David Moore admits he's a "data nerd".

So when the 58-year-old resident from Canton, Ga.. discovered Georgia's Golfers' Choice "best of" list in 2017, he started building a spreadsheet including all the courses. As an avid bogey golfer, he liked having a guide showing him where to play. Moore, who has a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Georgia State University, has used Golfers' Choice to help him plan golf trips to South Carolina and Arizona, where he has family.

"I enjoy playing a new course and the challenge the unknown brings," Moore said. "I also enjoy having a list of places to play and checking them off as I play them."

His spreadsheets have become more elaborate over time. He started color-coding courses that made the lists multiple years - a "best of the best," he calls it. He has played 9 of the top 11 rated courses in Georgia and 30 of all 76 Georgia courses that have appeared in the rankings. Now that Golfers' Choice is celebrating a decade of ranking courses, he's ready to go nationwide with his spreadsheets.

Moore's wish is our latest project. We've compiled every Golfers' Choice state ranking we've ever done in this article. We know there are other David Moores out there. Savvy golfers use our rankings to determine where to play all the time. Golfer 'klmgolf80' recently left a review of Aldeen Golf Club, telling us it was his favorite of the courses he played on an Illinois trip he set up using our ratings.

As I explained in a column earlier this year about Why Golfers' Choice rankings matter now more than ever, our Golfers' Choice rankings aren't like your traditional "best of" lists from golf magazines. They're not assembled by small, elite panels and editors. They reflect the tastes and experiences of everyday golfers like you and me, like David Moore and 'klmgolf80.' By and large, they are courses that everybody can afford to play, although pricey bucket-list courses like Pebble Beach Golf Links or the PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass do make an occasional appearance.

We get a lot of complaints on social media about why certain famous courses aren't ranked or that they're ranked too low. We shrug it off knowing there are lots of satisfied golfers who understand our lists and appreciate them.

The Golfers' Choice rankings have evolved since first being introduced in 2014. As the number of course reviews on GolfPass has skyrocketed - our first million came in 2020 and the second million in 2023 - we've gotten more sophisticated and more detailed in creating our all-important state-by-state ranking lists. Consider the following time line:

* In 2014, we launched the Golfers' Choice franchise by creating ranking lists for 11 states: California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington and Arizona.
* In 2015, we added 18 more - Colorado, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin - and created a New England ranking including the best of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts.
* In 2016, we added Mississippi and Nebraska.
* In 2017, we added Arkansas, Delaware, Iowa, Kansas and New Mexico.
* In 2018, we added Utah and West Virginia, plus aligned the Dakotas, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming into a single "Mountain West" region, and then separated the New England states - Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts - into their own individual lists.
* In 2020, as we transitioned from Golf Advisor to GolfPass, we rebranded everything to reflect the year the lists debuted, not the year we collected the course review data. (Hence, the 2019 lists don't exist). With this update, we went all-in for 2020, ranking courses in every state except Alaska. We've kept to this full-on group of lists each year since.

A decade after 2014, we are still going strong. Below are the links to every state-by-state ranking we've created since the beginning.

If you don't want to click on each link, we've highlighted the no. 1 course that year for some perspective. For some states that have 10 years of rankings, we will be selecting a "course/facility of the decade" in future stories. We've already named our choices nationally and in Florida. These are places you don't want to miss.
