Devil's Claw is one of two golf courses at Whirlwind G.C., part of the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler. In addition to its views of four mountain ranges -- South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains, the San Tan Mountains and the Superstitions -- Devil's Claw overflows with Native American culture.

A round on the Devil's Claw at Whirlwind Golf Club begins on Greasy Mountain, a par-4 424-yarder that faces Muh-wah Ha-dahk - the Gila River Indian Community's name for South Mountain. Things get long on the fifth, Maricopa Journey, a par-5 593-yarder designed to memorialize the travels of the Pee-Posh (or Maricopa tribe) from the Colorado River to where the Gila and Salt rivers meet. Go home via Going Home, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 442 yards from the Black tees. As the Gila River Indian Community sings it, "Our songs are ending as you go your separate ways, take along with you the good songs that were sung here today, as within your hearts."

Don't go straight home: You can still fit in another song after golfing the Devil's Claw golf course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in the clubhouse, which features a fully stocked bar and plenty of plasma televisions for relaxing and catching up on other sports.

Devil's Claw

Relatively low slope rating so the course may not challenge scratch golfers. But, for average players, this is a great place to play.

Whirlwind - Worth the Drive

I have played the Whirlwind Cattail course twice previously, and this was my first time playing the Devil's Claw. What a treat. This course is among my Top Ten favorites in the Phoenix area. The course was in fabulous condition, with the fairways green and lush, and the greens beautifully manicured. They rolled quick, but smooth. The bunkers feature fine grain sand, which is a pleasure to experience here in AZ. The layout is challenging, but with a variety of tee box options, fair. Devil's Claw is a bit shorter than Cattail, and the fairways are a bit more open. Which I like, LOL. Also, for some reason, the geese do not inhabit the water holes the way they do on Cattail, which means no jumping over you know what, which I also like! This course is worth the drive. Highly recommended.

Rude Marshal

Played recently and was rudely warned by a marshal that our group was behind. I admit we started off with some difficulty, but were watching for the foursome behind us if we were holding them up. We never saw that group wait for us. The marshal returned and repeated, rudely that we were behind and that he was relying on GPS to determine we were behind. We stepped it up on one hole by picking up two putts. Here's the problem. We played the first nine holes in 2 hours and one minute. So, exactly how were we playing so slow that we needed to be so rudely treated. There is more to the story. We arrived at the 17th hole. There were four groups on the tee waiting to tee off. Two groups visibly on the fairway. The marshal was no were to be found. We waited over 20 minutes to tee off. We eventually finished our round in 4 hours and 25 minutes.

Let me point out that the marshal said we would never catch up to the earlier groups in front of us.

Terrible treatment and the marshal should take lessons in pace of play and watching the real slow players.

The staff offered us a drink after we voiced our concern. We did not accept the offer. Too little, too late.

Won't be going back.

Great experience

This course was in amazing condition. Tee boxes, fairways, chipping areas, and greens were just impeccable. I highly recommend the breakfast sandwich. Nice desert wildlife. This is real desert golf.

Great course, lush fairway even approaching the greens. The greens are fair but hard to judge, interesting. They even have junior rates which is a steal!

Not Truly A Desert Course but Fun to Play

Whirlwind Golf Course was built on the Gila River Indian Reservation on a flat piece of land that is more hardscrabble waste land than desert. It is very creative with it's manufactured elevated greens and contours in the fairways. Most holes give you an ample target off the tee and then moderately challenge you with bunkers up at the greens. DC is not overly long, but the variety of holes will test most every club in your bag. The 9th is an interesting hole with a split fairway. You must decide on the teebox if you are going to the left or the right. From either side, the second shot is difficult one, to an elevated green guarded by a couple of deep bunkers. I am not a fan of the par 3 7th hole. It has a large waterfall on the right that just looks out of place on this course. This is a great course for players of all abilities and it is always in great shape. I say give it a try.

A day at Devil's Claw

Here for spring training and golf, the course was beautiful with spectacular desert landscape and views and the staff were friendly. The course was in fantastic shape and the pace of play was leisurely. I would come back and play and recommend this course to all. Bring some extra golf balls because if they go into the desert they are not to be found.

Impeccable Condition

Played this course on Wednesday afternoon at 11:50 a.m. Course conditions for absolutely amazing, teeboxes were manicured so well, that they were in better shape than most greens at the courses I play in Orlando. Sand traps were medium grade, not soft and fluffy, and not hard. They were raked very very well. Fairways were also in amazing shape, but a little soft. Every well hit fairway shot would collect mud on the ball. Play lift clean and place. Greens were also fantastic, rolled very true. On the stint meter this would probably be about a 9. Considerably faster than anything I play Orlando. The price was a little steep for my liking, but pretty much in line with the other great courses in Phoenix. One thing to remember here, is that it is a desert course and you better be accurate. If not, you will end up with a lot of lost balls. The only minus was the pace of play. Started out okay, but then got caught behind before some with three women that slowed everything down, ended up having to wait on every tee. Other than that it was a fantastic golf experience, don't hesitate.

Slow play

Very very slow group in front of us and no ranger!! This is why people quit playing golf. A 4 hr round took 4:50 mins. The pace wrecked the round

Solid courses and facility

We try to play the Whirlwind courses at least once a year. They are always well maintained. The course layout is challenging but the fairways are wide, and greens fast and in good condition. Restaurant is also very good.

Great Course But...

The course was wonderful and in excellent condition. Unfortunately the loud outdoor music from the close by hotel could be heard over the whole course and made a peaceful day on the links not enjoyable. Although I loved the course I would not play it again because of the loud music!!!
