At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Fantastic course
This was my first time here. Course was very challenging because of the wind, but overall it was awesome. Super friendly staff. Course was outstanding. (played at Sun).
Wonderful, challenging course
I’m local to Las Vegas and have played all three Paiute courses. These are all excellent Pete Dye designs about 30 minutes from the Las Vegas strip. The Sun course is sort of the middle course in terms of difficulty. It is both challenging and fair with several shorter par 4s. Because they are on a reservation they pump their own water so the course is in excellent condition, especially during hot summer months when other Las Vegas courses brown up. I’d highly recommend Sun, though pace of play can be an issue on weekends if groups hit and search into the desert. There is no nearby hotel or amenities other than the clubhouse restaurant which is okay and has a nice view.
Great round
Staff was good. Extremely strict with the tournament happening the following weekend. Course was beautiful and rate of play was fair. Be prepared to lose, and gain, a few balls when your not on the fairways. All in all a great experience and will definitely play again.

Excellent course, greens ran well and smooth, fairways very good, high end sand in the bunkers, layout not gimmicky, practice facility very nice. We will be returning to this resort!

Windy day but who cares. It was a blast. Can’t wait to play the other two courses.
Pure golf
Easy drive from strip , 54 holes. Snow mountain course fastest greens I putted on. Sun mountain course really hard !!
Way to windy
Great track and well maintained, the course is located in a wind tunnel, we had sustained winds of over 18 mph all day while only 10 miles away in North Las Vegas it was dead calm. I was told by a local player that it is always windy especially on the Sun Mountain course. But if wind isn't an issue for you go play, but bring a snack the hotdog at the shack was the most I HAD EVER PAID but probably no big deal for the Vegas high rollers.
LOL Had the chance to play with a very nice gentleman who plays on the KornFerry tour. Which will host an event at this venue later this year.
