Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Picturesque number five is a great–though quite intimidating–driving hole. A cluster of five bunkers guards the right side, which is the shorter route to the green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

The par-4 sixth hole, ranking as the #1 index, tops out at 426 yards. While not a terrifying hole, it demands four good shots for a par. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

he serpentine fairway at eleven, the course’s second-longest par-5, wriggles uphill past six strategically-placed bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Dye reveled in the creation of optical illusions: at the 219-yard 14th, it is hard to tell (even from this more elevated view than the tee’s) that the two larger bunkers rest some 45 yards short of the green, not next to it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Fifteen is about as clever as a short par-4 gets. A split fairway, separated by three large bunkers, allows for strategic play from tee to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Golf in the dessert Photo submitted by lyla on 11/03/2012
Out in the middle of nowhere, fabulous.
Not a home in site nor the clubhouse for that manner. Talk about you want to get away. The Sun course is very challenging especially with the 20 mph wind. The day we played the pins were behind every bunker in front of the green. No rolling onto these greens. My wife liked the course even though some of the carries were challenging for her. At 42 bucks a real steal. I had played the wolf course 4-5 years before and did not use golf now and paid over 100.
Wonderful people and great course
My wife and I truly enjoyed this course and will play it again on our next trip to Las Vegas
great course
Great course for the money. 35 minute drive from the strip. Greens in good condition but very firm. Nice views and friendly staff. Go and play.
Great course
The course was in great shape. The course was beautiful and the weather was perfect. The only downside was out is 28 minutes from the strip. However the course was definitely worth the drive. I will be back. It was a great value with golf now.
Challenging but not frustrating
We played this course in mid-February. The pace of play was very good, the staff was cordial. Lots of people handling your bag and cleaning your clubs so be prepared to dole out some singles to several people (typical fancy course protocol). The course was in great shape. Several sets of tees so adjust to your own skill level. Greens were great, a few water holes, LOTS of sand and great views. Check the discounts on GolfNow.com otherwise you'll pay more than you should.
This course is in great shape with fast greens
I enjoyed every part of this course. Very well maintained with an excellent practice area. A+
Must play course while in Vegas
Very beautiful course and scenery. Course was well taken care of with very challenging greens. Staff was very friendly and helpful. It was my first time golfing in Vegas and would highly recommend this course
Course was very windy, but undersdtandably so in a valley.
Staff was very uncooperative once they realized we booked on golf now. They actually mentioned it to eachother and were very cold to us because of it. Very dissappointing.
Overall excellent value and good pace of play for a Saturday
Great setup with 3 golf courses, all of which are fun to play. Staff are very accomodating, and nice "specials" available if one has time to take advantage; ie. play two rounds including lunch for an excellent value. Highly recommend to players who enjoy a challenging, but not too difficult round.
As Scenic as the desert can be
We played on feb12 and joined a club member and his wife had a terrific day on a terrific course 35-40minutes from the vegas strip we were glad we made the decision to play there
Fun Gold course. Great Value.
The course was in outstanding shape. The greens are fast and true. I will play again on my next visit.
Ideal desert golf
Played mid-January during a business trip to Vegas. Really wanted to experience a course with a true desert feel--no houses, no traffic zipping by. Paiute really delivered. The conditioning was great. Views were picturesque. It was an experience that you could only have in the Nevada desert. Highly recommend. (We had no wind at all, by the way)
True greens like always..
Like always the course was in great shape. Awsome practice facility so get there early and work on your game. Only bad thing was pace of play was slow.
Brilliant … but Windy
It's my first experience on a 'desert course' … WOW !!!
The views from most holes are breathe taking … yes it's flat … yes it's windy … but it's a tough round on golf. Your drives are usually very generous but there's always traps or waste bunkers waiting for your errant T-shots Your approaches must be precise since the greens aren't very large and surrounded by bunkers and little room for errors! Did I tell you the greens are the FASTEST I've ever played? BUT … the fairways are immaculate and the greens were in pristine condition and the bunkers have great sand for you to 'practice' from …
Don't miss it … reasonable price for a great golf experience … on a vacation. Great practice facility included … staff couldn't have been friendlier or nicer.
I loved playing here and would come back for more …
Picturesque
Paiute Sun is an absolute gem. The grounds were meticulously kept, and the staff was over the top friendly. The golf course produces challenges that certainly test your ability. Tucked pins, waterlined fairways, and precise bunkering will force you to play your best.
Lastly, the Paiute Golf Resort lays on some if the most beautiful grounds I have ever seen. The mountainous back drops were a thing to see alone. At every hole, you are looking at natures painting. I have never been so distracted by scenery at a golf course in my life. Paiute is a must play AND a must see!
Great course, windy day.
I know the course can't help the conditions, but it was really windy. Other than a tee box or two the course was in excellent shape. The cashier was less than friendly, almost acted as though we were trying to get away with something. Maybe it was just the good rate we got by using golfnow?
I cannot express just how much I enjoyed this course!!!!
I cannot express just how much I enjoyed this course!!!! I staff was super friendly and very attentive. The facilities were top notch. All of my needs were well anticipated! The course was in excellent shape and it was absolutely beautiful there. Sometimes, I forgot that I was there to play golf as I took in the fantastic scenery. The greens were some of the fastest that I have ever played, so it took a few holes to adjust. The pace of play was not too bad for a Friday morning.
The course is not very close to the strip, but I had a rental car (would not recommend a taxi trip unless you are a big spender). Since I had the rental, I was at ease getting there and back. One thing that is for sure; I will be sure to play this course whenever I am in Vegas.
Wonderful experience
Wonderful experience. Played Sun course. It was in great condition. Greens were consistent and held the approach shot very well. Layout is challenging, yet realistic if you play the correct tees.
I was a single and was matched with two
Gentlemen from London, England. We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the day together.
This course is located away from Las vegas, about a 30 minute drive from the south end of town. Easy drive to the course on hwy 95.
Overall Good Quality
Everyone was helpful and course conditions were without need of attention. Good value for the GolfNow Hot Deal Offer.
All around great round , I will play again .
Sceenery unique "very cool ". Amenities excellent . Staff friendly and helpful . Nice paractice area . Cart equiped with GPS .
Course was in great shape , greens fast and true . Layout not to difficult The course is in such great shape if you keep the ball in play you will have a great surface to hit from. Sand could use some work .
Will definitly be back when in town.
