Whirlwind Golf Club - The Devil's Claw Course
About
Devil's Claw is one of two golf courses at Whirlwind G.C., part of the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler. In addition to its views of four mountain ranges -- South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains, the San Tan Mountains and the Superstitions -- Devil's Claw overflows with Native American culture.
A round on the Devil's Claw at Whirlwind Golf Club begins on Greasy Mountain, a par-4 424-yarder that faces Muh-wah Ha-dahk - the Gila River Indian Community's name for South Mountain. Things get long on the fifth, Maricopa Journey, a par-5 593-yarder designed to memorialize the travels of the Pee-Posh (or Maricopa tribe) from the Colorado River to where the Gila and Salt rivers meet. Go home via Going Home, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 442 yards from the Black tees. As the Gila River Indian Community sings it, "Our songs are ending as you go your separate ways, take along with you the good songs that were sung here today, as within your hearts."
Don't go straight home: You can still fit in another song after golfing the Devil's Claw golf course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in the clubhouse, which features a fully stocked bar and plenty of plasma televisions for relaxing and catching up on other sports.

Par 3, #7 - Beautiful! Photo submitted by u000002627226 on 06/02/2020
it is a 4.5 star to me....Love the courses
The Cat Tail course is in my opinion, the more challenging of the 2 courses at Whirlwind. As always, you just can't go wrong playing on a Troon golf course. Conditions are always top notch. The overall set of amenities is very good. Their range and practice area are very nice. The only thing that keeps this from being a 5 star course is that there are no views.
Excellent shape for this time of year!! Perfect fairways great greens!
I played cattail today at 7 am. Whirlwind has always been one of my favorite courses around chandler. But man for $40 dollars the course played amazing. Can't say enough how impressed I was in the care of the course for late august. Played Ocotillo on Sunday and unfortunately the greens were a little shaky. But the greens today at Whirlwind were far superior green fresh and quick at time. Good job to maintenance! Always love this course great layout.
True Greens great fairways
I played Cattail for the 3rd time and the course is in great shape as usual. This is the best kept course for summer time in PHX I have seen yet. Fairways were lush with thick grass and the greens were fast and true, I'm impressed. Ranger kept pace of play going checking ppl. My only complaint is the bag handlers were lazy. Even after I tipped them $5 as I always do, 4 of them sat around talking to each while I had to make 2 trips to my car to carry my golf bag, umbrella, water still, ice chest etc.. the ignored me to socialize with each other. Next time it will be a $2 tip. The stater James did a good job though. The groundskeepers shut off their engines anytime we were about to hit....kudos to them and for keeping the course in great shape. I've been playing We Ko Pa a lot lately but I'll be playing more at Whirlwind now through summer as I'm impressed with the greens being so nice during summer. It's just to bad Troon doesn't offer a better discount card or I would play their courses more often. All in all a great golf experience and I can't wait to try Devils Claw.
course is fun to play
fairways and greens in great shape. Played in a 2some with 2some in front and we never had to wait. Course is wide enough to absorb a few incorrect hits but challenging enough to make the day very interesting.
One of the better courses
The fact that Whirlwind stays busy in the summer says a lot about this course. The course is well taken care of. From the tees to the fairways, rough, bunkers and greens, every detail is as it should be. Then there is the Troon touch, special amenities like a complimentary yardage guide that sets this club apart from so many other Phoenix area courses.
Whirlwind is located just south of the Phoenix/Chandler border. There are no stunning mountain views but there are lots of undulating fairways and greens amidst the desert flora and fauna. Yet it is not a completely desert style course; there are wide fairways and very few desert carries.
It seems more challenging than the slope rating would indicate, but that might just be my game. In any case, I will likely be back for another enjoyable golf outing at Whirlwind.
Another Excellent Troon Golf course.
The CatTail has a little more of a links feel to it than it's sister course, The Devils Claw. They are both great all around choices for golf. Since it is run by Troon, it is going to have everything you would expect from a top notch course.
Great value
This public course is the best maintained in the Phoenix area....challenging, scenic and fun to play!
