Located just outside the Alps city of Grenoble, Grenoble International is a championship-caliber golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The course is set on hilly terrain and leads to some very dramatic holes. The most notable of which is the par-5 ninth that from about 200 yards plays straight downhill toward the green, with the city of Grenoble and mountains behind.
The North and South nines at Taekwang Country Club near Seoul, South Korea are lighted for play at night, which is a fantastic experience. The lights of the nearby city shimmer in the distance, while the bright lights lining the fairways keep the ball easily visible.
Opened in 2000, Wolf Creek Golf Club in Mesquite, Nev. has become one of the West's top must-plays. The golf course winds through spectacular desert canyons and features loads of elevated tee shots and dramatic green settings.
Bandon Crossings Golf Course, located along the southern coast of Oregon, isn't affiliated with the famous Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. But Bandon Crossings, located about 10 miles away from Bandon Dunes down Highway 101, is making a name for itself. Designed in 2005 by Dan Hixson, Bandon Crossings was named one of the top 10 new courses in 2007 by Golf Magazine.
The Queen's Course, one of three championship layouts at the Gleneagles Resort in Perth and Kinross, is one of the great golf courses that play less than 6,000 yards. Its short length can be deceiving, however, especially on the front nine. Meanwhile, the back nine has some shorter holes, like the 15th, a drivable 252-yard par 4. But deep and intimidating bunkers await errant drives.
Arabella Golf Club is a 90-minute drive from Cape Town, South Africa. Ranked fifth among the country's best courses by Golf Digest South Africa in 2014, the Peter Matkovich design is well worth the trip.
