Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Picturesque number five is a great–though quite intimidating–driving hole. A cluster of five bunkers guards the right side, which is the shorter route to the green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

The par-4 sixth hole, ranking as the #1 index, tops out at 426 yards. While not a terrifying hole, it demands four good shots for a par. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

he serpentine fairway at eleven, the course’s second-longest par-5, wriggles uphill past six strategically-placed bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Dye reveled in the creation of optical illusions: at the 219-yard 14th, it is hard to tell (even from this more elevated view than the tee’s) that the two larger bunkers rest some 45 yards short of the green, not next to it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Fifteen is about as clever as a short par-4 gets. A split fairway, separated by three large bunkers, allows for strategic play from tee to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Desert Challenge
Beautiful course enjoyed all 3 tracks with Wolfe my favourite. Only recommendation I’d make is try bring the wind down a few Kms, other than that an experience to remember.
Great tract
I’m a visitor from Maui, got paired with three local players on the Sun course. It was great to play with someone who had local course knowledge.
They explained that the Paiute facility is one of their favorite places to play and that because it has its own private water supply, it is one of the few courses in Las Vegas that is green (not yellow) this time of the year.
We played the Gold tees, about 6600 yds. The Sun course is challenging, but not gimmicky. The bunker sand was amazingly consistent and much fluffier than the resorts on Maui. Recommended!
Excellent Course!
Played with a group of 3 and had an excellent day. A recommendation of you are getting a ride from the strip use Uber not a Taxi.
AWESOME Course in Fantastic Condition
This was my first time playing the Sun Mountain course. I played the Wolf course last year. I love both courses. Las Vegas Piute is my favorite place to play golf in Las Vegas (including Cascata, TPC, Bears Best, etc.)
The entire place is a fantastic facility. The two courses I have played are incredible. The practice facilities are in immaculate condition and have everything you could ask for as far as practice facilities.
The greens all roll very consistent to one another but are not overly challenging. The greens are super well maintained and have hardly any non-repaired ball marks. Fairways are great, and lush. The rough is very challenging and penalizing (thick and lush) but not impossible and the surrounding scenery all around you never gets old. You have spectacular views of the mountains and the surrounding desert.
You even get a quasi air show during your round with lots of air force jets (B-1's, F-16, F-18s) landing and taking off from Nellis Air Force base. We even saw a coyote walking in the desert area right off the fairway.
Staff is courteous, friendly and helpful.
I HIGHLY recommend Las Vegas Piute.
Fun Day at Sun Mountain
You can never go wrong playing the courses at Paiute resort. All are in great shape and are fun plays. With that said, the Sun is probably my least favorite of the tracks. The easiest and least character of the 3.
Hot time in the desert
I was lucky enough to tee off at 6:30a for my round, I was even luckier to play with a local that knew the layout. It's a great course but can be confusing when standing on the tee box looking out into the desert unless you know the course and can pick a target. Like I said, having a local play with me probably saved me 2-3 strokes a side. Unbelievable track, great property, worth the drive from Vegas.
Fun with Friends
We had a great day. Courses are always in outstanding shape. We had our own private course. We’ll be back if we can get some HOT Deals.
Beautiful!
My favorite course at Paiute! Several beautiful holes wrapping around water. The course was in perfect shape and the green rolled perfectly. If you have never experienced Las Vegas Paiute, I highlight recommend it. The staff was amazing and the practice facility was top notch.
Great Facility
The Sun Course is my second favorite at Paiute. The greens roll wonderfully and the course conditioning is great. You can't beat the quiet surroundings and the wonderful views of the mountains.
Great Golf ...Greaf Staff ....
Played here for my Birthday two years in a row ...played the Sun course today.... Wolf last year....simply a awesome golf course in great shape .... pace of play was brisk round took 3hrs 45 minutes ...greens/fairways/traps ate immaculate .... starters provided good info and cold water.
I played TPC Las Vegas the day before.... this course is nicer ... at a better price ...:)...I played Wolf Creek in Mesquite .... took 5 hrs and 45 minutes ..miserable and slow as cold ketchup ....
I’ll be back next year!
Awesome without being pretentious
I love Paiute! The staff there is awesome as well as the conditions. Such a contrast between the rugged desert and the pristine course. The non resident rate is a bit of a gouge but you can usually get a deal on Golf Now that is closer to the much more reasonable resident rate. Happy to play it on a calm day as it can be a killer in the wind which happens often.
Wide fairways large greens
The greens were good considering they are still recovering from coring, rest of the course was in fantastic condition
I had a cold so I was a ride along.
My friends had a great time and COULD NOT STOP exclaiming how amazing and beautiful it was. Everyone is super nice and the facilities were very welcoming. My only complaint is that there is no soup in the spring at the onsite restaurant. A very small detail but blame my summer cold for this one.
This is a fantastic facility. All 3 courses and the 2 practice facilities are in immaculate condition. Greens all roll very consistent to one another but are not overly challenging. Fairways are great, rough is challenging and penalizing but not impossible and the surrounding scenery all around you never gets old. Staff is plentiful and courteous.
Great course at a great price
course was in great condition. challenging enough for this occasional golfer. staff very friendly. highly recommend this course, especially if you can get a Hot Deal on GolfNow!!!
Gotta play Paiute
Sun course hot deal excellent condition, greens were sanded, overall had a good round with 3 guys, friendly staff.
Great round, super course in really good conditions. I was a little disappointed that my GolfNow rewards would not go through but that did not with Paiute
