Whirlwind Golf Club - The Devil's Claw Course
About
Devil's Claw is one of two golf courses at Whirlwind G.C., part of the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler. In addition to its views of four mountain ranges -- South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains, the San Tan Mountains and the Superstitions -- Devil's Claw overflows with Native American culture.
A round on the Devil's Claw at Whirlwind Golf Club begins on Greasy Mountain, a par-4 424-yarder that faces Muh-wah Ha-dahk - the Gila River Indian Community's name for South Mountain. Things get long on the fifth, Maricopa Journey, a par-5 593-yarder designed to memorialize the travels of the Pee-Posh (or Maricopa tribe) from the Colorado River to where the Gila and Salt rivers meet. Go home via Going Home, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 442 yards from the Black tees. As the Gila River Indian Community sings it, "Our songs are ending as you go your separate ways, take along with you the good songs that were sung here today, as within your hearts."
Don't go straight home: You can still fit in another song after golfing the Devil's Claw golf course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in the clubhouse, which features a fully stocked bar and plenty of plasma televisions for relaxing and catching up on other sports.

Par 3, #7 - Beautiful! Photo submitted by u000002627226 on 06/02/2020
Beautiful Course
Pace was terrible as there was a tournament that we were not aware of until getting there. We did not get to finish last three holes. No one was around when we got back to let them know. The tournament people were loud and obnoxious and there was no marshall out to witness that. We waited on every hole!!!!! Otherwise lovely course.
pace of play is slow
As usual, when post overseeding the pace of play is tedious due to the cart path only rules..they are entirely to far from greens to begin with, 50-60 yds....but course was on the way to its usual good shape.
Squitos notwithstanding....fun course
Course was in good shape and I enjoyed the layout. Mosquitos were terrible as sun disappeared. Will play again!
Thank you for taking the time you review! Glad you enjoyed the golf course. We apologize for the mosquitos...we too are glad for colder temperatures that will bring a welcome relief from this issue. Record rainfall at the end of summer led to an increase in mosquitos this year. We invite you to join us again now that this issue is much improved!
Great Track
Course was very good for the time of year. Greens were very hairy and slow, as expected. It played as cart path only was the only downside but we were aware of that prior to starting.
OASIS IN THE DESERT
Odd to find such a nice course in the middle of a field in the desert. The holes were very well kept. We did actually have to do cart path only because the course had just been overseeded but it was in great shape compared to the other courses in the area. I would definitely go to this challenging course again. We were only a twosome but the were finished the course in under 4 hours. I believe that the reason was the fact that they had a course marshall that came around the whole time we were there to check and make sure play was proceeding how we wished it. Staff was amazingly friendly and could not do enough for us visitors from Alberta.
Great Value , Solid track
Course is cart path only due to reseeding . The greens are a little on the slow side but in very good shape. The rough is up which makes hitting fairways important . The only down side is the flies and mosquitoes ; they were terrible. Pace of play was good . Value is excellent. Play the back tees if you are a 6 or below.
Always a good time.
Every time I have played this course it has been in beautiful shape. Tee boxes are perfect, fairways are green and lush, and the rough can be challenging if your balls settles. Bunkers are filled with soft sand. The greens roll true and will stick with some good wedge play. Their practice facility is excellent as well. Highly recommend.
Awesome
Course is in wonderful condition. Played Silver tees @ 6400 yrds so many of par 4's do play long (13 hndicap), but that's offset by generous fairways. Plan to go back ASAP.
GREENS ARE AWESOME
Best Bermuda greens in the valley. Some browned out area in fairways and collars, but the traps and greens are excellent. A must play. Beverage service was plentiful and lots of good drinking water on the course.
Right combo of difficult and interesting
This course is fun and forgiving and in good shape considering the time of year. The greens roll true and the only slight knock on the conditioning would be the tee boxes. I would definitely suggest checking it out if you haven't played here yet.
warm out but excellent course
Even though we played when it was very warm, monsoon season, this course and staff was excellent . Very lush fairways and excellent greens.
Good value
Course was in very good shape for the middle of summer in Phoenix. Tees, fairways, and greens all in nice shape. Staff was friendly and marshals checked in on our group a couple times with chilled towels. Played from the tips so the course was a good challenge.
whirlwind golf
We will play there again. Great course!
The course was in great condition.
Enjoyable Round
Course and greens in particular we're in great shape. Bunkers were also well manicured and very playable. Only knock is $60 price tag in the summer.
Weird Rules at Troon facilities
Learned that if you book a tee time on Golfnow from a Troon facility and it includes range balls, it is for before the round, not after. There are times I want to hit some balls after my round to work on something, but not if you book a tee time on Golfnow. Didn't leave a good taste for one of the courses I really enjoy playing.
Very nice course great value
Had a great time playing Devils Claw that we are going back this week to play Cattail!
Even in the 110 heat, Cat Tail stays in great shape!!
This course is a personal favorite of mine. it presents a number of very well thought out challenges to the player from tee to green. It is a tough but fair test of golf. Troon golf is always a guarantee of impeccable playing conditions.
Very generous fairways and greens
Enjoyed the course mostly because I was playing with my 91 year old friend! It was a very hot day between 105 and 110; but you had plenty of water on the course and a full ice chest; so we were able to keep hydrated and cool by drinking and wetting small towels to keep on our necks. The fairways were great for iron play with almost perfect height grass; but the course seem to play a lot up hill and the grass didn't allow for too much run out; so was using a lot middle and long irons in on most of the par 4's. The greens had been recently punched but had little effect on the roll of the ball; which was a good thing since I needed to make a lot of lag puts etc. I'm very glad that I chose to play the gold tees and not the tips as my drives although hit well were constantly 20 to 30 yards shorter than usual even having to hit a couple of 3 woods in on a couple to the longer par 4's. I carry a 7.6 index playing a 130 slope on my home track and lucked out with some super chips in tight and a couple of birdies to shoot a 2 over total score. I would like to see your fairways just a little faster; but probably wouldn't want to trade their very iron friendly height.
Course has lords of variety
Excellent course conditions and super friendly helpful staff.
Fantastic!
What a day. Tough course but worth it. Get yourself a T time on golfnow.com. Fantastic conditions and club house. Enjoy!