Beautiful, quiet with south mountain and the Estrelle mountains as the back drop
I really enjoy playing this course. The staff are friendly and helpful. The course is always in great shape and the pace of play is great. It's a gem with South mountain and the Estrelle mountains as the backdrop.
Refreshing to see a well maintained course
After playing a few other courses in the south valley that made me think it was impossible to grow grass in Arizona, this was a nice reminder of Troon golf. Great course layout that put my 6 cap to the test, some pretty holes to look at, and fairways and greens that had grass and were fun to play. I guess it make a difference if you are spending 20 vs 35 dollars. If you are a player, spend the extra money and play here. On hole 16 the marshal came out with bottled water for us as someone ahead told them the water on the course had run out. That is great service. Will play again.
excellent layout and conditions
In the interest of full disclosure I only played nine holes but I think this is one of the best courses I have played in the valley. The course conditions were absolutely excellent. The course is one that can be played different ways in that if you use your head you can score well - provided you can also execute your shots. I cant wait to play this gem again.
Bring your friends
Very playable fun course, good championship challenge. Bring your friends here rather than the north Scotsdale courses. They will play at a better pace, lose less golf balls and have an overall better golf experience. Paying a little less is also a bonus. Facillities are all excellent from practice to food and beverage.
Very well maintained, but........
Played Devil's Claw and really enjoyed the layout and the conditions of the course were fantastic for late June. The fairways were green and plush (like carpet). Greens were in good shape, few ball marks, if any. Not a target golf course like most in the desert, but can play as challenging from the tips (for low handicappers). Pace of play was excellent. Never waited at any tee box, and got done in about 4 hours. The only reason it did not get 5 stars is because IT WAS 120 DEGREES the day we played and they had no cold towels. The ranger said they did not have them ready yet. Are you kidding me!
Course was nice, but overall experience was not.
Pretty course, but we had issues with people is front of us and attitude of staff.
awesome
Everything about this course is excellent. Great service, great conditions, and a challenging/fun course.
Marvelous course at a fair price
This course was in wonderful condition with hole after hole of lush pretty as a picture views. The greens rolled beautifully, the sand traps were dramatic but fair and each hole called out for a photograph. We have been coming to Phoenix for a June golf vacation for the last 8 years and have played more than 30 of the upscale public courses. This one was so good that we immediately put it on our schedule for next year.
I'd Play Here Anytime
Great time to play here with affordable prices through the summer. Played Cattail last week and it was in pristine condition. Right amount of bunkers with a perfect amount of fairway width. Good overall and very fair test of golf.
Staff is friendly and facilities are great. I have played here three different times this year and experience was always great.
A wonderful place top play...
Played this course on Father's day and it was just great. Fairways and greens are in great shape and the views are spectacular. It was a VERY hot day and the play was a bit slow but I didn't mind because of the views and the people i was playing with. This course is worth the trip from pretty much anywhere here in Phoenix. I will be playing this course again and again. Did I mention the actually have 2 18 hole courses so more fun in store for me...
Great course!
Great course from practice range to greens. Fairways were a little hard in spots but not uncommon for this time of year. Only negative was there were some ground under repair around a couple of the greens. Get there early to take advantage of the practice facilities.
Very nice casino course.
The staff on the course was very good, they quickly loaded my clubs and pointed me towards the practice facility. The driving range was nicely spaced out with perfect pyramids of golf balls ready to be hit. The two large putting greens were also nice to get a feel for the greens before the round.
The course itself was in very good condition. I played the Devil's claw over a year ago and i remember the second cut of rough being 2 inches tall and having to chop my ball back onto the fairway from one of my many errant drives. The rough on the CatTail was much shorter and didn't pose much of a problem. The greens were soft and rolled very true on this day. the fairway and green side bunkers were full of sand and were consistent throughout the day.
The only problem that I encountered was there was a 2some of beginner golfers in front of us that played from the championship tees. The ranger spoke with them several times on the front 9, but that did little to speed them up. 4.5 hours for 2 people is just way too long, especially when there is a 4some pushing you on every hole.
