Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Picturesque number five is a great–though quite intimidating–driving hole. A cluster of five bunkers guards the right side, which is the shorter route to the green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

The par-4 sixth hole, ranking as the #1 index, tops out at 426 yards. While not a terrifying hole, it demands four good shots for a par. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

he serpentine fairway at eleven, the course’s second-longest par-5, wriggles uphill past six strategically-placed bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Dye reveled in the creation of optical illusions: at the 219-yard 14th, it is hard to tell (even from this more elevated view than the tee’s) that the two larger bunkers rest some 45 yards short of the green, not next to it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Fifteen is about as clever as a short par-4 gets. A split fairway, separated by three large bunkers, allows for strategic play from tee to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Windy and WOW!
12:40 tee time, on a Monday afternoon in February. 75' and sunny with 30 mile per hour gusts!!! The course is literally in the middle of NOWHERE!!! It's at the end of the exit with the only building in site amongst the course and mountains is the clubhouse/banquet hall!! Calling it remote would be an understatement.!.! Layout was insane!! Awesome practice facilities and hospitable employees await your start here... Class establishment! Course itself (I played the sun course) was challenging but fun. Everything was in great shape, from greens, fairways , to cart paths etc. GREAT golfing experince!! The only minus, was the wind! But with every bad, there is a good, at least for me... Used the wind on a par 5, with wind at my back to hit my first ever (and probably last)300+ yard drive! Worth the drive and money to play this gem of a course!
Almost great
Of the three course at Paiute I would rate this one 3rd over. It is still a good course especially for the residential or twilight rate as a visitor. The course has the grainiest greens of the three but overall course condition is still better than most everything open to the public in Las Vegas and outtter areas. Course has phenomenal practice facilities, two driving ranges that put many private courses to shame. I would recommend all courses at Paiute, all are worth the drive and I would rank them in condition as Wolf, Snow and Sun and toughness Snow, Wolf and Sun
Sunny Course, Sunny Review
Located 15 miles or so northwest of Vegas proper this VERY desert course (one of three at this location) was a delight to play. I caught perfect weather, not hard to do in this part of Nevada, was matched up with three great people and we had a great time. Pace of play was a little slow due to Korean junior play in front of us. Excellent warm up facilities, friendly roadrunners begging peanuts, on time start, wide fairways, undulating greens that were not excessive and good sand made this course a fair test and a fun day.
Well Maintained Desert Course
Course conditions were excellent for January even with cold temperatures. Enjoyed the higher altitude (~1500 feet higher than Las Vegas.) subtract at least half a club on approach shots. Layout is decent but stay in play- the holes are surrounded by large gravel fields. Greens are tricky to read lots of subtle micro-breaks. Tough par 3s.
Well worth the drive out of town
For the time of year, course was in great nick, and I like to see green grass, reasonably generous fairways made for an enjoyable yet challenging round, vistas where to die for, would come back and play the other two courses
True to Pete Dye, diabolical greens and tricky layout.
I was really impressed with the layout of the course. You must take careful consideration of every shot you make. Nothing new with a Pete Dye course, he loves to torture golfers at every chance. The course lays at an angle in a valley with mountains close by. This leads to some very tough reads on the putts. Course conditions were near tournament quality. Just accept that the first time you play it, you're not going to make many putts.
Best course in vegas
This course is totally worth the drive out of town. It is absolutely the best course in Vegas and I will continue to bring friends and family to this beautiful course.
Sun Mountain nov/2015
Excellent course. Fairways lush, well groomed. Consistent greens. First time here and will come back. Only thing is they let a walk on two some two groups ahead of us and they slowed the round down considerably..
Outstanding Course
A great course for all skill level players. Unbelievable price from golfnow. Can't wait to play it again.
A must...
From the MGM it took us just under 25 min to drive there in the middle of the day on a work day. Not a problem at all and if any of you thought this is far, it is worth it. We played the Sun course and it is in great shape.
This time of year it is cool and because it is quite exposed as a course the breeze adds to the coolness.
We teed off at 12:30 and by the 2nd last hole the sun had dipped behind the small mountain and made it a bit hard to see your ball.
