Rating 73.4

At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.

Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.

Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.

Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.

Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Nice course.

Very busy and a bit pricy. Good course condition. Winds in the afternoon -- makes things a bit challenging.

Golf with friends in Vegas

We had a foursome of ladies and a foursome of men. Ladies went first and both foursomes finished in 4 hrs. We played the Sun Mountain course and it was in excellent condition. The greens were rolling very true. We had an awesome lunch before a great round of golf! I will always go back to Paiute

Great Course for the money

Great course, awesome layout and challenging at the same time. Piece of plate was absolutely amazing on a Wednesday. Would definitely recommend as one of the best public courses outside of Vegas. This is a hidden gem we played the sun course.

Best Public Course in Vegas

Fantastic scenery, challenging course. Tee boxes are well taken care of. Fairways green, clean, managed with care. Greens well placed. Cart girl came around 4 times during our round. Clubhouse is open and large. Pro shop is very well stocked. Definitely the best public course in Vegas. Granted locals get a discount but well worth it for tourists. About 20 minutes north of the strip. Played in 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Beautiful but insanely windy

Had to cut it after 9 holes. I’m all about roughing it out but it had to be 25mph+ winds. When I played here in January it wasn’t as windy. Beautiful course but check the weather report before booking. If you’re on the strip and it’s 10mph there, it’ll be double or more out there.

Great Time Playing the Wolf and Sun Courses

Played two of the three courses at Paiute - Wolf, followed by Sun. The courses are remote so if you want to play two rounds in a day, you probably want to book two rounds there. I think they offer some multi round specials. My buddy booked the morning round as part of a Las Vegas Stay and Play Package. I booked the second round as a Hot Deal on Golf Now. Clubhouse, Pro Shop and Restaurant were nice. Staff were very friendly. Courses are challenging and fun. I will play here again on my next trip. here.

Good course but minor club house flaws

If you like good fairways and greens and understand lateral play for desert rocks this course was a good time. Disappointed in the club house as they had no towels, soap, and only had one shower bay. Club house said they would have these amenities but fell a little short. Pace of play was rushed as they schedule our four some with two groups of 2 behind us. Not a bad day besides these little things that are aggravating.

Robbie

Course was in great shape. Nice layout three courses. The greens were fantastic. Be careful of the wind here. It can kick up out of nowhere. Gust got up to 50 mph and sent everyone running to the clubhouse for cover.
