A tale of 2 nines
The course had been closed for 2 days because of all the recent rain , so for it to be open was great. Well done greens staff! It was of course a little boggy in places but the hilliness helped with drainage.
Pro shop was closed ( on a Sunday????) but the lady in the clubhouse was very friendly and helpful.
The front nine felt more parkland and the back nine heathland. It’s a fairly tough test, especially when there’s not much roll through the damp fairways!
Be prepared for the elevation changes especially hole 12. Some of the views at the top of the course are great. I can only imagine how beautiful the course looks in spring and summer.
I would come back in Summer.
South Moor sadly not currently at it's best
Not the best experience - course is currently in need of some general maintenance attention over the winter period - we encountered some greenside areas that should be marked GUR / repaired, some temporary tee boxes and oddly heavy sand in some bunkers which impaired playability. However, the most pressing work that needs carrying out urgently to make the course more playable is trimming back some of the trees - the 16th in particular is very frustrating - our group all got good drives off but every one of us was stymied by overgrown trees blocking the second shot at the dog leg which is very frustrating and didn't make us feel much like playing the course again any time soon which is a shame.
Sandy greens spoiled it.
Nice course and layout. The greens had just been completely covered in sand and this made it pretty impossible to putt properly. If I knew this at point of booking, I’d have booked somewhere else. £30 a man to have greens like that isn’t good unfortunately.
Very enjoyable
Was really looking forward to playing here and so glad l did really enjoyed a good game on a challenging course every hole different , made very welcome on arrival by staff and golf members
South Moor
Very enjoyable, no complaints.
Very challenging course
Great course
Great course set in along the sloping hills. Some very challenging holes, but overall a good round of golf. Tee boxes, fairways and greens all in excellent condition.
Excellent but tough course
Great round here, recommend to any golfer of mid-low handicap, high handicap’s may struggle due to course difficulty.
Everyone should play here at least once
Challenging in the wind and rain
The course conditions are significantly affected by the weather. A strong or gusting wind makes an already challenging course very tricky.
Despite drainage having been improved in recent years, heavy rain does pool on some fairways.
South Moor - well worth a try
A challenging course due to the topography, made more challenging by the jeopardy for going off line.
A well-looked after course with decent off-course facilities - practice range (free of charge), large chipping/bunker practice area and green.
Lovely Course
Lovely course, Great layout and Challenging. Some of the holes are pretty steep as the course is on the side of a hill so you will need a buggy if this is an issue. On the other hand the elevation changes in the hole sets up some great looking holes. Course is in great condition especially given the dry weather this summer. You could end up paying more for a lesser quality course in my opinion. Would definitely recommend!
Nice hidden coarse
My only disappointment was when we arrived the pro shop was shut and no one in the club house , so asked a member if that had a score card we could use , also we would have stopped after for a meal and drink , but nothing going on , never played a course that the pro shop is shut , strange , could have just turned up a played for free .
Back to normal
After my review of yesterday's round I'm pleased to say that today's round took me 2hrs 30mins👏
Torture
I play this course loads and recommend it to everyone, but unfortunately today I turned up 30mins prior to my tee off and viewed 24 County players waiting to tee off. I asked the pro if my tee off time would be affected, he said no but play will be very slow. Avarage 15-20 minutes waiting time on every hole, 4hrs 30mins to complete and I was playing by myself. Players behind me said that they were told that there was a glitch in the booking system that should have prevented bookings until later. Plenty players behind me only played 7 holes due to waiting times. Hopefully this is a one off, great for the club to host the event, but unfortunate for myself and other players on the day, hopefully quieter tomorrow as already pre booked to play the next day🤞🏌️
excellent greens, shame on the rest
A really good day for it. On getting into the tight car park and set ready to go, I wasn't aware of a range that was on site. There wasn't a clear signage on where to go to register, the shop was closed and there was nothing setup on putting green or range giving direction or feel it was open. The course had people finishing the morning rounds but there was little to invite you in.
course was very quiet and full or 1 or 2 ballers in the afternoon which meant a fast pace was able to take play.
tee boxes are well labelled for each hole but need some TLC as they are in bad repair. The fairways, if you can call them that, are well mowed fields. There is little to no signage on the holes which you face blind most of the time, its a hit and hope to find your ball if you dont make the fairway. Its unforgiving off the fair way too. No second cut or fringe and you're into the rough sponge like moss, need a good eye.
There was one excellent thing of South Moor, the greens, wow. They were really well kept and fast, green and marble like speeds to putt on. Seriously the best part of the day.
If you like hill climbing then this is for you, nearly 6 miles of up and down, tests you on hot day like we had.
As for appropriate course attire, we saw no less than 3 people wearing tracksuits and there were teenagers running across the course aroudnthe 17-18th holes.
It was a difficult round for sure, i dont think i'll be back soon however.
