Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort

About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Golf in the dessert Photo submitted by lyla on 11/03/2012
Beautiful but insanely windy
Had to cut it after 9 holes. I’m all about roughing it out but it had to be 25mph+ winds. When I played here in January it wasn’t as windy. Beautiful course but check the weather report before booking. If you’re on the strip and it’s 10mph there, it’ll be double or more out there.
Great Time Playing the Wolf and Sun Courses
Played two of the three courses at Paiute - Wolf, followed by Sun. The courses are remote so if you want to play two rounds in a day, you probably want to book two rounds there. I think they offer some multi round specials. My buddy booked the morning round as part of a Las Vegas Stay and Play Package. I booked the second round as a Hot Deal on Golf Now. Clubhouse, Pro Shop and Restaurant were nice. Staff were very friendly. Courses are challenging and fun. I will play here again on my next trip. here.
Good course but minor club house flaws
If you like good fairways and greens and understand lateral play for desert rocks this course was a good time. Disappointed in the club house as they had no towels, soap, and only had one shower bay. Club house said they would have these amenities but fell a little short. Pace of play was rushed as they schedule our four some with two groups of 2 behind us. Not a bad day besides these little things that are aggravating.
Robbie
Course was in great shape. Nice layout three courses. The greens were fantastic. Be careful of the wind here. It can kick up out of nowhere. Gust got up to 50 mph and sent everyone running to the clubhouse for cover.
Great course
Great design and maintained very well. Wide forgiving fairways but very fast greens. Loved the course.
dessert golf
upon driving to the course it doesn't look like there's any life there, but wow the courses there are beautiful with magnificent views and great golf. the staff is very friendly and accommodating..I would play this place again
We found a secret Vegas gem
We were all surprised to see this resort only 30 min from our downtown hotel. After playing one day we canceled our other tee times to go back and play a different course at this resort. Will play this place again. Well worth the money and the staff pushes this place to the top of our list.
Usually windy
This was my 3rd time at Paiute, and it is a nice set up. However each time it has been windy so maybe the location is prone to this.
This time was extreme and many players cut their round short and were leaving with excessive winds, so strong that they were blowing the ball off the greens along with anything loose on the golf cart.
Its a nice facility but beware of the winds.
Great course
As a lady golfer this course was fantastic since they thought about bathrooms and the availability on the course. The greens and fairways were well maintained. The beverage cart was seen about every four holes. Would definitely play this course again.
