Whirlwind Golf Club - The Devil's Claw Course
About
Devil's Claw is one of two golf courses at Whirlwind G.C., part of the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler. In addition to its views of four mountain ranges -- South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains, the San Tan Mountains and the Superstitions -- Devil's Claw overflows with Native American culture.
A round on the Devil's Claw at Whirlwind Golf Club begins on Greasy Mountain, a par-4 424-yarder that faces Muh-wah Ha-dahk - the Gila River Indian Community's name for South Mountain. Things get long on the fifth, Maricopa Journey, a par-5 593-yarder designed to memorialize the travels of the Pee-Posh (or Maricopa tribe) from the Colorado River to where the Gila and Salt rivers meet. Go home via Going Home, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 442 yards from the Black tees. As the Gila River Indian Community sings it, "Our songs are ending as you go your separate ways, take along with you the good songs that were sung here today, as within your hearts."
Don't go straight home: You can still fit in another song after golfing the Devil's Claw golf course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in the clubhouse, which features a fully stocked bar and plenty of plasma televisions for relaxing and catching up on other sports.

Par 3, #7 - Beautiful! Photo submitted by u000002627226 on 06/02/2020
Tough day on the course but a wonderful day overall
Playing back tee when A-game is not showing up increased the difficulty level of the course. The wash areas have been visited more often than anticipated.
Professional staff from bag drop to 18th hole has made the day an almost perfect day. Course conditions were great and scenery is a lus compared to oher golf courses.
Thanks for a great day.
Can't miss
Great courses. Challenging and fair. Course was in excellent condition and the greens read true.
Nice Experience
Devils Claw at whirlwind offers a challenging round of golf in a beautiful desert setting. The fairways were in great shape and the surrounding desert often leaves one with a playable lie. The greens were firm and true despite small marks left by golfers apparently too lazy to fix their ball marks. The surrounding mountains offer a beautiful backdrop.
Just don't expect anything quicker than a four hour round during the busy winter months.
great course
my only negative comment was that the marshall asked us to pick up our pace of play after 4 holes. we had no one behind or in front of us. We were a 3 some and when he warned us we were on pace for a 3 hour round. 2 holes later we caught a foursome and so we finished in four hours. Other than that only positive things to say...its pricey but worth it. We played ASU Karsten and TPC Champions and this was easily a better course than either.
Great course
Great course. Excellent conditions and staff. Will play again.
Great Desert Course
Played Devils Claw course at Whirlwind.
Troon course with impeccable greens and great fairways set within the desert. Lots of wildlife viewings (Coyote crossed the fairway twice).
Generous fairways - if you slice into the desert ball will be gone most of the time.
Really enjoyed the round.
Top notch facility
Whirlwind is a Class A golf experience. Course and practice facility in great shape. Pace of play was just over four hours but given the difficulty of the course (especially the undulating greens and green side bunkering) was understandable. Cart service disappeared by 2:00 which given that days temperature was surprising. Devils Claw has a variety of tees to suit long and short hitters
Great day great course
First time playing this track and was very impressed. Course was in immaculate shape and pace of play was good for how busy it was. Highly recommend this course to all.
Great course
First time I played this course. Great shape. Greens, bunkers and water holes make the course fair but challenging. Best of all no houses. Staff was very friendly. Pace of play was good considering we had a 1:00 P.M t-time. Could use more parking space but that's a minor fault. Would definitely play there again.
Great condition...not very challenging
Played the Cattail course. The course is in great shape, the greens roll true and I would say were medium in speed. My only complaint is that the front nine was really short in distance (played the gold tees) and all but a few holes were straight forward. There isn't much trouble on the course, wide fairways, not a lot of traps, trees were all small and even the desert was pretty forgiving.
It is definitely a resort course but for the money and all the great reviews it gets I would have to say it's a pedestrian golf course. Not much of a WOW factor.
As advertised. I would play it again for $69
Not sure if I would pay the $100+ rates they charge as I would much rather play Southern Dunes but this was good. Good shape...some challenging holes and some that would be nice to play again as I went in blind.
The greens were nice. The course was wet.
Well,I was hoping that it would be as good as Southern Dunes. No way. The Resort play really tears up the course and they seem to not be able to fix divots. I guess they have the attitude that they paid there $ 140. The course was a little wet even at the end of the day. It was fun to play. The $60, I paid was worth it.
Enjoyable round
Only problem was that the ladies tees were almost the same as the men's. On several holes the women's distance was very challenging even though there were tee locations that could have been used to make it better for the women
Fantastic course
Played devils claw. Hole 9 has split fairway! Very cool. Staff was very nice and helpful. Greens rolled true. Course was in fantastic shape as are all troon courses.
Great layout
Great practise facilities. I played devils claw and the greens were in much better shape then cattails which is the other course here. They were faster and more receptive. Overall tHe course was in good condition. Lots of grass clippings left on the fairway. A little annoying. Staff was a little preoccupied with a tournament that was arriving around the same time so ended up going back to bag drop to get my own clubs and loading into a cart
Awesome course (Devil's Claw). Best course we played in Phoenix area.
Fabulous facillity. Course was in great shape for so early in the season.
nice track but poorly marshalled.
There was a tournament but that is no excuse for allowing a 5+ hour round. At one point there was three foursome waiting on a tee!! Called the clubhouse to point this out and they were dismissive. We finished the 18th in the dark. Other groups behind us, who also presumably also paid full fees and not twilight rates, could not finish.
long course and pristine grass
I played Devils Claw and really liked this course. Its really long at over 7000 yards. Grass was perfect on all tee boxes, fairways, and greens. The course was challenging on some holes. Most fairways are super wide and easy to land in unless you really shank it. I will play again and going to try and play Cattali next time I make it to Whirlwind. The starter was super cool and the pro shop guys seem to be all business and not to talkative. The guy who cleaned my clubs did a horrible job, I think they were cleaner before he touched them. lol
