Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Picturesque number five is a great–though quite intimidating–driving hole. A cluster of five bunkers guards the right side, which is the shorter route to the green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

The par-4 sixth hole, ranking as the #1 index, tops out at 426 yards. While not a terrifying hole, it demands four good shots for a par. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

he serpentine fairway at eleven, the course’s second-longest par-5, wriggles uphill past six strategically-placed bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Dye reveled in the creation of optical illusions: at the 219-yard 14th, it is hard to tell (even from this more elevated view than the tee’s) that the two larger bunkers rest some 45 yards short of the green, not next to it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Fifteen is about as clever as a short par-4 gets. A split fairway, separated by three large bunkers, allows for strategic play from tee to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Sun and Wind on the Sun Course
The weather was pretty cooperative this day, slight breeze and mostly sunny. The course played hard and fast as did the greens. It really helped to be playing with a friend who had been on the course previously as the landing areas are not obvious from the tee box. I recommend a yardage book the first time you play, even the GPS didn't tell all.
The greens are what make this course tougher to play, you think the break is too the valley when in fact it's towards downtown Las Vegas.
Staff was friendly, helpful, and very professional. Facilities are very nice, pro shop is well stocked with a wide variety to clothes and accessories.
Fun course to play, you will enjoy this course if the weather is good.
This course was in great condition.
I would like to play again. A very challenging course. The pace of play was good.
Great Course
Fantastic condition for a course that sees it's fair share of weather conditions. It's challenging, especially if you can't keep the driver straight - getting into the scrabble/rough will be a ball lost or at least one penalty stroke trying to regain the fairway.
Great course design and layout.
This is an extremely fare and challenging course. Greens were very true, no tricks breaks less than one would think. Greens hold shot and long approach shots.
1st group off
We had the 1st teetime of the day, our foursome played in 3 hour, course conditions are superb, fairways provide for a wide landing area yet pose many good challenges. The greens rolled well and had some subtle and not so breaks but were very fair. All in all, a great value for a great course.
Very Well Maintained Course
This is a great course and worth the drive. Greens, fairways, traps and tee boxes are all in excellent condition. If the weather forecasters are calling for a windy day, I might recommend another track, as there isn't much around to slow block the path. Great track otherwise, and highly recommended.
Outstanding
This course is well worth the drive outside of Vegas. Impeccably maintained with luscious fairways and fast greens!!!
Our Favorite
Always great to play there. The staff is so friendly.
Most play well in Vegas
really enjoyed this course, pace of play was great
Well worth the drive
Piute, Sun Mountain was an excellent experience and well worth the 20 minute drive from Vegas. Played in December, the course was in good shape and the greens rolled very nice.
A great course in North Las Vegas
Excellent course in very good condition. Just outside North Las Vegas it is worth the drive. Three courses at one location.
Phenomenal Conditions
Best greens and fairways I've seen in the south west. Very well maintained and greens were fast and firm. Pace of play was great and course layout was interesting. Got a great GOLFNOW rate on a superior course. It is exposed and a little windy outside Las Vegas but still a short ride from the strip.
Phenomenal Conditions
Best greens we've played on in a long time. Fairways are awesome and there are multiple tees to choose from. It is harder than it looks. It was very windy and cool for us but I can't wait to go back again. Clubhouse fod was great and the prices were extremely reasonable. PLAY IT!
Great Fairways and greens
Will play all three golf courses this month. Nice soft sand traps too.
Looks tight but don't worry, Sun Course
Really nice course in the middle of nowhere. Course conditions excellent. Lots of maintenance during play. This could be reduced. Course looks tight but plenty of room. Highly recommend.
sun and snow mountain courses
Played the sun mountain course for the first time.....it was awesome!!!! Got the round done in 4 hours and did the playback fee of 40 dollars for the snow mountain course. Played 2 top notch courses for an avg of 80 dollars a round. Beautiful backdrops, awesome course conditions and extreme friendly staff. Had such a good time I'm scheduling the Wolf course for tomorrow. A must play for true golf fans in Vegas!!!!!
Don't Miss
I've played some nice courses around the country. This one is in the top ten for sure. Manicured like a lawn are the fairways. Not a bad lie anywhere. The greens are fast and receptive. We lucked out on the weather, beautiful 80 degrees and almost no wind. If you are heading to Vegas anytime soon, put this one on your list. They also have the Snow and Wolf course. Those will be our next tee time when we go back to Vegas.
Enjoyed it immensely!
The staff at Paiute is incredibly helpful. We always look forward to playing any of their three courses. A must course to play in this area.
Great golf with great views
We played Sun and Wolf on two consecutive days and thoroughly enjoyed both rounds. The courses are maintained to an excellent level, the layouts are interesting and challenging , and the staff were very friendly and helpful. To top it off, the views are incredible. The only disappointment was the pace of play, lots of waiting. We will definitely be back!
