WAS GOOD.
WILL BE BACK!!!!
I'll be back
Always love this course and this time was no exception The weather was a little dicey at first but the sun was soon out and the course was in great condition, Played with my brother and 91 year old father who still hits it 200 yds, We all had a great day here.
Great Course, Poor Tee Time Management
On a Friday morning at about 10am, a friend and I decided to golf later that day. We checked golfnow and there was an available tee time at 1245 at the Whirlwind Devil's Claw golf course. We booked the tee time and drove to the course. When we arrived we were informed by the starter there had been a frost delay that morning and all tee times were pushed back an hour. This was disappointing because we had booked the tee time earlier that morning and the course was fully aware of the delay but allowed us to book the tee time anyway without any warning of the frost delay when we booked. We talked with the pro shop and were told the delay was really only about 45 minute and that we should have no problem finishing before dark. We decided to play. We ended up starting about an hour after the original tee time. On a bright note, the course was in excellent condition and the cart girl was very friendly. Unfortunately the pace of play was very slow and we did not finish before dark. I understand frost delays happen this time of year but am very disappointed there was no communication when we booked the tee time and that there was an obvious miscommunication between the pro shop and the starter. I really do like this course but will have to play only when I have nothing else to do that day...
Not at Full Price...
I did not see the value for the cost. Considering the course was cart path only and going through over-seeding; i would have thought after spending time on the course that they would have offered more incentives to play. The course was overvalued.
Beautiful Course
Pace was terrible as there was a tournament that we were not aware of until getting there. We did not get to finish last three holes. No one was around when we got back to let them know. The tournament people were loud and obnoxious and there was no marshall out to witness that. We waited on every hole!!!!! Otherwise lovely course.
pace of play is slow
As usual, when post overseeding the pace of play is tedious due to the cart path only rules..they are entirely to far from greens to begin with, 50-60 yds....but course was on the way to its usual good shape.
Squitos notwithstanding....fun course
Course was in good shape and I enjoyed the layout. Mosquitos were terrible as sun disappeared. Will play again!
Thank you for taking the time you review! Glad you enjoyed the golf course. We apologize for the mosquitos...we too are glad for colder temperatures that will bring a welcome relief from this issue. Record rainfall at the end of summer led to an increase in mosquitos this year. We invite you to join us again now that this issue is much improved!
Great Track
Course was very good for the time of year. Greens were very hairy and slow, as expected. It played as cart path only was the only downside but we were aware of that prior to starting.
OASIS IN THE DESERT
Odd to find such a nice course in the middle of a field in the desert. The holes were very well kept. We did actually have to do cart path only because the course had just been overseeded but it was in great shape compared to the other courses in the area. I would definitely go to this challenging course again. We were only a twosome but the were finished the course in under 4 hours. I believe that the reason was the fact that they had a course marshall that came around the whole time we were there to check and make sure play was proceeding how we wished it. Staff was amazingly friendly and could not do enough for us visitors from Alberta.
Great Value , Solid track
Course is cart path only due to reseeding . The greens are a little on the slow side but in very good shape. The rough is up which makes hitting fairways important . The only down side is the flies and mosquitoes ; they were terrible. Pace of play was good . Value is excellent. Play the back tees if you are a 6 or below.
Always a good time.
Every time I have played this course it has been in beautiful shape. Tee boxes are perfect, fairways are green and lush, and the rough can be challenging if your balls settles. Bunkers are filled with soft sand. The greens roll true and will stick with some good wedge play. Their practice facility is excellent as well. Highly recommend.
Awesome
Course is in wonderful condition. Played Silver tees @ 6400 yrds so many of par 4's do play long (13 hndicap), but that's offset by generous fairways. Plan to go back ASAP.
GREENS ARE AWESOME
Best Bermuda greens in the valley. Some browned out area in fairways and collars, but the traps and greens are excellent. A must play. Beverage service was plentiful and lots of good drinking water on the course.
Right combo of difficult and interesting
This course is fun and forgiving and in good shape considering the time of year. The greens roll true and the only slight knock on the conditioning would be the tee boxes. I would definitely suggest checking it out if you haven't played here yet.
warm out but excellent course
Even though we played when it was very warm, monsoon season, this course and staff was excellent . Very lush fairways and excellent greens.
Good value
Course was in very good shape for the middle of summer in Phoenix. Tees, fairways, and greens all in nice shape. Staff was friendly and marshals checked in on our group a couple times with chilled towels. Played from the tips so the course was a good challenge.
whirlwind golf
We will play there again. Great course!
The course was in great condition.
Enjoyable Round
Course and greens in particular we're in great shape. Bunkers were also well manicured and very playable. Only knock is $60 price tag in the summer.
Kelordan, thank you for your comments and your review. We regret the pace of play issue that you experienced. It is something that we work on continually as our popularity increases. Whirlwind does value your time and we understand the impact that pace of play has on your overall experience. We are glad that you enjoyed the golf course and hope you come back soon to play a more enjoyable round.