Not quite sure how GolfNow offers later start times (like 5PM???) when the course doesn't have lights.
worth the travel
it is absolutely worth the drive out to Paiute. I've played wolf and now the sun course and they're both great tracks. Highly recommend playing there.
Fabulous day at Sun Mountain Paiute
Great course and perfect weather. Staff was all very friendly and pace of play was great. Take a rock club that you don't mind hitting out of the desert.
Great Course
The Paiute courses are great and the facility is great too. You will be treated like a king the minute you pull in the parking lot.
The Course is in excellent condition and very scenic.
The course in well kept, fairways are great and greens
are perfect. The course marshal kept us informed of
the slow pace in some holes. Par 3's are good and
challenging. Overall...This Golf Course is great!
Vic Pineda
the staff
Every time I play the course the staff is getting very rude. Yesterday course removed all players from the course then closed the golf course due to flash flooding. After the round I approached the staff about a rain check & they told me 2 things (1) that the course was not responsible for my rain check as I booked with golf now & when I informed the course that due to the conditions that we only played 6 holes in the 2 hours from our tee time, I was accused of telling lies to get the rain check. It was cart path only & we were delayed 15-20 minutes during a rain shower. Then we waited nearly 45 minutes to be evacuated from the course as there was flash flooding.
Pristine conditions
This course is in really nice condition and a good challenge. We played it in a brisk wind that made it a really tough. Fairways are lush and the greens are smooth and true. Don't over read the break though! Make the drive from Vegas and you won't be disappointed.
Always a great time!
We played the "sun course" and had a great time.
The rough was a little tall because of rains a few days earlier. The starter pointed this out before we teed off.
Fairways and greens are in great shape. Very interesting Pete Dye course.
Amazing
Out in the middle of nowhere is a hidden Las Vegas gem called Paiute. Everything about this place is top notch. Huge clubhouse with stocked pro shop and huge bar area amongst the dining room. Pristine practice area with huge buckets of range balls and chipping and putting greens right there. I've lived in Vegas for over a year now and I can't believe I've waitrd this long to play. There's so many nice courses for locals to play, but this is by far my new favorite. Can't beat the Golfnow price of $29.
The tee boxes were perfectly maintained and clean...not full of divots and uneven areas. Fairways are green and lush. The roughs are kept at a decent length and are a bit of a challenge to hit the perfect shot out thus this keep it in the fairway. The fairways are pretty wide at preferred landing areas.
Now for the greens...best in Vegas. They are large and in immaculate condition. Not full of ball marks but I still fixed those that were left behind. These greens roll so true and smooth...not all bumpy like most overplayed corses around. At the end of September you'd think they'd be full of repaired ballarks but for some reason they heal quickly especially considering how much play these courses get.
The started approached us at the first tee and asked if we'd like to start on the back cuz of a Firestone that had just teed off ahead of us. He went and checked the 10th and came back with an all clear. Glad we did cuz we blazed thru the entire round without seeing or waiting on anyone. This place was packed and yet you get the feel that you've got the course all to yourself. A must play for anyone that values a top notch golf course...a bit of a drive but so very well worth it!
Piaute
2nd time playing Sun. Beautiful course great condition, surrounded by the desert with distant views of mountains in all directions with no houses within miles. Greens were in very in very good condition and rolled true a bit on the fast side. Good time had by all in our group.
Course is a bit out of the way north of Las Vegas, but worth the trip.
Wow! What a course!
Just arriving at the course, we could not believe the Hot Deal of 35USD we got through GolfNow. Stunning scenery with the mountains in the background and the course looking great. Out on the course we just laughed. The course was in mint condition with excellent fairways and simply fantastic greens, and we even had to stop a couple of times to take some pictures on the front nine. Very good layout with every hole almost separated from the others so you felt almost alone on the course.
And how about 6 beers for 16USD from the service cart? =)
The course is definetly worth playing at the usual rate, and if you find the kind of deal we did, well, it's simply unbeatable value for money. We won't look anywhere else but Paiute for our coming rounds in Vegas. =)
