Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Picturesque number five is a great–though quite intimidating–driving hole. A cluster of five bunkers guards the right side, which is the shorter route to the green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

The par-4 sixth hole, ranking as the #1 index, tops out at 426 yards. While not a terrifying hole, it demands four good shots for a par. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

he serpentine fairway at eleven, the course’s second-longest par-5, wriggles uphill past six strategically-placed bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Dye reveled in the creation of optical illusions: at the 219-yard 14th, it is hard to tell (even from this more elevated view than the tee’s) that the two larger bunkers rest some 45 yards short of the green, not next to it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Fifteen is about as clever as a short par-4 gets. A split fairway, separated by three large bunkers, allows for strategic play from tee to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Golf in the dessert Photo submitted by lyla on 11/03/2012
Course was in great shape. I have now played two of the three courses and both have been very nice. Hope to play the third course on next trip to Vegas.
Great time
This is the second time we played this course and we had a great time. Course is beautiful. Play was slow bot still enjoyed it.
Fantastic course.
What an amazing group of courses, and views. The course was in great shape, the wind was an interesting addition, greens were great.
Beautiful desert course
Best place to golf in Vegas. Worth the drive. Immaculate
Great course. But gale force winds made it tough
The course conditions were great and the staff were friendlye but the extremely windy conditions made the course very difficult to play. It is located in the middle of the desert so no wind breaks around to buffer the 40-50 mph wind gusts we experienced. I would like to play this course again under better weather conditions.
Desert beauty
I play courses for their uniqueness. This is a course you need to play. Very interesting hole layouts. Nothing impossible. The views of the mountains and desert are spectacular. The rough is challenging and the fairways soft. The greens are puttable but you have to read them carefully. There were bunkers to keep it challenging but not enough to annoy you. The practice facility was great too The staff were excellent too making this a "do again and again" experience.
Why go anywhere else?
If you are in Vegas for work or play and want to have a memorable golf experience go to Paiute. First time playing Sun (beautiful) but have played Wolf and Snow in prior trips. It left me and my colleagues wondering why we'd go play anywhere else in Vegas. Next year it will be all-Paiute. Great condition, challenging but fair, and just a spectacular setting. Highly recommend.
Wind
The course was great however the wind reached gusts up to 40 miles an hour sometimes. Made it very difficult to play for all on the course.
Worth playing again and again
Course is always in excellent shape. Location a half hour outside the city is very peaceful and serene. Course is challenging without being tricked up.
Great course
The condition of the 3 courses are always in great shape. Played the Sun course this time. Fairways are in great shape and the greens are well protected by bunkers and depressions. Greens are fast but roll true. it's always windy at Paiute so you need to hit lower shots.
Great round of golf! Highly recommend this course.
Down side is its and Hour + from the strip so give your self time to get there so to worm up before you play.
I play 10 rounds in Vegas every spring and never miss a chance to play all three Pauite courses. The quality of the experience is always first class. The course is always impeccable, the practice facilities are fantastic and the staff really care that you are well looked after. Definitely top 5 in the country on my list. If you like to practice you should add that into the cost of greens fees, a lot of courses will charge you for a bucket of balls. Here it is all included. I usually go a few hours early to work on my game. The only thing to consider is the wind, on a calm day it is 15 mph. If it is very windy on the strip it will be very tough conditions. You will need to rent a car to get there, about a 35 minute drive. Still well worth it. Five stars all around
Very Windy
Tough course in the wind as there isn't much protection. Had fun with the challenge and would definitely play the course again.
Little further away but worth the drive
Paiute resort has 3 courses that are all great. I got a nice deal on golf now to play Sun Mt. Layout is fantastic and course is not overly difficult as long as you're ok with the putting. There were some bare spots but only in areas that are essentially not part of the course where you should be hitting the ball. Greens were little beat up aesthetically but it rolled well and pretty fast compared to what it looked like. Its always a treat to play here and I enjoy all 3 courses here at Paiute.
Snow and sun
We played snow course last week and had to get back to play again due to the true greens and tough approach shots. Second time around, my three putts turned to two putts. Very fun place to play.
