The Queen's Course, one of three championship layouts at the Gleneagles Resort in Perth and Kinross, is one of the great golf courses that play less than 6,000 yards. Its short length can be deceiving, however, especially on the front nine. Meanwhile, the back nine has some shorter holes, like the 15th, a drivable 252-yard par 4. But deep and intimidating bunkers await errant drives.
The Arnold Palmer-designed Prospector Course at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash. challenges with tricky greens, and ponds that induce havoc on four holes. The dynamite 340-yard fifth hole tempts some visitors into trying to carry the full length of a wetland. The par-3 sixth hugs its opposite side. Another pond fronts the 412-yard, par-4 ninth hole and 540-yard, par-5 closing hole. And don't forget no. 10, which boasts an elevated tee and vistas that extend for miles into the Wenatchee Washington National Forest.

Muirfield, the treasured links that anchors Scotland's Golf Coast, will host the Open Championship for the 16th time in July. The 7,209-yard course has been lengthened by roughly 158 yards since the 2002 Open, which was won by Ernie Els. Widely regarded as the fairest of the nine courses in the rota, the mostly flat fairways don't punish good shots with bad bounces like some links.
Bye holes" -- an extra par 3 traditionally built at the end of an 18-hole routing -- are a great bonus perk. They help settle bets and give golfers one more shot at an ace. Here are some of North America's best.

His commitment to excellent conditions and fast greens has re-energized this Jersey Shore favorite.
The 7,047-yard Love Course remains arguably the most popular of the four premier designs at the Barefoot Resort & Golf that opened simultaneously in 2000. It's cheaper than playing the Dye Course and prettier than the Norman Course. The Fazio Course might be its equal -- or even a shade better -- but the Davis Love III design counters with some interesting nuances and maximum playability.
They don't call Gray Rocks resort's La Bete Course "the beast" for nothing. The 6,825-yard Graham Cooke design, located in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, strikes fear into players with its mountainous challenges. La Bete, which opened in 2001, gives Gray Rocks Golf a 1-2 punch (along with La Belle "the beauty") in this premier vacation destination approximately 75 miles northwest of Montreal.

The Bay Course at Seaview Resort in Galloway Township is the home course of the ShopRite LPGA Classic and is probably the better known of the two golf courses at the resort. The Donald Ross design, which dates to 1914, has undergone several renovations. While the course isn't right on the ocean, it is on the bay across from Atlantic City. You get a good view of the city from the second green of the no. 1 handicap hole, a 434-yard par 4 that usually plays into the wind.
The Black Course at Bethpage State Park has a championship pedigree like no other municipal golf course in the country. Sheer length, bold bunkering and burly rough challenge anybody lucky enough to nab a tee time.
