These 13 Texas golf courses have dominated a decade of Golfers' Choice

A few big names - and some surprises - make the cut for the best Texas golf courses and resorts ranked from 2014-2024, according to our reviewers.
Apache Links at Squaw Valley
One of two wonderful 18-hole courses at Squaw Valley is the Apache Links Course.

We've created a Texas-sized golf list for America's second largest state: The 13 public golf courses that have dominated a decade of Golfers' Choice.

From 2014-2024, 76 different courses ranked among the top 25 in Texas. It was tough to whittle all those contenders down to a working list.

We analyzed how many times a club/resort had a course rank among the top 25 in our annual lists and then weighed that number against where each course finished in the rankings over time. A course that finished among the top 10 three or four times wasn't able to compare with a course that finished among the top 25 (with some high finishes) 7 or 8 times, showing a range of consistency that's important to golfers.

Here's the list of the best public golf courses in Texas over the past decade, according to our community of reviewers:

  1. Wilderness Golf Course

    Lake Jackson, Texas
    Public
    4.5124946717
    462

    Top 25 selections: (2021 #6), (2020 #1), (2019 #1), (2018 #5), (2017 #11), (2016 #2), (2015 #4), (2014 #4).
Comment: Designed by Jeff Brauer, The Wilderness at Lake Jackson boasts seven top-six finishes, including No. 1 twice.

  2. Moody Gardens

    Galveston, Texas
    Public/Resort
    4.551256732
    1031

    Top 25 selections: (2023 #22), (2022 #4), (2021 #13), (2020 #7), (2019 #6), (2018 #10), (2017 #8), (2016 #4), (2015 #10), (2014 #6).
Comment: Moody Gardens is the only Texas club to make all 10 rankings. The staff - from the starters to the superintendent - deserve a big pat on the back for that accomplishment.

  3. The Rawls Course at Texas Tech

    Lubbock, Texas
    Public
    4.5988470895
    323

    Top 25 selections: (2023 #9), (2019 #16), (2018 #2), (2017 #2), (2016 #7), (2015 #21), (2014 #1).
Comment: This is one of Tom Doak's most affordable golf courses. Why not time a round with a fun college football Saturday?

  4. La Cantera Hill Country Resort

    San Antonio, Texas
    Public/Resort
    4.6670574348
    634

    Top 25 selections: (2023 #14), (2021 #8), (2020 #8), (2019 #2), (2018 #23), (2017 #19), (2016 #12), (2015 #19), (2014 #9).
Comment: La Cantera's lone remaining course - the Palmer closed in 2020 - is an ideal Hill Country layout, rising and falling with the land adjacent to Six Flags Fiesta Texas amusement park.

  5. Squaw Valley Golf Club

    Top 25 rankings: Comanche Lakes at Squaw Valley (2020 #9), (2019 #5), (2018 #11), (2016 #17), (2015 #9). Apache Links at Squaw Valley (2021 #21), (2020 #4), (2019 #3), (2018 #4), (2017 #12), (2016 #3), (2015 #9).
Comment: Squaw Valley is the only multi-course operation to make our list. That's a surprise considering how well-known Omni Barton Creek is. The 72 holes at Barton Creek weren't nearly as consistent in ranking among the state's top 25 courses as Squaw Valley.

  6. The Links At Land's End

    Yantis, Texas
    Public
    4.6941349439
    407

    Top 25 selections: (2021 #3), (2020 #2), (2019 #10), (2018 #9), (2017 #9), (2014 #3).
Comment: The Links at Land's End has racked up some high finishes - three times in the top three - and has never dropped out of the top 10 in the six years it made the top 25.

  7. Delaware Springs Golf Course

    Burnet, Texas
    Public
    4.6407898064
    1326

    Top 25 selections: (2023 #12), (2022 #10), (2021 #25), (2019 #24), (2018 #16), (2017 #13), (2016 #24), (2015 #3), (2014 #7).
Comment: Dating to 1992, Delaware Springs had one super year (third in 2015) but otherwise produced steady results - ranking between 7th to 25th - for the eight other (out of 10) eligible seasons.

  8. Vaaler Creek Golf Club

    Blanco, Texas
    Public
    4.5383584352
    1240

    Top 25 selections: (2023 #15), (2021 #17), (2020 #12), (2019 #11), (2018 #12), (2017 #25), (2016 #6), (2015 #6), (2014 #8).
Comment: Vaaler Creek made the top 25 cut nine out of 10 seasons, but could never crack the top five. Sandwiched between San Antonio and Austin, it's a popular local option.

  9. Wolfdancer Golf Club

    Lost Pines, Texas
    Public
    3.8425441823
    645

    Top 25 selections: (2021 #23), (2020 #24), (2018 #21), (2017 #3), (2016 #14), (2015 #5), (2014 #18).
Comment: More known for his work in Florida and Michigan, Arthur Hills left his mark in Texas with Wolfdancer, another Hill Country gem.

  10. Quarry Golf Club

    San Antonio, Texas
    Public
    4.6193261903
    1113

    Top 25 selections: (2023 #13), (2022 #19),  (2021 #15), (2020 #21), (2018 #17), (2017 #20), (2016 #23), (2015 #12).
Comment: Ranked eight different times, The Quarry is one of the most unique courses in the country. Architect Keith Foster used the 100-foot high rock quarry walls to frame the routing. The Quarry is currently closed, undergoing a renovation until the end of September.

  11. Hill Country Golf Club

    San Antonio, Texas
    Public/Resort
    3.738498964
    983

    Top 25 selections: (2023 #25), (2020 #14), (2019 #23), (2018 #19), (2017 #17), (2016 #19), (2015 #22).
Comment: Hill Country's 27 holes have made the top 25 seven times, never cracking the top 12. It's another San Antonio favorite.

  12. Lighthouse Country Club

    Kingsland, Texas
    Semi-Private
    4.3858181531
    789

    Top 25 selections: (2022 #23), (2020 #20), (2019 #12), (2018 #24), (2016 #25), (2015 #15), (2014 #20).
Comment: There's no shame in Lighthouse making a home in the back half of the top 25 for seven different seasons. Most semi-public courses would gladly trade places.

  13. Heritage Ranch

    Fairview, Texas
    Public/Resort
    4.6118927617
    735

    Top 25 selections: (2023 #2), (2022 #25), (2021 #14), (2020 #25), (2019 #20), (2018 #25), (2016 #1).
Comment: Heritage Ranch started Golfers' Choice at no. 1 in 2014 and finished the decade at no. 2 in 2024. Unfortunately, a few low rankings and missed cuts along the way hurt this evaluation.
