Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Picturesque number five is a great–though quite intimidating–driving hole. A cluster of five bunkers guards the right side, which is the shorter route to the green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

The par-4 sixth hole, ranking as the #1 index, tops out at 426 yards. While not a terrifying hole, it demands four good shots for a par. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

he serpentine fairway at eleven, the course’s second-longest par-5, wriggles uphill past six strategically-placed bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Dye reveled in the creation of optical illusions: at the 219-yard 14th, it is hard to tell (even from this more elevated view than the tee’s) that the two larger bunkers rest some 45 yards short of the green, not next to it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

Fifteen is about as clever as a short par-4 gets. A split fairway, separated by three large bunkers, allows for strategic play from tee to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 12/16/2025

honest staff
Playing alone. Staff had me which carts to join the three some. About the 9th hole I realized I did not have my car keys. I called and the staff found them in the cart they switched me from. .. Thank you!!!
good quality and price for the round
short and sweet was treated really well by all at the facility and its a fun and medium to hard layout from the blue tees. great fun
Commitment
The area suffered a flash flood in Aug/13 which affected some holes. We played Sun course 6 months later and it had all been repaired reflecting the commitment and care given this course.
Great Round of Golf
Course marshal could have done more to help pace of play, but the course is a great value. Enjoyable Round.
Very attractive course
Very attractive course. Excellent greens. It was an enjoyable challenge, but be prepared for it to be windy.
Slow play
Started at 130 slow play started after3. Had to skip 14 and 15 to finish .we had to wait every single shot.
VERY very annoying!!!!!???? But Love the courses.
cold windy slow but a nice track
day started off with 10min delay as the course was backed up. we were told there was a tourney so im not sure what was the cause. fairways were wide and in nice condition. greens were nice tho not as fast as i expected. very windy day so lots to factor into the shots you wanted to play. waited 5mins min every hole and we finished in 5hrs. i would play again and hope that the slow play was an aberration.
Desert Delight
Paiute is off the beaten path of Vegas but worth the trip. It is a links style course and I got to play with only a mild breeze, windy days would totally change the course dynamics. Good practice facilities and pace of play. Loved getting away to a course with no housing surrounding it, always a bonus treat. Greens are slick but fair. One of the best courses, especially for the price, I have experienced in Vegas.
Must play - Diamond in the Desert!
I played 3 other courses while in Las Vegas all under $100 and the others were built as part of residential communities. I understand the reasons for it however, doesn't make it a very enjoyable for me. Paiute Golf Resort has no houses and was a real gem. Located about 30 minutes from the Strip in the middle of the desert and nestled in the foothill of the mountains. This setting provided some beautiful scenery and observed some great wildlife including a golden eagle and many road runners. The course was in great shape considering it hadn't rained for over 2 months. What really impressed me was how the staff dealt with our tee time conflict.
We actually teed-off on Wolf #10 because a very large group from Utah had booked 20 foursomes as a shot gun on the front. By the time we got to the 12th hole we were passed by a parade of golf carts and found ourselves in the middle of the shot gun??? Don't know how this happened however the marshals were quick to track us down and apologize. They offered us multiple free drink tickets and our choice to stay on the Wolf course or play one of their other courses. We determined that the pace of play would have to be quicker on another course so we played Sun Mountain. After the round we were given a full refund, more apologies and more free drink tickets!
I would have returned to play this course again as the resort was very impressive. However, based on the way we were treated I decided to take the time to write this review as the staff at Paiute Golf Resort should be recognized for doing a terrific job! Everyone makes mistakes but its how you handle them that can make all the difference. I congratulate Paiute's management for making customer service a top priority.
Gotta love Pete Dye course design! The bunkers are well placed and the use of wood ties is a nice visual effect.
Enjoyed The Day
Course was in very good condition and pace of play was excellent. Will go back again next time we are in Las Vegas.
Great Condition. Diamond in the Desert.
This is the only golf complex for miles. It far enough away from the road that it is out of sight and mind. The view is vast and beautiful. the course condition is fantastic. The marshal was a little delayed when tending to a very slow group.
Best In Vegas
Do I need to say more? ...Best in Vegas by far!... Always in perfect condition!...its a gem! Highly recommend all three courses with The Wolf being the hardest!
Great Experience...Again
Paiute is a great facility. There are 3 18s. We played Sun Mountain. It was in great shape. Was challenging but not punishing. Couldn't have asked for a nicer day. If the wind isn't coming out of the North, it's always a joy to play Paiute.
Never Disappoints
On average, I'll visit Las Vegas 8-10 times a year because of work and family, and like clock work, this is one of the courses that I'll visit. Why you ask? Simply put, the condition of the course(s), the pace of play, and professionalism of the staff. On top of that, from time to time you can get a good deal on Golfnow. As far as the difficulty of the course, I would say the 3 course's are "fair" to say the least. In the afternoon, the wind can pick up and the courses can become a bit more challenging because of it. As far as the pace of play, I've never had a round last more than 4 hours. More often than not, I'll finish early and practice a bit more after the round. Though it's far from the strip, it feels like I'm at a country club. Never had a bad experience at Paiute and hopefully it stays that way. A must play while in LV for sure.
excellent Condition
It was a cold day but i enjoyed the round non the less. The course is in excellent condition. There's plenty of chance to encounter wild life. Course layout is not particularly difficult but the desert wind definitely makes challenging.
Excellent View and Excellent course design...
We played at Sun Mountain Course on Dec. 5 . It was very cold day. But snow cap mountain and beautiful scenery made us cheerful. The course was well-maintained. Green was fast.
We enjoyed our round...
Worth the trip!!!!
Played on Dec 1st. Perfect condition. One of the best I have played regarding perfect fairways and greens. Very fast greens make this course challenging. Had a great experience overall.
Love this course!
Was very impressed with the condition of the Sun course after the floods. It really is in fantastic condition!
Hated the staff
Golf Course is great. Too bad the staff acts like a bunch of guys who don't like their job.
Caution
I drove to the course but was unable to play it. However, I learned three things that you may want to consider.
1. There was a major flood in the summer that severely damaged the three courses. Each was closed for repair & restoration. Wolf remains closed to rebuild the island green.
2. This is a remote desert location. There is NOTHING here but golf courses & clubhouse. In discussion with staff & members on site, I learned weather can be significantly different here as contrasted with the Strip. Temp is probably 10+ degrees cooler. Wind blows more often & with greater intensity (20-30 mph). Suggestion: call the course b/f you book your tee time to discuss wind conditions. For example, yesterday, golfers were clothed in ski caps & multiple layers to fight off wind chill from combined effect of reduced temperature & significant wind. In contrast, tourists were walking comfortably without coats on the Strip.
3. These appear to be superior golf courses. Due to isolated location, there is nothing taller than 5 feet (abundant cacti) surrounding the course.
