Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Picturesque number five is a great–though quite intimidating–driving hole. A cluster of five bunkers guards the right side, which is the shorter route to the green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

The par-4 sixth hole, ranking as the #1 index, tops out at 426 yards. While not a terrifying hole, it demands four good shots for a par. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

he serpentine fairway at eleven, the course’s second-longest par-5, wriggles uphill past six strategically-placed bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Dye reveled in the creation of optical illusions: at the 219-yard 14th, it is hard to tell (even from this more elevated view than the tee’s) that the two larger bunkers rest some 45 yards short of the green, not next to it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Fifteen is about as clever as a short par-4 gets. A split fairway, separated by three large bunkers, allows for strategic play from tee to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Good for the money
it was good for the money. Greens were kinda dried out and rough.
Great Desert Course
I was paired with two locals and we teed off at 7:36 AM and played 18 in just over 3 hours. The course is in fantastic shape. They had aerated two weeks before so the greens were a little bumpy but not nearly as bad most courses would be two weeks after aeration. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I am going to try to get in another round at one of their other course before we leave this area.
Punched and Sanded Greens Surprise!
There is nothing more disappointing than to check in at the Pro Shop and be told that the greens have just been punched and sanded! We were extremely disappointed at the condition of the greens which make up nearly 50% of your experience playing a round of golf. We were also very disappointed at the 'option' given to us to play a different course if we could wait another 90 minutes and play late in the afternoon on a very hot day! The Pro convinced us that the greens weren't 'that bad' and they would receive the ball well and roll fast, in retrospect I think he was just pulling my leg. The greens were terrible and our round was ruined. In review, my wife and I should have refused to play and asked for a refund. We came a long way to play at Paiute's Sun course and left very disappointed to say the least.
Desert golf at its best!
Had the opportunity to play wolf at Paiute and was impressed! 30 minutes from the Rio but an easy drive. If you didn't know course was there you'd miss it in the desert. At arrival staff was great and attentive. Driving range was enormous, widest I had ever seen. Unfortunately the greens were punched two weeks prior so I advise asking before playing. Played with a member who said this was the best of the 3 courses. Multiple memorable holes... I typically rank courses based on par 3's, and 3 of the 4 were great, including island green signature hole. Very windy day so be prepped to +/- 2 clubs. Enjoy!
Unreal...weather(bad) and Course (excellent)
The weather went VERY bad on use when we started this round on the Sun Course. Got to hole 5...and called it quits. Had white caps on the pond it was blowing so bad. However, the first 4 holes played GREAT, and the course was unreal beautiful. Probably one of the nicest courses i've played in and around Vegas. We ended up getting a raincheck and coming back and playing the Snow course. It too was a great round of golf!!! HIGHLY recommend this course to anyone!! I am a garbage golfer, and this course was forgiving enough for my game play, but was also tough enough to challenge the scratch golfers we were paired up with (they had a great time, or so they said). Really a great course!!
GREAT Course and Facilities
My friends and I Love this track when we make our yearly pilgrimage to Las Vegas.....
Scenic, Challenging, Fair
The course was in really good shape. You are able to see what you need to do from the tee-no blind shots or tricked up holes. Greens were fast and smooth. I would play here again.
The guy who checked us in at the pro shop was rude both times - he should be fired! Everyone else was great.
Fun even in bad weather
It rained, it blew, it got cold, but we enjoyed ourselves anyway. The starter allowed us to start at 10 so that we could play faster, considering the weather conditions. We finally caugyt up to a foursome at hole 16. We made the turn in 1 1/2 hours. There weren't many people playing because of the weather. The course is in great shape and plenty of challenges on every hole. We didn't take a lot of time to study our shots, because we just kept moving. The greens were plenty fast, and the wind definitely moved our putts. This is a great complex with 3 challenging courses. It is out of town, so it is cooler, and in this case colder. Great experience that you should not pass up.
Worth the trip out - Especially for a 36 hole day
I disappeared from work obligation for a day while in Vegas to visit Paiute and was glad that I did. I played a Wolf-Sun doubleheader and very much enjoyed both rounds. The wind was unbearable but that isn't the courses fault. As a result, pace of play was below average. The courses were true desert golf which is exactly what I was after. Great conditioning and everyone there wasn't just nice but exceptionally nice and helpful. I would go back.
Awesome!!!
Played 7 different courses this week and this was the best of a great group. Staff were great driving range and practice area super and course was in near perfect condition. With the extra miles to get here would play again And again. Golf now price was incredible .
Great three courses in one location
Paiute golf resort is about 45 minutes from the Vegas Strip. It has three distinct courses- snow, sun and wolf. I played the Sun course in the morning (8:30) and I managed to play it in 2 1/2 hours by myself despite 30 miles gusting wind. The course is in great condition and fairly flat. I think the course is 3000 feet above sea level since my drives were 20 yds longer. I would definitely recommend the resort if you don't mind driving.
Fantastic layout. Three really tough but fun courses!
Beautiful course and facilities. Staff extremely helpful and gracious
Excellent after water damage
Course was in great shape, people nice and friendly.
Links style play
Played Sun Course which I have been told is the middle of the pack in difficulty. The course and club house were beautiful. The staff was friendly and very efficient. This is a very popular golf course so it is important to make a reservation and to show up early. Well worth the 30 minute trip from the Strip!
