Destroyer at Seal Beach Navy Golf Course
About
The Navy Golf Course Seal Beach is a 27-hole facility that includes the championship Destroyer Course and the nine-hole executive Cruiser Course. The 6,780-yard Destroyer Course presents a challenge even for low handicappers with a slew of hazards coming into play throughout. The small greens have challenging slopes ranging from subtle breaks to dramatic drop-offs. To make them even tougher, you'll find strategically placed bunkers lurking along the edges. The tricky doglegs, which are mostly par 4s, will force you to think carefully about your club selection, and to top it all off, water makes an appearance on almost every hole. It's a long golf course that feels even longer due to the rolling terrain, but it is more forgiving than it seems with long, wide fairways that won't penalize you for being slightly errant.

Destroyer Course at Navy Golf Club
Always come here when we are in the area. Good layout and in good shape for this time of year. Good pace of play.
nice layout with challenging green complexes
very good shape. rough areas mowed down pretty low for easy recover. plenty of trees that make hitting the fairway a must. enough water hazards to challenge the best players. deep bunkers with interesting shapes had nice sand in them - easy to escape from. greens held very well and were moderately fast, some had slopes that you had to watch for, especially in front flag locations.
the down side was it played slow - 5 hours for a Tuesday middle of the day. nobody knows how to play ready golf. every par 3 hole had the 2 groups ahead of us waiting when we arrived at the tee. on the long par 3 #17, the next group was not waved up - then none of the 8 tee shots reached the green; about 4 of them didn't make it half way to the green. frustrating to watch...
Thank you for the great, in-depth review! Be sure to come back soon with family & friends!
We appreciate your 4-star rating and review. We hope you join us for another round soon.
Thank you for your 5-star rating! Book another round with us soon.
Slow Play
Have never played here, the course was in really good shape, the layout was interesting and the greens were really nice.
That said, pace of play was a huge issue for me. It took us 4 hrs and 55 minutes to play, waited on every shot the whole day. This sucks the fun out of the game. Every group we could see in front of us was in slow motion. For you slow golfers, while others are hitting, get your yardage, pick your club and be ready to hit when it’s your turn. For you walkers, how about walking with a little urgency?
Play ready golf! Never saw a marshal on the course encouraging ready golf or telling golfers to pick up the pace.
We're glad you decided to play at #NavyGolfCourse for the first time! We hope to see you out here again soon this season.
Nice Sunday round with friends
Round went off on time, pace of play was OK (a little slow). Fairways were a little soggy and mushy. Course played well and general conditions were good. It would have been better if the club house kitchen didn't close at 3pm as we wanted to eat when we were done but had to go elsewhere.
Pleasant Surprise.
The "Destroyer" is a mature "Old School" course offering mature trees and several dog legs that offer some risk/reward choices depending on your angle off the tee and approach. You are definitely rewarded for staying in the fairway and if you stray, will often find trees challenging your next shot. Sometimes its best to just take your medicine...
While I was disappointed that the range was not open, I do understand that due to its proximity to the neighborhood homes, they open a little later in the morning. The course staff are friendly and accommodating, the course was in good condition, with the large greens being the highlight. It's nice to find challenging greens that offer undulation and interesting pin placement. The pace of play was decent at around 4 hours and 15 minutes or less, but I can imagine that during weekends, that might increase, but that applies to every course.
Some of the fairways could use some attention, but the course overall was in good shape for the price. The course is in the process of updating and improving the on course bathrooms, the snack shack on course is well stocked, again tended by a friendly staff. The Club House is nice, the restaurant seems to have a good selection of food and they offer a full bar.
I had the honor of playing with two retired veterans and the Navy Course seems to draw quite a few current and retired military personnel. It was a pleasure to play with these gentlemen (Including a Distinguished Flying Cross recipient).
Overall, for the price, it was a fun round on a quality course for the money. I will work this course into my rotation a little more often. From the excellent staff, good conditions and friendly playing partners, it was a great day!
Ghawd it was slow
Tees off at 11:15 and finished at 4:10. Waited on every hole after the third hole. Sometimes there were more than two groups waiting. Maybe a marshall could help or maybe spacing of starting times would help.
Course was in great condition, with only one or two tee boxes were in rough shape and the greens are healing nicely from the aeration. Overall, the day was great, and we did get to see the Thunderbirds take off and land at the 18th fairway. Very cool.
Best green complexes youll find!
Great course, good challenge, great greens. Lil slow pace, but worth it!
Needs Marshalls to help speed up pace
Needs marshalls, needs more restrooms, needs a players club
Good SoCal Course
For SoCal standards this is a very good course. SoCal courses typically are brown with tons of dead spots. This course takes better care of their grounds for a public course. Also they just aerated and the course was in good shoe considering that just happened. Crazy value on the price too. Will play every time I’m in SoCal
Great round
Probably the best value in SoCal. Great course. Great staff. Great day of golf. Greens were punched and I can’t wait to play again when they come around.
Aerification
I’d stay away from navy for a week or two, half the greens are temporary and they are working on fairways with the puncher.
They need the Marshall's to speak to the slow golfers who play at a slow pace.
jim Birdie jones
Great layout. Fair challenge for 125 slope from the white tees
Fun
It was fun but a little to slow for myself. I wish that they had a marshal move the play along.
Thank you for the 4 stars. We hope you'll stop by #NavyGolfCourse again on your next visit!
