At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Tough conditions
Amazing course, just wish the weathermen would have been right, supposed to be 59-62° with 5mph winds. It was low 40's with 20+ mph winds, we weren't dressed for those conditions so it made for a challenging round. But the Hot Chocolate with Baileys helped from the quick shack!
Love the Paiute!
Course was mint at always. Everyone was friendly and provided excellent service, from bag drop, check in, starter and drink cart! Played the Sun course. See you next time!
Worth the nonresident rate?
Course was excellent and worth the money. Bothered paying twice the same as residents, for a privately owned course, but guess that’s the Vegas deal.
I’ll be back
Loved the course and I can’t wait to see the others. Incredible scenery, but next time I’d bring a “rock club” for those errant shots that wind up in the raw desert.

First class facility! Staff were friendly, the course was in impeccable condition. Worth the money
Nice Layout
Enjoyed the day…course was in great shape. Quick greens. Played as a foursome within the mandated time but could have played faster if we hadn’t waited on the group ahead. Seemed like a long round because we waited on every shot. Staff was friendly and helpful.
If you have not played Paiute...you ate missing out on 3 great courses
Played Sun last week. Was in great shape. Clubhouse is great for lunch or after round drinks. All 3 courses at Paiute are fantastic and worth the short drive from the strip. Keep the ball in play and you can score (i did not this round).
Worth the drive
Course was in excellent shape even while many other LV courses are suffering with late summer conditions. Greens were fast and in great shape. Fun layout.
Best Public course In Las Vegas
Always great playing any of the 3 courses here. Course is always in great shape. Secret is out.. Getting very busy. Very Challenging course so, please if your a high handicapper play bad fast...
A "Must Play" while visiting Las Vegas
Everything about this golf course was top notch from the Bag Drop folks to the end of the round. Highly recommend. I will be back. 👍🏽
