Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Picturesque number five is a great–though quite intimidating–driving hole. A cluster of five bunkers guards the right side, which is the shorter route to the green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

The par-4 sixth hole, ranking as the #1 index, tops out at 426 yards. While not a terrifying hole, it demands four good shots for a par. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

he serpentine fairway at eleven, the course’s second-longest par-5, wriggles uphill past six strategically-placed bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Dye reveled in the creation of optical illusions: at the 219-yard 14th, it is hard to tell (even from this more elevated view than the tee’s) that the two larger bunkers rest some 45 yards short of the green, not next to it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Fifteen is about as clever as a short par-4 gets. A split fairway, separated by three large bunkers, allows for strategic play from tee to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Golf in the dessert Photo submitted by lyla on 11/03/2012
Simply stated, awesome course. If you are in the area, this is a course you need to play. Greens and fairways -- superb.
Simply stated, awesome course. If you are in the area, this is a course you need to play. Greens and fairways -- superb. The course is carved into the desert terrain at the base if the mountains. Every hole was a work of art and offers a challenge for any level golfer. A must play if you are in the Vegas area. Only 25 minutes from the strip.
Paiute-Sun Mountain
Fabulous conditions and greens were superb...probably running a 12. Great fairway turf but sand was a bit thin. Pace of play was an issue until our 3-some went thru a slow 4-some at the turn. No Marshalls in site and when we finished told Marshalls that group was 4 holes behind us slowing up entire track.
Great course, slow pace
Pro shop staff not very cordial, outside of pro shop everyone was super. Course very nice, but play was extremely slow.
Nice, but tough
All of the Paiute courses are a good experience every time. I think Sun is the toughest of the three. All three have bunkers, but many more of the bunkers on Sun are in play for good players. And the last hole, with a small green and water all the way down the left, is brutal when it plays into the prevailing wind.
For summer golf in the Southwest there is no better.
From the driving range throughout the course the conditions were great.
Sun - Great course, incredible atmosphere
I had been told that all three courses at Paiute are great and they were right, at least with the Sun Course. It's a fair drive from the strip (solid 30+ min) but that's what's so great about it. You are away from the city, in the middle of the desert with incredible mountain views. It's really a nice getaway from the glitz of the strip. The course was in great shape. Tough layout, quite challenging, greens rolled true and fairly fast. Not tour fast but fast enough for non-tournament play. Just fast enough to make you nervous. The different tee sets really do offer a nice difference for various levels of golfers. Beautiful clubhouse and very friendly staff.
One of my buddies had his clubs shipped to the course and they are sitting waiting for him upon arrival. When we left they said they would take care of everything for him and they arrived back at his house safely. Another guy rented and really liked the TaylorMade RBZs. Sweet driver.
Great all around!
Well worth the trip
Only one word comes to mind for this Golf Facility
SPECTACULAR. The condition of the course was much better than anything I have played close to the Las Vegas Strip.. It was an easy drive out rt. 95. The staff were very professional and offered advise when asked. The clubhouse was beautiful, well designed, the food was tasty and the servce was great. I like to play new courses every time I travel to Vegas, but with three differnt courses here,I think I have to look no further for a great Vegas golf
experience.
Overall, goood
overall, good!
however, the back nine was pretty much the same same as the front nine, i think...
Excellent!
By far the best course we played in five days of golf in Vegas.
The course as in great condition.
We enjoyed the golf outing at Paiute. Golfed Sun and Mountain course in the same day.
The marshall wanted us to hurry our game as a foursome - when we were almost done at the 15th hole and not quite yet at 3 hours of playtime. We didn't quite understand why as it was a good pace. But a twosome behind us was complaining - so we got the whip! With 3 holes left in 3 hours of time already played, we felt it was an unjust push to appease the twosome behind us.
Great value
We had an excellent time playing Tuesday morning. The conditions, pace of play, and the staff made our experience very enjoyable. We'll be back for more!
better than rated
a great course for all levels. no tricky holes, just good golf.
Solid Layout, great greens
Likes:
Challenging layout
Very good condition
Superb, smooth, true greens- put it on line and it stays on line
Dislikes:
Pace of play on the slow side- a few reachable par 5's contribute to the slow play, and we played the yellow tees (next to last set)
Well worth it
The course was in great shape and everyone on staff was very helpful and friendly. We had an afternoon tee time and although it was 100 degrees, the light breeze made it feel cooler. I look forward to returning and playing this course again.
Great course, very friendly helpful staff, greens were fast and true.
Really liked playing here, wind conditions make the course play longer, on most holes you better use more club. The wind made it feel much cooler than the ambient temperature which was great. We played the sun course and would love to play the other two next time out.
Excellent All-Around Resort
Played the Sun Mountain course during twilight (2:30 tee time). Great pace, gorgeous course in excellent condition, staff extremely friendly and attentive to your needs BEFORE even asking. Will definitely recommend and be back to play the other two courses.
Amazing course surrounded by vast deserts and mountains
The staff were extremely helpful, wildlife was abundant and course holes were brilliant and well mark. Amazing golf excursion.
Finally, a calm spring day on this desert course !
Our past spring visits had us experience howling winds and unseasonably cool temperatures, but not this time. No extra layers necessary. Great course conditions, bright sunny day, and we were joined by a local restauranteur who owns a small chain. We enjoyed a complimentary breakfast the next day thanks to that single-digit handicapper who just boomed 'em off the tees and was sinking putts from everywhere. Afterwards, we hit the 19th hole and enjoyed our favorite adult beverages. Definitely worth the drive from the strip and be sure to use your GPS in your car or phone so you don't miss your exit near downtown like I did ! Looks like this will be one of our permanent fixtures on our annual spring trip. And deals on GolfNow help buy a beverage from the beverage cart.
The course was in great shape. Pro Shop and Ranger need training on how to deal with customers. It was not a pleasant experience we had
When we check into the Pro Shop assistant did greet us but never did mention they had a tournament on our course to let us know the play might be slow. We got to hole 10 and had 3 groups waiting to tee off including us. My son call the Pro Shop however no one answer the phone. He call again on hole # 11 and informed the person who he talk to there was a big back up He felt the Pro Shop didn't seem to care. The Ranger finally came around when we were on hole # 13 by the putting green went right by us without even stopping or saying he took care of slow play. Need to train your staff how to handle customers. The sad thing the other 3 all worked at a casino and a lot of people always ask them where is a good place to play. Took us over 5 hours to play!
