Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort

About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Golf in the dessert Photo submitted by lyla on 11/03/2012
Course is in awesome condition. Staff are all very friendly and keep things moving at a good pace. When in town...this is always an enjoyable round.
Best windy course I've played
I absolutely love Sun Mountain at the Paiute Resort. It truly is an oasis in the middle of the desert; but not too far from the strip. The fairways and greens are in amazing condition and the entire course is really very beautiful. I played in the afternoon, so it was really windy (about 20 mph with gusts reaching 30-35 mph). Next time I go, I'll pay the premium to get a morning tee-time. Highly recommend this course.
Good, But Not Great
I had been led to believe that this was an oasis in a desert, and while it was a nice course, it was not to die for. The cost was a steal since getting reasonable greens fees when you are not a local is hard, but I wondered if the savings were worth it on my 30 minute drive back to the Strip. As far as the course goes, there did not seem to be a great deal of variety on the course. The Par 3s all felt similar, and the other holes all blended together as well. The people I played with indicated that all three courses have a different feel to them, but from what I saw, the 54 holes all looked similar.
Great time
I have played all three courses now. Not sure what one is my favorite. I always appreciate the work the grounds crew does to keep the courses in top tier conditions.
I will continue to play here when visiting.
Pristine in every sense of the word
A golf enthusiasts must visit this place. Three courses to play, pristine conditions throughout the course, excellent clubhouse and pro shop, and the their food is delicious.
Highly recommend. I always try to go out to Paiute anytime I am in Vegas and it never disappoints. My favorite place to play, hands down.
Nice Course
Always a pleasure to play any one of the three courses. They are always in immaculate condition and Staff is very accommodating and friendly. They greet you with a sincere appreciation of you coming to the course. Very impressive is how accomodating to Disable Handicap military Veterans. By far my most favorite course in Vegas.
Nice Course
Very nice track. Great scenery and friendly staff. By far one of the most accomotating courses in Vegas for Disable Veterans. Always a pleasure to play and one of the three courses.
June Golf at Paiute-Sun Mountain (first time)
Truly a remarkable golf course. The views are amazing and the course is immaculate. It was 100 degrees in Vegas and the course was as green/as soft as it could be. Staff was friendly and accommodating plus the Pro shop was full of great stuff.
I would absolutely recommend the Sun mountain course at Paiute to anyone looking for amazing golf and an escape from the bustling Las Vegas strip. Playing at Paiute really did feel like being in another planet after a long weekend on the strip.
Perfect fairways year round with amazing layout
All three courses at Paiute are some of the best golf in Vegas. However, Sun Mountain is my personal favorite by far. It’s challenging, but not overly so for a 15 handicap golfer like myself. The railroad tie bunkers are a lot of fun, and speaking of bunkers the sand is always soft and well kept unlike a lot of similarly priced courses in the city. The fairways, greens, and all of the grass is going to be some of the best, if not the best, in Vegas since they are on their own wells and can keep the course properly maintained. That alone makes it my favorite place to golf here. The layout on Sun mountain is a lot of fun with some good dog legs, blind shots, and mostly easy fairways to hit. If you haven’t played this course yet, you’re letting yourself down. Don’t wait, play it now and you’ll be wanting to play it again.
Worth the drive
Great range and practice facilities. Course condition is fantastic. Play Smart, keep driver in the bag when you can.
Top notch. Would play again
Played here and had a great time. Course was immaculate and in great shape.
