Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Picturesque number five is a great–though quite intimidating–driving hole. A cluster of five bunkers guards the right side, which is the shorter route to the green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

The par-4 sixth hole, ranking as the #1 index, tops out at 426 yards. While not a terrifying hole, it demands four good shots for a par. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

he serpentine fairway at eleven, the course’s second-longest par-5, wriggles uphill past six strategically-placed bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Dye reveled in the creation of optical illusions: at the 219-yard 14th, it is hard to tell (even from this more elevated view than the tee’s) that the two larger bunkers rest some 45 yards short of the green, not next to it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Fifteen is about as clever as a short par-4 gets. A split fairway, separated by three large bunkers, allows for strategic play from tee to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Golf in the dessert Photo submitted by lyla on 11/03/2012
Great place to play.
Staff friendly. Beautiful course. Enjoyed tremendously.
Loved the course
This was a wonderful experience for us, staff were friendly and helpful,we rented clubs and that worked out well.
The course in the desert is fascinating, gorgeous fairways and scenic throughout, lots of wildlife and course was in great shape. Loved our first desert golf experience.
Oasis in the desert
A friend recommended this course if I was ever in Vegas. It was an all-around great place to tee it up. The day I played it wasn't windy at all, but it's in the desert and very unprotected, so, I bet I just got lucky. Excellent facilities with all you- can- hit range. Staff couldn't have been nicer. The 3 courses are 35 min from the strip. I recommend playing here.
Best Conditions I've ever seen here
Including Wolf and Snow Mountain, I have played at Paiute approximately 12 times. Today was the best shape I even seen this course in, and it is usually kept in great shape. If there is a flaws to this place, it's that many of the holes look too similar to each other, and you don't feel like you're getting the full variety of shot styles.
Paiute has yet to disappoint me, and I always recommend it to Vegas golfing visitors.
Great coarse
Very nice coarse little challenging with the wind out there but very fun place will be back for sure !
A day at the Sun
Got a hot deal tee time so the price was right. Greens were lightly sanded, but playable, no mention of this when booking.Only issue we had was that upon returning home and reviewing our receipts we discovered that we were charged for 4 bottled waters and 4 Bloody Marys although we had only ordered and recieved 4 waters and 2 Bloody Marys... Would definitely return, but check my receipts immediately upon receiving them.
Minnesota finest
Nice nice and nicer 18 handicapper and I shot a 89 but I played with a local and his son the dad beat me by 25 strokes and his sophomore son beat me by 20 but they were the nices guys u could ask to play with and a wealth of knowledge and the shape and layout were tremendous for being dessert layouts would play in the future and hopefully of playing with those partners great time and played in 3.5 hours
Enjoyable round of golf
Conditions were very good with quick greens. Fairly wide fairways but on a windy day this place will test your. Pace of play was 4 hours. No housing around and we did get an Apache helicopter "show". Good value if you can get a hot deal.
Perfect day.
Though a bit pricey, it is an amazing facility = 3 fabulous courses, with no development. It is kept in prime condition and is the best in the Vegas area.
Course was in excellent shape. Greens were rolling fast and in good shape. Staff was excellent. Highly recommend playing this course
Real pure it is
No homes, great greens, fun holes, friendly road runners. Beep-beep.
Las Vegas Hidden Gem
I always enjoy playing any of the 3 Paiute golf courses. The condition of the course is always top notch. The greens were in great shape and fast. Great job done by all the staffing at Paiute, always a wonderful experience.
Not too difficult - if the wind doesn’t blow
Golfed the Sun course on a Sunday afternoon. It was a beautiful, sunny early Fall afternoon with no wind. Beautiful views of the desert and mountains. Since this was my first time at the course, I played from the white tees (12 handicap), next time I will play from the gold/yellow tees. I found the course challenging and interesting but not overly penal. However, I predict this course could be a brute if the wind blows - totally exposed. Course conditioning was excellent, but the greens surprised me by being a bit slow. I’m not a golf masochist who expects lightening fast greens. Still, the greens were not especially undulating or sloped, so they could have been a bit faster and still be within the design. Staff was very friendly. Pace started out slow, but a group let us through and we played in about 3 1/2 hours. Lunch was excellent quality at a reasonable price.
Simply Awesome
Played in the early afternoon, was met by friendly staff as well as great conditions and a great course. It's very quiet out there due to its location, it's like an oasis in the middle of the desert. We will return.
Paiute always top-notch! Other than being windy, perfect conditions, greens hard and fast. Any of the three courses are worth playing, there is no bad option. Truly a golfers paradise.
Awesome experience!!!
Staff was friendly. Course was in immaculate shaoe. Pace of play was at 4 hours or less.
