Destroyer at Seal Beach Navy Golf Course
About
The Navy Golf Course Seal Beach is a 27-hole facility that includes the championship Destroyer Course and the nine-hole executive Cruiser Course. The 6,780-yard Destroyer Course presents a challenge even for low handicappers with a slew of hazards coming into play throughout. The small greens have challenging slopes ranging from subtle breaks to dramatic drop-offs. To make them even tougher, you'll find strategically placed bunkers lurking along the edges. The tricky doglegs, which are mostly par 4s, will force you to think carefully about your club selection, and to top it all off, water makes an appearance on almost every hole. It's a long golf course that feels even longer due to the rolling terrain, but it is more forgiving than it seems with long, wide fairways that won't penalize you for being slightly errant.

The 9th Hole with pond and Destroyer model Photo submitted by AirFed on 06/15/2013
I wasn't told that the driving range and putting was going to be closed so we couldn't warm up.
Other then that we had a good round..
Work in progress
They are fixing something with the lake in front of the 12th green so the lake is dry and they are playing the hole with a temp green and it’s playing about 250 yards. The lake left of the landing area on 13 is also dry. Aside from that, the course was nice and green, better than normal grass coverage this year (been playing here since the late 90’s) and the greens were holding and rolling well, although a touch slower than normal for Navy. Well worth the $32 I paid for the round with a cart, great value there.
slow round
I played there on June 10, last Sunday. There were four some playing in front of our group. Starting from 4th hole, they divided into two group of two some, and made our group waiting every hole until 13th hole when I finally spotted a marshal and complained the situation. And the group behind us kept on hitting drivers while we were still in the fair way. I played there many times, but this time it was terrible experience. It was first time I played there in the afternoon and I will never do it again.
Slow Play Can Ruin A Round of Golf
Sorry to say this round was brutal! Backed up two groups at every hole! This is the first time I’ve had this happen here. I don’t know if the marshals weren’t doing their jobs or if there were just a couple of inconsiderate groups. Probably the later. The cruiser course is a better fit for beginners.
Extremely slow round.
The course is in pretty good shape, but outside of that, it wasn't a great experience. The pace of play was terrible (teed of at 130pm and finished at 7pm). We saw one Marshall and he was sitting in the shade watching the par 3 over water (not saying a word). There were a few groups in front of us keeping everybody back. This is a common complaint here and it will never change. Someone will respond and say, "hey, thanks, we'll work on it", but it won't happen. The snack shack closed early afternoon on a Friday, so there was no food or anything along the way. Also, no beer/snack carts at all. Didn't see a single one. So, I won't be back... Too bad. Interesting layout and the course is in good shape, but I can't spend that long out there...
Let's Hear It For The Marshall
My favorite course by far and I have posted before about the course and staff. No matter what my game I always leave wondering how long before I can get back again..
So let's talk about the Marshall. Every been out with an over aggressive marshal who is telling you to pick up play when there is no one in front or behind you for 10 minutes plus. Yea what the heck. Ever have a group in front of you practicing with multiple balls, holding up four groups behind or hitting up on you and laughing in a drunken state? Wonder where the Marshall? Yip me too.
So at the 1st Tee there were two open time slots because of no shows before the foursome in from of me took off. About 20 minutes behind the group ahead. We take off 10 minutes later as a twosome then another twosome takes off behind us. Things are going smooth when the Marshall comes out to the 9th hole and is super friendly. He asks if the group in front of us is moving at an OK pace? Yes they were. He comments how he noticed a large gap between them and the group ahead of them. I told him that there was a 20 minute break in front of them. He thanked me and just wanted to make sure we were not being held up. Then he says hey there are lots of groups coming up behind you, would you mind if the twosome behind you join up with you for the back nine? We tell him sure and we had them catch up with us at the 10th. He thanked us and off he goes. We finished our round with four of us and the couple husband and wife who joined us were awesome. We never caught up with the group in front of us again and never seen anyone behind us. How about that a Marshall that does his job, asks and does not demand and has the best interest of all the players in mind including opening up the course for groups behind who are starting to bunch up. Try to find that at other golf courses.
Three Cheers for you Marshall! I can wait to return..
Fun little course
Played this course for my first time just before noon on Tuesday 5/29.
The price is very average to most courses in the area but as far I’m concerned this is definitely in the top 3 or so in my 15 mile radius . The course is fairly flat, but they have enough doglegs on every hole that it keeps you very engaged in shot decision. There are plenty of holes that you can bomb a driver off the tee but that isn’t always the best club choice , which leads to options off the tee. I like that.
The course conditions were definitely better than most . The tee boxes were all good, fairways were great, rough was great and greens were in great shape. I wish they were a bit faster but with the undulations you don’t have too many straight putts so it was fine. The greens aren’t all flat like other courses so pin positions can be exciting, rather than boring flat putts on every hole. The wind definitely picks up here but all in all I really enjoyed the course. For the price I would definitely play here monthly .
Nice but vey Slow! Cheap price leads to over-crowding
Great price for a nice public course. But the cheap price leads to a full schedule of 4-somes lead to a 2:45 front nine, on a weekday afternoon. If your #1 concern is cost and you have a lot of patience, this is a great value. For me, the very slow play destroys my rhythm.
Good Stuff
Consistently well maintained for what is essentially a municipal course. Marshall kept everyone at a good pace.
My favorite course in my area.
The staff is always super nice and the course layout is really inviting. There are some good risk reward holes that will challenge any level of player.. The pace of play is most always fast. Our foursome finished in 4 hrs and 15 min. We will keep coming back. Golf now is how I book my rounds.
Marshall’s don’t enforce anything
Played on a Tuesday afternoon and there was a group bouncing around to whatever hole was open. We were waiting on 9 behind a group and the bouncing group comes in and cuts in front of the group we are waiting behind. Marshall comes up behind them and let’s the group bully them into being on the tee. We ask the Marshall why he is letting them cut in and he says the group tells him they were there but left to go see if there were openings on other holes, which was a lie. The Marshall then says there is nothing he can do because he doesn’t speak Korean. We call the pro shop to let them know and he looks up the cart gps and tells the Marshall to kick them off. Marshall goes up and talks to them and the group keeps playing. Worst on course management I have ever seen. A joke to everyone who pays to play this course.
GLAD I DID.
Great value!
I've seen courses that cost 4x as much, in way worse condition. I was stoked that they had a grass driving range.
The course seemed a bit long for me, playing from the blues and whites. Also there was no starter or Marshall helping with the pace of play.
Navy
Great Course - GPS provided on carts. Greens very nicely kept but it is a difficult course.
