Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Picturesque number five is a great–though quite intimidating–driving hole. A cluster of five bunkers guards the right side, which is the shorter route to the green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

The par-4 sixth hole, ranking as the #1 index, tops out at 426 yards. While not a terrifying hole, it demands four good shots for a par. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

he serpentine fairway at eleven, the course’s second-longest par-5, wriggles uphill past six strategically-placed bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Dye reveled in the creation of optical illusions: at the 219-yard 14th, it is hard to tell (even from this more elevated view than the tee’s) that the two larger bunkers rest some 45 yards short of the green, not next to it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Fifteen is about as clever as a short par-4 gets. A split fairway, separated by three large bunkers, allows for strategic play from tee to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Perfect fairways year round with amazing layout
All three courses at Paiute are some of the best golf in Vegas. However, Sun Mountain is my personal favorite by far. It’s challenging, but not overly so for a 15 handicap golfer like myself. The railroad tie bunkers are a lot of fun, and speaking of bunkers the sand is always soft and well kept unlike a lot of similarly priced courses in the city. The fairways, greens, and all of the grass is going to be some of the best, if not the best, in Vegas since they are on their own wells and can keep the course properly maintained. That alone makes it my favorite place to golf here. The layout on Sun mountain is a lot of fun with some good dog legs, blind shots, and mostly easy fairways to hit. If you haven’t played this course yet, you’re letting yourself down. Don’t wait, play it now and you’ll be wanting to play it again.
Worth the drive
Great range and practice facilities. Course condition is fantastic. Play Smart, keep driver in the bag when you can.
Top notch. Would play again
Played here and had a great time. Course was immaculate and in great shape.
Always Windy
We payed this course once before. It was windy then but nothing like this second time. There are no houses or anything around this place to knock down the wind. There were white caps on the little lakes and the wind was blowing so hard the water was going over the banks. When it started to rain we finally decided to quit after only eight holes. After waiting in line to finally talk to the guys at the counter, they told us we could try and wait it out. After waiting 45 minutes we went back up to try and get a rain check because winds were still above 30 mph. They don’t offer any kind of rain checks because this happens all the time. STAY AWAY!!!
Always windy
We have played this course 3 times now and every time time it has been windy. No houses and nothing around to block the wind. This time was extremely bad. A winter storm came in and we could only play 8 holes. Sustainable winds over 40 miles an hour (1 lady at the 9th said it was 48, not sure how she knew) that lasted for over an hour with rain off and on. Guys at counter said we could wait it out after the hour was up and we couldn’t or we would miss our flt, so we asked for a 9 hole rain check. This happens all the time so they don’t give rain checks. STAY AWAY!!
Slow pace of play.
A beautiful golf course to play the only glitch was slow play by a foursome who held up four groups. When we gave up because of dinner reservations. We drove rest of the course to clubhouse and there was four holes with no one on them. What a shame we missed out on finishing our round. It would have been five hours or more if we played it out. We started at 1130 and quit at 330 with 5 holes left to play.
Paiute
I have been playing Paiute for 11 years and it seems course is now wildly overcrowded. The starter had myself and my partner wait on another twosome to join us well after our tee time. When they still were not present, we hit our T-shots, which were about 100 yards from the green, we drove the cart to the fairway, and he started waving us back in which was wildly unorthodox. Drove back in only to find that the other twosome still wasn’t ready,, so we continued our round and was wildly overcrowded pace used to never be a problem here. Would not recommend anymore.
Fabulous course
We had a great time in this fabulous course, very good maintenance from Tee boxes to greens, plus the distinctive desert and Mountain view, I took a lot of pictures.
Course length from black Tee is over 7000yds, green speed was about 11-12, it’s a bit challenging but a lot of fun. Pace was good we finished in 4 hours right before sunset.
Staffs were very friendly, food was delicious with reasonable price.
Hope to come back again sometime soon and try all courses.
